Not quite the subject matter we were expecting but interesting nonetheless. Some exhibits are a quick walk-through like the robotics exhibit on the first floor, and some are more involved to absorb all of the material, such as the shipbuilding exhibit. I didnt have the greatest appreciation for the Polaroid exhibit because it consisted of a lot of photos that seemed to express for an obscure shock factor that distracted from their scientific interest (I say this as a layman). Overall it was worth $10 but not much more. The art in motion exhibit was my favorite and I would have loved to see 10x more!!

This museum is a great place for kids and adults. It is a fascinating blend of a science museum and an art museum. The kinetic sculpture exhibit is incredible. Other major exhibits cover ship building and the history of Polaroid camera.Parking is not provided, so youll need to use a nearby garage or the street meters.

This is a must go to attraction for anyone devoted to the sciences.

Very enjoyed the museum! Despite the name, it’s not really though an MIT Museum (it has little of MIT’s history per se), but more like a museum of technology that came out of it. It’s a great spot to come alone (it’s not so large) or with friends and family, and there are some interactive activities that children can also participate (at specific hours).

If you love science, particularly physics, you will enjoy this museum. I found it kind of interesting. Most of it was dedicated to the science of movement and part of it to image and video. It is actually pretty small, and you can easily get through it in about an hour. There is an extensive part of the museum that feature boat construction. I expected something totally different going there (like cutting edge tech, robotics etc.), but I still enjoyed it.

Very interesting museum featuring a number of exhibits relevant to MIT. When I visited, the ground floor showed a number of robotic devices and the upper are had lots of interesting displays about ship architecture, including drawings, notebooks, models and a number of other things. Pretty specific, but very interesting. There were also a number of mechanical art pieces on display as well as a very interesting photo exhibit about the Bauhaus movement.

Really nice little museum space right in Cambridge that’s a bargain at $10 for admission. It doesn’t have a ton of gallery space but it’s impressively curated and really showcases MIT’s focus on the intersection between art and science. There were three main exhibits, Lighter, Stronger, Faster: The Herreshoff Legacy which looks at the legacy of New England Ship Building. Gestural Engineering: The Sculpture of Arthur Ganson, which involved wonky, crank or pedal powered “Ganson” machine that spring into motion. Finally, the marquee exhibit was The Polaroid Project: At the Intersection of Art and Technology. The real blockbuster exhibit was The Polaroid Project. This was an absolute feast for the eyes. The curators did an excellent job in walking you through the history of the Polaroid and then showing you how use and techniques developed with works by over 175 artists. Beautiful space, I could have spent half a day in here.Ganson’s sculptures were awesome. Quirky, fun, at times sad and melancholy - you could stay in here for hours. (Pretty kid friendly too). The ship building exhibit was interesting, while definitely not my cup of tea, I learned a lot about the craft and the blistering pace of design to win the President’s Cup.

I was disappointed. It was smaller and leas extensive than I had expected. The displays that were there were of a high quality but I didnt really get an overall view of MIT and how it has spanned the years. The rickety old store-front building that houses the MIT Museum is hiding in plain sight, tucked away on Mass Ave between the main campus and Central Square. Really, you have to look for it. Once you make it through a disorganized lobby/giftshop, inside is a stunning, well-curated collection of achievements in robotics, neurology, photography, engineering and other fields that can exist nowhere else. After all, this is THE MIT. Most of the exhibits are on the second floor and a couple of hours is all you need to take in the collection and catch an occasional presentation. It is fairly childproof and child-accessible. The discounts for admission are numerous so check and admission is free the last Sunday of every month September to June.

The MIT Museum, founded in 1971, is located at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, Massachusetts. It hosts collections of holography, technology-related artworks, artificial intelligence, robotics, maritime history, and the history of MIT. Its holography collection of 1800 pieces is the largest in the world, though not all of it is exhibited. As of 2019, holographic art, and works by the kinetic artist Arthur Ganson are the two largest long-running displays. There is a regular program of temporary special exhibitions, often on the intersections of art and technology. In addition to serving the MIT community, the museum offers numerous outreach programs to school-age children and adults in the public at large. The widely attended annual Cambridge Science Festival was originated by and continues to be coordinated by the museum. A major expansion program is underway, with expected relocation to a new building in the Kendall Square innovation district in late 2021. The museum was founded in 1971 by Warren Seamans, originally as part of an exhibit project of the Office of the President and the Department of Humanities for the inauguration of President Jerome Wiesner. The committee involved was named the Historical Collections in December 1971 and served as the predecessor to the museum. Its purpose was to collect and preserve historical artifacts and documents scattered throughout MIT. It was renamed the MIT Museum in 1980, and began developing exhibits and educational programs for the MIT community as well as society at large. Since 2005 the official mission of the MIT Museum has been, to engage the wider community with MIT’s science, technology and other areas of scholarship in ways that will best serve the nation and the world in the 21st century. The museum is directed by MIT Professor John Durant, and operates under MITs Associate Provost for the Arts, who also oversees the List Visual Arts Center and the MIT Office of the Arts. Durant is also a faculty member of the MIT School of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences (SHASS) in its Program in Science, Technology, and Society (STS). He teaches courses on the development of science exhibits and communication between scientists, engineers, and the general public. The museum was accredited by the organization now called the American Alliance of Museums (AAM) in 1984, and reaccredited in 2002 and 2013. The MIT Museum also belongs to the Association of Science-Technology Centers (ASTC), Museum Computer Network, New England Museum Association, International Confederation of Architectural Museums, and the International Council of Maritime Museums.

Admission is free one Sunday of the month, so look out for that as well.My favorite thing here is the kinetic sculptures, which may be the only permanent exhibit they have. I could watch these things for hours, theyre so creative and clever.Im saying four stars only because the museum is quite small and unless youre very interested in one of the temporary exhibits, it might feel like ten bucks is asking too much. Still, its supporting MIT and the research and education that has made so much of modern life possible, so its hard to feel bad about that.Id say you could properly see the whole museum in about an hour to 90 minutes depending on how fast you read and whats on display.
