Great experience. I was greeted as soon as I entered the building. I also received directions and brief information about the museum. Parking may be difficult to find but it is not expensive at all.

Basically a indoctrinated Progressive socialist group designed this Museum in which it never used to be this way since Ive been a lifelong residence of Whatcom County and prime example of how Bellingham is basically a mini Seattle and a mini California the whole West Coast turning left

Everything about our visit was perfect. The staff was AMAZING with all the kids and the people with kids that come regularly were very nice! I dont have a single, even remotely negative comment to make! Worth every cent of the $10!

Great museum, me my uncle and aunt went here while they were visiting. There was so many cool things that I learned and saw about the place Ive lived for years. I just dont agree with the art gallery that takes up a good majority of the second building. Most of it was just objects that looked like they were put together by a kindergartner or by a psychopath. There was also a lot of propaganda and somewhat offensive material, and I dont get offended easily. Anyway the actual museum part was great and informative. Just disregard the second building, its honestly just an expensive waste of space.

A bit of an outdated and slightly worn down mueseum, but its luster holds true for the event hall that they have upstairs. Its appreciable that the full mueseum is open for viewing by guests attending a (private or otherwise) event there after closing.

Old City Hall & Lightcatcher Museums:Very disappointing. I love museums that are jam packed with history (so it takes hours to see it all) and multi-cultural. The grand staircase to the 2nd floor was THE highlight of this museum. And someone was/is a huge bird fan, because stuffed birds are the largest exhibit. I was through with 3 floors in maybe 15 minutes (Im probably being generous). The up side is it cost $10 for 2 museums. So, I walked to the next museum, The Lightcatcher. It was better, but still disappointing. Again, I was through 2 floors and out in a very short time.Im glad I checked it out on my own and didnt waste taking my family when they visit from out of town.

A beautiful & well preserved historic building in the cozy cute town of Bellingham. The Whatcom Museum (Old City Hall) is a local gem and worth an afternoon of exploring. Free parking is limited but theres ample street parking. Wonderful chamber music concert venue for the Bellingham Chamber Music Society!

Only two drawbacks. Its one museum in two buildings, and the price seemed a bit high for what I expected....but that might be just my expectations.

The two buildings of this museum can keep you busy all afternoon. See work by national-calibur artists in the Lightcatcher building downstairs and understand local Coast Salish culture upstairs. Then learn more local history details in the grand Victorian-era Old City Hall Building a block away.

Loved this museum! It just so happened to be Africa themed when we went. Having spent time in Tanzania myself, I was thrilled to find a UW professor giving a lecture discussing the Maasai and Tanzanian politics. The museum had quite a large display of elephant ivory and I am unsure how I feel about that. Regardless, the museum is splendid and a very pleasant stop.

On its own, Bellinghams original and historic museum might seem like a let-down. The orientation room and video are nice, as are the emphasis on Coast Salish First Nations history and more stuffed birds than youve likely ever seen before. But because the admission cost covers the newer and more modern Lightcatcher just two blocks away, the Whatcom Museum really is worth the visit. The building itself is impressive also. And dont forget to walk around to the back to take in the lovely view, garden and kinetic art behind the museum.

We certainly dont visit this local icon often enough, but when we do I am always pleasantly surprised by the friendly, informative & quirky docents. They make the experience just a bit more memorable. This last visit we were treated to excellent views out of the upper turret overlooking Bham bay while bright god beams skittered over the water under a brooding sky, sorry I didnt get photos ;{)

Enjoyed the bird exhibit and tour at Old City Hall. There were some excellent old photos and a nice history video too. The art in the LIghtcatcher was childish and the room was dark and cold. Couldnt get out fast enough. The childrens play area, however, looked to be a paradise for young kids.

With new exhibits every couple of months theres always something new to see here. The sections on historic Whatcom County (photographs, paintings, etc.) are particularly great for those interested in local history. When the Syre Education center is open it hosts an excellent collection of Pacific Northwest native people, plants, and animal artifacts. Pro-tip: your public library membership gets you free entrance to the museum once every 2 months for up to 6 people.

Exploring this building -- Bellinghams Old City Hall -- is reason enough to visit this magnificent 19th Century landmark overlooking Bellingham Bay which now houses the museum. In addition to their regular collection which is worthy of exploring, the museum regularly rotates the collection and attracts a variety of excellent speakers, lecturers, historians and artist.Today, Sonoma-based painter and curator of “The Intimate Diebenkorn” (currently on exhibit at the Lightcatcher through August 19th) Chester Arnold, noted that mid-century painter, Richard Diebenkorn’s artworks “are the works of a modern master.”Arnold shared insight and depth into the life and work of Diebenkorn at a lecture in the Museum’s Rotunda Room this afternoon (Saturday, June 23). Diebenkorn’s personal experiences, especially the Bay Area landscape surrounding him, clearly shaped his style, perspective, and career. Next stop: the nearby Lightcatcher Museum (250 Flora Street -- two blocks away).
