Hard to get to monument itself. Definitely bring shoes
This monument is pretty wild. 60 tall and the walls are 4 thick at the base (the tower is hollow). A day marker built by the government in 1825 for navigating the entrance to the Saco River. Remarkable that it still stands after 194 years of New England coastal storms.
This is a fascinating story and place. Many locals have no idea what this “monument “ is; what it’s time-frame is. When I’ve asked, I’ve been told: something to do with the 2nd WW; or, the 1st WW. In fact it dates to just 13 years after the War of 1812. It’s a great and fun story. Google it for all the details. Enjoy!Dr Brian Smith
