Had a lot of fun. Small venue but you get good live music and a place to dance

They charge a cover for nights with bands but its a nice intimate setting with a dance floor and good beer selection.

I had not been dancing in over 20 years. I needed to kill some time before heading to a family party for New Years Eve. I decided to stop in and just have a beer. I was nervous and apprehensive being alone, a woman, not to mention in my 50’s. I was very happy to discover there was a great mix of age. Young and old having a great time. A great range of race as well. Very Austin. I got asked to dance a couple of times. The men were complete gentlemen. They danced with me and then went on their way. They didn’t try to buy me a drink or invade my space. Just fun dancing. What a fantastic experience. I stayed so long I barely made it to my family party before midnight. Cash only at the door. ATM on-site was a Godsend. Great outdoor patio as well.

Great country bar spot! Could use one like this in Orlando. Food was delicious. Get the Queso con Campeche! My friends never had it before & they damn near ate all my chips with how good it was! XD

Great atmosphere, inside and out. Kind of feels like a magic show if you are unfamiliar with country and western. Which is good. Never eaten here, but the drinks and service are above average

The White Horse is a place for all. A nice mix of old and new Austin under the same roof. You dance or kick back and watch. The two step lesson on the weekends is the best in the city. This is an East Side staple you gotta hit up if you’re on E 6th Street. And the taco truck (Bomb Taco) is awesome! This horse can trot, gallop, And two step.

We had a blast two stepping here! The band The Golden Roses was awesome! And the food from the food truck was really yummy!

Superb, non-pretentious dive bar with excellent local entertainment. A place where people who can dance really well...dance really well. Leave your attitude at the door and enjoy this quintessential Texan experience.

First off, the staff has always been amazing every time I have been there--fast, friendly, and helpful. The food is fantastic bar food--definitely not for those on low cal, low sodium, low grease diets. That is exactly why I go there! The Reuben sandwich is awesome! The Reuben burger is off the hook! I love the house fries, but there are other choices. Cold beer and plenty of options (mostly big brewery options, so no craft or specialty beers). This place rocks for watching sports too.

Great place for dancing beginners and experts. It’s a really old building. Great service and ambiance. Live music is amazing. This is a popular local music and dancing venue. Enjoy!

Always a good time. Bartenders are good, lots of space inside and outside and the music was tight; the Rugged Gents played.

The realest honky tonk bar. It is one of the highlights of my Austin adventures. Go there. Be cool and enjoy. God wills it.

I went there with my bestfriend already pretty drunk and we had the best time just dancing and goofing during one of their live shows. Definitely will remember the great vibes this place has.Also I noticed a lot of kind people there just giving out compliments (could be the alcohol imagining stuff but hey)

This place is probably great if youre a country dancer.My wife and I had a terrific time when we went during dance lessons. If youre like me and worried about making a fool of yourself, then once the early evening dance lesson is over, youll want to find another bar.Theres whiskey on tap! Otherwise, as far as bar service, its pretty standard.

My go-to bar for country music fun... Always a fantastic band and the staff doesnt take any from anyone so you are safe here... Just dont get kicked out ;)

Wonderful experience for locals and tourists. We regularly go to the White Horse on Thursday nights for dance lessons with our out of town visitors. BETH is a terrific dance teacher. She is one of the main reasons we keep returning. The bands that follow the dance lessons are always excellent.

Used to love this place as a cheap dive bar. Came back after a few years gone and its become a trendy spot with drink prices to match.

This is a great place to check out the Austin music scene. Especially if you like two step, get your dancing shoes on and maybe cold beverage. The scene is both hip and quirky. So give it a go and enjoy yourself. And bring cash so if theres a cover you dont have to get money from the ATM.

This is not a good place for dancing. Way too small even for just hanging out. It’s hard to believe this gets such good ratings. Not worth the parking hassle, cover charge, long wait for drinks, no room for dancing place. Big bald bartender was rude & wouldn’t look me in the eye. I guess he believes size doesn’t matter cause I would whoop his a$$!!!!

