Rooms are beautiful. Knowledgeable tour guide. A quilt and painting are sublime! Many dresses mounted on mannequins. Stumbled on this place and I thought I had researched the area for things to see and do. No admission when I was there, accept donations.

Privately owned, not state Historic site so many of the items, while interesting, are items like the ones that would have been used. We were met by a tour guide upon walking in the front door and couldnt look around on our own at all. We prefer to explore a little on our own. This just wasnt for us.

This 19th century house museum conveys the life of a privileged family with displays of exquisite furniture, silver, china, dolls, textiles, photos and paintings. It is an astonishing collection in its volume and range - something there for any interest. There, I first learned of the furniture made by the free black, Thomas Day - an amazing talent. Temporary exhibits on upper floor are very interesting and tour includes summer kitchen, family cemetery, and gardens. Did not have time to visit adjacent Civil War battlegrounds but they are easily accessible.
