I had no idea what to expect, but this turned out to be one of my favorite parts of a one week vacation in Austin. I highly recommend reserving a spot for the sunset show to anyone who is visiting Austin. Best of all, it’s free!

I thought the display would be changed based on the sky color but there were lights inside the walls displaying different colors. The experience was cool even though the space is very small.

It’s all the way at the top of the building on the roof. What makes this piece special compared to some similar ones is the colored lights event in the evenings.Be sure to book a viewing for the light show in the evening in advance because it can fill up. Reservations open one day in advance. Other times of day though the space is open to general public and has a wide range of hours.

It was absolutely beautiful and I wasnt expecting much at all. It was a nice quiet place, and it was almost futuristic. I could gather my thoughts and be at peace, and at the same time still be amazed by the buildings features, no matter how simplistic they were. 10/5

Very cool experience. Watching the sky change colors and the illusion your eyes play was unlike anything else.

See the light, free your mind, free of charge. James Turrells art experience on the roof deck of the Student Activities center at the University of Texas is a hidden gem on the list of fantastic & free things to do in Austin. Reserve tickets online for the sunset show, which features a light show coordinated with the changing sky as it shifts from day to night.

It was cool. The directions on the website were good and you can just GPS it and it is actually accurate. I gave 4 stars because I thought the sun was going to be changing the colors inside...but the lights are changing colors. It also was very hot when we went and I was tired of sweating!!! I would go again when it cools off i think.

Great place to get lost in the senses, sit back, unwind, and relax. Not something to pass up on! No words to describe it, only way to understand is through experience.

Just wow, what a cool experience. A great and beautiful meditative space. One of the best free art experiences in Austin. The exhibit is by Jack Turell. Reserve a spot for the susnet show on their website and you will be blown away!

Unless you dont mind the heat, go during cooler months. It may not usually be so bad, but I went on a day where the temperature was 104. Inside is quiet and meditative. The woman next to me was actually sleeping. Its a great art installation overall.

Simply put, this place is out of this world. Its a bit hard to find but worth the time looking for it.Inside the Student Activity Center, there are no signs nor location pamphlets guiding you to the installation. Some of the students arent even aware that this installation exists. Thanks to Google maps, it pointed us in the right direction. Its located on the roof right off the SAC; just go upstairs and get on the deck above; youll definitely see the circular corridor leading you to the entrance of the installation.

If you like to mediate or contemplate, this is like a little magical getaway during non-peak hours. Gorgeous and peaceful.

I have been following Turrells pieces for awhile now. I was really sad to have missed his exhibit at LACMA, so when I heard they had installed a new one at UT, it immediately got on my list to visit. We are blessed to have 2 installments in Houston and another in Austin. This one is on the 3rd floor of the SAC (student activity center). It is open to the public, and does not require an ID to enter. When you get to the 3rd floor just make a right and walk outside onto the rooftop patio area. They do have reservations online, but there isnt anyone there to take them. Just like many of the other exhibits, you are there to observe the sky. It usually is very peaceful and quiet. But you are more than welcome to take pictures. Come as close to sunset as possible if you want to see the many colors of the sky along with the interior lighting.

Why do they discourage photography here? This is a great place for photos on the third floor, rooftop garden of the Student Activity Center.
