My 11 year old and I really enjoyed our visit to Ernst Quarries. We spent roughly four hours digging and sorting, coming away with a tidy haul of teeth and bones. We brought a pop-up canopy for shade, which I cannot recommend enough - if we had been in the direct sun the whole time I doubt we wouldve lasted half as long. I would also add that there is actual work involved in digging up and sorting through the earth, so at least one member of your group should be prepared to apply some elbow grease. For us, that was part of the fun and adds to the feeling of accomplishment. We plan on returning again someday. Thanks Rob!

We had a good time,at first it was hard to find the shark teeth. But once our guide gave us some more pointers. We found several.

Baby teeth were all we found. We were under the impression it was super easy to find the large ones. They even tempted my son, out in the staging area, showing him a giant meg tooth. My son was disappointed when he asked where the most recent meg tooth was found, the guy just said everywhere. The only ones that are everywhere are the tiny teeth and embrionic teeth. Make sure youre kids understand that finding a big one is super rare! Be careful when you go, and be prepared for rattlesnake encounters, tons of scary giant spiders (we found one in ever spot we dug in) and scorpions (one fell out of the dirt from my shovel while standing in a hole digging) in the dirt youre digging in. Also lots of giant black ants, grasshoppers galore and bees (even though we didnt encounter the bees). Youll definitely find lots of broken bone fossils. Also, bring exact change. I only brought 20s and was owed 10 but never got repaid. For the price we paid, 80 bucks, I could have taken him to a shop and got him a big tooth. But, at least we tried, got to spend time together excavating, and found teeth even though they were tiny. If your kids want to find LOTS of fossils easily, Udig trilobites quarry in Delta UT is the place to go.

The guides were very helpful. My daughter was sad that she didnt find a shark tooth but she did find some other cool fossils.

How many places in southern California can you dig fossils and basically guarantee youll find them?

Its hard work but worthwhile because you do find fossils, not just shark teeth here. I found one perfect tooth of medium size. Owner/host very informative & fun time. Was able to navigate the dirt road in a VW gti, so not too bad.

I was excited about my trip to Ernst Quarries, with the idea of digging for sharks teeth, bone, and other fossils. Were were given direction and orientation on the dos and donts. Only cash was accepted with NO receipt, and we all signed a full page liability waver, with no copies provided. I shared a cavelike ledge with a man, Scott, and his 10-12 year old son. Without warning the ledge collapsed pinning me in from above the knee down. Scott and another man came to dig me out, as I couldnt move a muscle. There was hundreds of pounds of weight on me, and I was completely pinned in. I worked hard not to panic, and eventually I was freed. I was glad that the boy was not nearby at the time. Its been a week since this happened. I cancelled the rest of my 3 week RV road trip, and went home, as I couldnt do much other than ice, heat and elevation. I was traveling alone. I sought medical attention, have massive bruising on my lower legs, and still in a lot of pain, though fortunately nothing is broken. After we were allowed freedom to dig, we were told that we could leave anytime, but had the day to stay.As an amateur layperson I have no real experience to know when a ledge was becoming unsafe or unstable. I wanted the owner or employee to either monitor, or supervise the site, and if need be, close off areas that were questionable. No one came around to our area to observe our spot, or asked us to move. I just dont feel that signing a waiver, taking money, and providing an experience, should negate all and any responsibility to assure that conditions are as safe as they could be. There were several children on this tour, and if it were me, I would think twice about exposing them, in particular, to these cavelike ledges. I felt the need to share my story so others can be prepared.

Very cool place, our guide was super friendly and knowledgeable. We found a good number of shark teeth and other bones. Bring lots of water, and some lunch, and something to keep all your finds in, like a bag or box.

Been here twice. Had a great fun day both times. I always pay to go in the premium area, but I am sure looking through the tailings would be rewarding because people often miss a lot of teeth, myself included. It is exciting and almost addictive to dig for shark teeth. I have found some great specimens here, perfectly preserved. The owner, Rob, is a nice guy and gives you a tour of the place and explains before you are set loose on your own. There are plenty of teeth for everyone to find. However, I often see people digging too high. Remember, find the bottom of the layer first, and then look for teeth in the 15 inches above that bottom.

Cool place to go shark tooth hunting. Dig a hole and sift out the dirt and you will definitely find teeth. If its over 90 degrees, however, so I would seriously reconsider going as there is no shade.I had a good time. But my 3 year old gave up in like 30 minutes and my 9 year old gave up in like an hour. My 5 year old lasted 7 hours and had a blast. It was his highlight for our trip to California.

Absolutely wonderful experience! The host is very informative, very friendly! My son and I will come back but next time Im bringing my husband. We found shark teeth and lots of whale bones. The price is right. Also when finding the place on Google maps, please put in Ernst Quarries and NOT sharktooth hill. You will be placed on the southside of the park instead of the north, where the quarries are at.

My family planned to visit Ernst Quarries and contacted the owner two weeks ahead with some questions regarding the trip. We got the e-mail asking us to bump up our reservation to VIP grade but other than that, no other feedback or answers to our questions. We tried calling the office but it only takes us to the voicemail, which asked us to use e-mail for questions unless its an emergency.
