This is a charming old theater with plenty of parking in the lot and nearby. A word to the wise though - the parking meters on adjacent streets only accept change! My family and I brought my nephews here to see Puff the Magic Dragon, and we all had a great time. The play was about an hour long - which was a perfect length for the children. It kept their attention the whole time, and at the end the actors were available for photos and autographs. It was very well organized and a fun family experience.

My school went here to see a play....The theater was small but elegant even though it lacked adequate seating. The adults sat in the theater seats ..kids on the floor and some above in the balcony...Parking was a bit rough because you have to walk a couple of blocks to find a spot...then feed the meter. All in all it worked out fine...and the kids loved the show...so did I!

Great local theater which I heard is the oldest in Austin. I went as a chaperone with my childs school and they were able to accommodate over 200 kids. The production I watched was well put together and enjoyable. Would highly recommend.

Small theatre. I liked the soft acoustics. It made the lyrics easy to understand. The conductor remarked that the singers didnt like the lack of feedback.

This historic venue has hand-painted scenic stage drops and is the oldest opera house in Texas. Its gorgeous & I love to imagine it with the windows swept open on hot summer nights. Now its air conditioned, thank goodness! Its cozy in the pretty basement and breath-taking up stairs in the main theater. The productions for children are worth seeing, and we often attend cultural events in the evenings. Our favorite is The Living Room: Storytelling for grownups on the first Saturday of the month.

Super sweet little theatre. Every seat is fabulous. If you are taking kids, they have coloring pages and snacks before the doors open and a large carpet area right in front for the kids to sit and wiggle. Wonderful, caring staff and parking free right outside the entrance.

Not a fan of this theater. Parking is a problem. The place consistently has HVAC problems especially during the heat of summer. (I have been here many many times in the last 5 years. I have/had 3 kids in Avery Ranch Dance.) Seats are more or less flat on the floor. If you arent in one of the first few rows you will spend all your time angling to get a glimpse of the stage. Am pulling my kids from Avery Ranch Dance because they insist on having their performances here.

This is one of the finest places in Austin to see theater for youth. So many of the productions are adaptations of literary favorites that you wont see anywhere else because they are exclusive to the Scottish Rite Theater. But childrens theater is only one part of the story. Theres an annual Shakespeare production, a winter holiday show, and other theater and concerts throughout the year. Check it out!

Former Masonic Lodge, complete with leather chairs and paintings of the big shots on there walls. Theater appears built for purpose and is intimate but sort of has the feel of a school cafe. Still, good venue to be close to the action.

This is the perfect theater to take kids. They can sit on a rug, up close. Shows are entertaining, not too long. They always have a coloring program they can have, and the actors are available for autographs, afterwards. Its priced very reasonable. The summer camps are also fantastic!

My little guys (2 & 4) we went to the performance with Mother Falcon at Scottish Rite this afternoon and it was fabulous. Although Austin has such great live music, its not always accessible to kids and whats offered for kids (both live and otherwise) is often lackluster. The level of musicianship was impressive and the setting was perfect for kids -- room to move and dance, seats for the parents, big enough but not so large youd loose your little ones. The new artistic director seems to be working on great things at Scottish Rite and were so excited to see what she has planned.

Rather interesting setting to see The Whitest Kids U Know, never expected to see one of the best sketch groups of our time in a Freemasons Theater. The place kind of felt haunted, with old portraits on the wall of people in fez caps, swords in display cases, old furniture, and the theater it self was on old hard wood floor and rickety seats. The show was great, but still felt like sitting in the haunted mansion while we waited for the show to start.

I loved this place. I recently saw WinoVino play here along with the Austin Steamers and I really enjoyed the acoustics, ambiance, and the decor. This place is such a hidden gem!