This is one of the coolest places to hang out in Austin. The live music is phenomenal. Drinks are cheap, plentiful, and good. The dancing is always a lot of fun and good natured. Just all around a pleasure. Cant wait to go back one day.

Went here for the first time for the free two step lesson. It was cool to see so many people there at 7pm to try it out! Friendly, fun atmosphere. My boyfriend and I love to dance, so we enjoyed it here. The live band was great, and theres a cute little outdoor space with a pool table. I didnt get any drinks, so I cant comment on that. But I saw some really cheap happy hour specials posted (like $2 wells).

The dance instructors are really good and clear with steps. Plenty of practice time on the floor. The lesson was free except for tipping which the instructors deserved. Highly recommend lessons at The White Horse!!

Not really my scene, I was disappointed by the restrooms, but the service was good. Not enough places to sit or room to dance, but people were still dancing which is nice to see. The featured taco truck was dang good. Plus they had a pool table which was neat, and a free-use out of tune piano.

Heck yeah. Great atmosphere for a night out in Austin. Great acts. Nice selection of beers in bottles and cans. Well worth the five dollar cover. Outside seating if you want.

TERRIBLE BartenderI have read through the reviews and there are a few that reference this tall, large framed bartender with tattoos. I had thought we caught him on a bad night but I think this could be normal behavior.He is straight faced and DOES NOT communicate what so ever.First Round I ordered: It felt like he was irritated & annoyed when I asked the liquor selection for happy hour. When you order drinks he doesnt say okay Yes No he merely just turns away.My husband ordered the second round. The bartender replied that it was not happy hour. My husband said the clock says 1 minute. The bartender replied and said you have 10 seconds. My husband gave him the drink order and he went and came back with the drinks.The BILL then came out and did not appear to be right. My husband asked if he could talk to the bartender about it. The bartender said you were not in happy hour. My husband said that you told us we had 10 seconds, and the bartender escalated from there.The credit card was overcharged by $10.00..........Go to GARAGE or CRAFT PRIDE ---much better

This is the best of Austins love music joints... Great booking of up and coming bands, established acts, consistently high end music thats danceable, rarely a cover charge, going strong seven days a week, new acts take the stage right thru midnight and play till 2AM... Its a honky tonk, in the old tradition with old geezers, and young geezers who know how to two-step waiting to dance up the gals and then change partners... Just a pure fun spot thats not too loud and Texas friendly

I love this bar!!!! I’ve been looking for a great place in Austin to go dancing and I found it! The bands are always amazing, and the crowd is even friendlier! A great place not too far from downtown to find a classic country dive bar! You can even catch dance lessons a few times a week

We had the best time ever here!. The locals were friendly and taught us Aussies to two-step, the drinks were liberal and the $5 cover charge well worthwhile. Cant wait to come back!!

I’ll admit...I’m a tourist coming from Baltimore, but we had a great time learning to two step dance here with $2 PBRs in hand. Bartenders and dance hosts were so friendly and welcoming. At some point in the night it was nice to step back and appreciate the regulars who actually knew how to dance lmao

Fun place to dance! Live music was great and cover was only $5. Drinks werent too expensive, but Id stick to beer or wine here. Outdoor seating area was nice and theres a food truck available.

If you are in Austin and want a “Texas” experience stop by this bar! I love their red stage. They have country dancing at this spot. They have a pool table, an outdoor patio, a food truck and free pop corn! There is also a piano open to the public.

Awesome place with mad character! Great to find real country music and great live performances. It would be hard to come here and *not* dance! Would’ve given five stars but for the bathroom.

Love The White Horse because this is where Austins Couch Surfers meet every Th night. Music is good, alcohol prices are better & the taco truck in the back is legit.

A true gem. Ive gone here 2 different nights and the love band were good. Plenty of people to teach you to 2 step with minimal meat market vibes.

I think the term dive bar is a bit unfair for this place. Great live music (country) the night I went, there were people of all ages and capabilities dancing the night away. A cool bar with plenty on offer. A $5usd cover on the door for the band. Dont be shy, or be afraid to dance if your asked, a real friendly crowd frequents this place. Oh, and yes.... Some people still ride their horses to the bar!

