If you are located in the area, I highly recommend purchasing the museum membership. It takes quite a few hours to just view the main museum and for the cost of the other 2 houses and the other associated museums, youll save a lot by getting the membership. Great displays and friendly staff!

I loveddd this museum!! It was my first time there! I’m new to the area but I was an anthropology graduate so this made me SO happy! Visited for my birthday and it was such a treat! Staff is very friendly and the exhibits are phenomenal. Amazing to learn about the rich history of Charleston ️

Great experience! The staff was super friendly and helpful. We were able to tour at our own pace and were told that our tickets were good for the entire day, in case we wanted to come back. The tickets were very affordable and our 12 year old son was able to get a childs ticket, which saved us quite a bit. Neat artifacts, lots of history. The kids loved it and were attentive the entire time. They did a scavenger hunt and thoroughly enjoyed it. I would definitely recommend this museum for young and old alike.

We went shortly after opening on a Monday and had the entire place to ourselves until we were headed out. Face masks not required and it would of been nice to have the kids area open and some of the examples/drawers in use but plenty to see and learn without it. I like that its set up in a timeline and easy to follow. Employees were constantly cleaning and the areas were very well maintained. We visited while on vacation and enjoyed ourselves. Its great that children under 6 are free as well

I have wanted to come back ever since to spend more time. This time we spent hours there and it was great! The staff was great and the museum is really well laid out. Of course we were a little disappointed that there were a few things we couldnt see or do because of covid, but that is nobodys fault.Would definitely recommend!

The Charleston Museum is a great experience that has been consistent and excellent throughout the years. I have been coming to The Charleston Museum ever since I could remember and it always seems to deliver a unique and educational experience every time no matter what year. I really like the exhibits about the history of Charleston and all of the different exhibits that rotate in and out. This museum is very well run and organized. I also really like the building and the feel it has with the architecture with the bricks and the courtyard. I also like the museum and its auditorium as an event venue as it is a good place to host different events and speeches. The Charleston Museum is awesome and I look forward to coming back here many times in the future.

I absolutely loved this museum. I had a day extra in Charleston and I decided to check out some local museums. I was so glad I picked this one. I purchased the 3 museum option for a cheaper bundled rate. It only took me only 90 minutes to briskly tour this entire museum. It was easy and not very busy during the daytime. I absolutely loved the Charleston historical exhibit which included so much about the war of independence, civil war and even it included a great exhibit on fashion throughout the south. Wow! I loved the extra exhibits on the old inventory the museum owns. It includes a giant Egyptian artifact. You’ll love this museum for an easy but fun day trip.

Much bigger than i thought it would be. The one side with the special exhibit is fairly small so i assumed it would be the same across the hall. Not sure what dimension i entered into but the building seemed to become 3 times larger with an exhibit that never seemed to end. Which is good, just might have budgeted my time better. Felt like i started to run through things at the end just to find if there really was an exit.

A unique museum in Charleston. It started out as a museum of world-wide curiosities, such as ancient Egypt or fossils, which is now its own little section. But the majority is a museum documenting Carolina, from Native Americans to settlers to slavery to the modern age, and it pulls no punches. I think the just interesting section was about how rice used to be the money maker for the region, but also the cost of growing that rice. I definitely recommend a visit

The oldest museum in America, actually it was a museum before America was a country, opened in 1773 and, though it has moved locations, still has an amazing collection of American and African American historical artifacts that are stunning amd very well presented. It houses Egyptian artifacts and items of earliest civilizations as well as local historical artifacts. It also houses mammal, reptile and insect specimens and from its ceiling hangs the largest whale caught off the coast of Charleston. The timeline of South Carolina history is really cool, and represents Charlestons rise as a seaport and place of rice production along with both imagery in the form of photography and paintings and artifacts of the time period from Colonial to Victorian to present style. One walking in off the street not knowing a thing about Charleston history would certainly get a great idea of the whole story from this museum. My ABSOLUTE favorite exhibition at the Charleston Museum is the silver display. So many fine examples of family silver in English style and Charleston style that certainly showed the wealth of Charleston families of the time period. Lovely place, worth the visit!

History contextualized to Charleston from dinosaurs through the Civil War. One star off for not really covering slavery adequately, albeit still better than other places around town (looking at you Middleton). Well its certainly not the highlight of your Charleston visit, the Charleston museum is a leisurely tour through Charleston history from prehistoric days to current. After days of touring here and touring there, running hither and thither, its a place to relax and walk through at your own pace with no large crowds and no tour guide telling you to move along. If youre a history buff, paleontologist, or just dabble a little in history, youll like this Museum

Great Museum. If youre a tourist in Charleston, this is a good place to start. See the story about the history of the city, the way that rice dominated the economy, how the sons of Caribbean plantation owners arrived with the practice of slavery that they were used to. And so much more. Of course, if you like looking at guns and artillery and swords and uniforms, theres plenty of that too.The photos is a cute display of antique chamber pots in the .. Many artifacts and information do an exceptional job immersing you in the day to day life of collonists of a different era. Good museum, but could do a much better job telling the slave experience and what really happened during that period. The exhibit made it seem like the slaves were willing participants in a successful business venture. Much more detail and homage should be paid to the very people who were stolen from their native land, tortured, forced into slavery, and built America with their bare hands.

Without a bit of structure, it would be easy to miss out on the best understanding. I only had a fleeting visit to Charleston so asked the front desk how to best use my limited time - a good decision. You could either wander around aimlessly or pick a few priorities and do it well. By mistake I turned left instead of right and wondered why i bothered - saw a few costumes of the times but that wasnt my main priority.Eventually I found the rooms with the human settlements which was my main interest (I was less interested in the fossils and prehistoric skeletons) and was absolutely fascinated by the exhibits. An excellent museum with so much more to learn than just by reading books.
