Extremely interesting place to visit, the tour was well worth the 15$ and felt very honest and just a time of sharing stories and other notable things about Aldo Leopold and things related to this property. For anyone who has read the sand county almanac or is interested in conservation this place is a must visit.

In November 2019 my wife and I visited the Shack after hearing an excellent lecture on Leopolds life and work. Later, we spent the time just before and around twilight watching the migrating sandhill cranes fly into their evening resting places around the Wisconsin River. It was an unforgettable day.

One of the most amazing places to visit in Wisconsin. I learned so much about nature and Aldo Leopold and his legacy. The staff was so friendly and knowledgeable. Every direction you look. There is something beautiful to see.

Dreamed of visiting for a lifetime. The center is nice, beautiful and staffed with good people. Small museum and interestingly, “off-site” which makes good sense. The Shack is left in as-was condition as much as possible and just a short jaunt down the road. You are free to wander around the property and dream. The hum of tires on the nearby interstate adds an interesting touch. The area by the river reminded me strongly of the bosque in New Mexico and brought me full circle. As we drove away and I was still walking the shack in my mind, I almost hit a couple cranes standing in the road. I almost laughed at the absurdity then I almost cried.

Classic book, amazing man, lasting legacy here preserved for our edification and enjoyment. We ignore the lessons he learned at our peril.

This is a great place to visit if you have an appreciation for nature, conservation, and native prairie restoration. You can walk the trails of the property of Aldo Leopold and visit his old shack where his family would stay. On occasion, Aldos distant relatives are standing by the shack to give insight on the history of the place. The restored prairie area is beautiful and a joy to see if you have an interest in botany. Trails wind through the property and parallel the Wisconsin river. Overall very peaceful and lovely place to visit - a great combination of nature and history.

Ah...where even to begin?Read Sand County Almanac before you come. Or dont. Excellent staff and tour guides work here to help educate us to Leopolds land stewardship theories and techniques. Beautiful, especially, for me, in the autumn-only time I have visited, though.Just a place. A Shack, on a river. But the Ideas, the Writing, the Experiences had here are much more tactile, to my mind, than, for instance, trying to distill the Mississippi out of Clemens birthplace in Hannibal, with every hotel named the same.Aldo Leopold was a pioneer of conservationism. Come here if you care.

The buildings boast a rustic yet beautiful architectural style, and there are several forested walking trails that are absolutely lovely during all four seasons. The trails span an impressive stretch of the surrounding land, and their annual Art Discovery Day program is always a treat to participate in. We love visiting here!

If you are interested in conservation, and especially, in the history of conservation, this place is a must. The main building uses some of the most advanced green planning and structure in the US. The main attraction, however, is The Shack, the chicken coop that Aldo Leopold and his family turned out to be their weekends, holidays, and vacations headquarters, and where he took many of his restoration and conservation ideas. Its a very simple place but thats why it has so a huge meaning given the importance of Aldo Leopold to the development of The Land Ethics and so many influential essays.

The displays at the Foundation visitor center were especially interesting for their discussion of how Aldo Leopolds views of conservation changed over time. The roles that his family — especially his wife — played in the rehabilitation of this exhausted piece of land and later in the childrens own research added a lot to the story. Still, the best part was the visit to the Shack and walking on the land itself — right on the shores of the Wisconsin River. The Foundation is closed on weekends, and road signs are few, so use GPS to get there. Parking at the Shack is $7, but everything else is free.