Music and dancing were great! Sad there was no line dancing and the bartenders seemed annoyed.

5 stars but Im taking a star off because they refused me service on my last night there!!! (I maybe deserved it). Been here on 5 different trips to Austin and each time has ended in some form of wild adventure. Great place to meet locals and tourists and do a little two-stepping.

OMG! Was so great to be dancing again! The cover price is doubled to $10. If you get in before 8:00 they wont charge you. But if you stay after 8:00 theyll come around to your table and charge you. The beers, whether its a light beer or a Corona or $6 each. There is no happy hour. The live music started around 9:00. There was no earlier band. The staff was friendly. You need to wear a mask while youre dancing and if youre not sitting at your table. If you dont have a place to sit they said they wont let you in. But this could change. This was only the second night there were open in October 2020.It was all worth being able to dance to a live band again. I just loved it.BTW, they took their popcorn machine out

This place is situated in a great location. It also seems to have a lot of fun games. I was disappointed in the long wait time at the bar for no reason. My friend and I stood there for 10 minutes while bartenders casually walked back and forth ignoring us. Oh well, no big loss. There are plenty of other bars in Austin to check out. I am just glad I didnt pay the cover charge.

This place is great! It was my first time two-step dancing since I was just visiting Austin for the first time but I had a blast! Great place, awesome music, fantastic crowd! All time favorite!

My niece dragged me here, not realizing you cant teach an old dog new tricks, or teach it to dance. But the band was great, the atmosphere nice, and there were indeed some outstanding dancers (just not me).

Two step all night - a fun country music dance bar.

Just ask anyone in Austin and theyll probably know about this grungy, inviting spot for music and dancing. It looks like its been there 50 years, but its happening right now. Dance classes if you get there early enough on most nights, and almost every night they have great music there. Stand inside and dance or enjoy the band. Step outside for a visit to the perennial taco truck, or just to get some fresh air and talk with friends.

Super fun dive bar. My friend brought me here to learn how to 2 step. They offer lessons for a voluntary donation.If you stick around, locals will just come up and ask you to dance. So fun and will definitely come back on my next visit.

Got here early, so I didnt get to see any entertainment, but they did have someone teaching 2 step. The drinks were cheap and alot of room to move around. Free popcorn too.

Awesome western bar with live music!

Bar with a reasonably sized dance floor. Free dance lessons are excellent. But a little crowded for my like. I wind up dancing with my date outside where I can hear the music but was far less packed than the dance floor.

Live music was fantastic. Lively dance floor was entertaining to people watch. If there were seating options, more space would be available for dancers. Drinks were cold. Overall, place is a little run down and dated but entertainment makes up for it.

One of my live music FAVs for sure. 3 live bands every single night. If you dont recognize anyone on the calendar.... It doesnt matter! Theyll be awesome, guaranteed!

Really spacious. The menu is typical but the food more than makes up for it. Staff is friendly and helpful and will happily address any concerns. Highly recommended especially their meaty options. Id gladly put their meat in my mouth any day of the week.

Amazing place but unfortunately they have a bartender who doesnt like strangers or somebody with an accent I think (I am Italian). I saw him arguing and mistreating dark skin customers and refused to serve me without reason, I was not drunk and ask him politely. I dont know his name but he is tall. He has tattoos on his arms. He has some beard and he is always wearing a cap. I just left the place without arguing. Its a pity because I live in Austin and I went several times there with my Austins friends and had a great time! I even learned to dance 3 steps and enjoyed the live music. Unfortunately after what happened tonight I am not going back there anymore. I hope this review can give heads up to the establishments management.

Great vibe, looks like a movie set from a 1970s movie like Smokie and the Bandit. Cool old beer signs from the 70s. Unlike a 70s bar they have a great beer selection. Have a couple of pool tables inside and outside. Bartenders are great. Prices are better than what you might think for the neighborhood. Feels like a slice of old time Austin.
