Had a nice day at the zoo on Wednesday. Due to COVID, some food vendors are closed and a few exhibits are undergoing renovations, but we still saw a lot of our favorites! Got a hot cocoa as soon as we walked in and it kept us toasty til we were ready to stop exploring for lunch. The Tram in the middle of the zoo wasn’t running, but the Tram from Africa to N America was and we were thankful! Lots of walking but so much fun!

Normally I would give this do a five but since it’s been open during quarantine they’re not hardly any staff requiring people to wear their mask only at the exhibit where the animals are there was literally a group of 16 wearing no mask didn’t even have one I had to cover my eight month old child up because I was scared like it’s a common sense if you book the tickets were a mask and if you can’t follow directions then you don’t need to come to the zoo I believe that there needs to be more in forcing! I thought buying tickets and being a limited amount people would be adults but ignorant always shows through!

The NC Zoo in Asheboro is one of the best places to go with your family, even during the current pandemic. They have great structures and procedures in place to help keep everyone safe. Masks are mandatory, and distancing is suggested. Also, their route through the zoo is designed to keep the flow of traffic moving in one consistent direction. Theyre also requiring reservations to keep the crowd size down. The animals are tons of fun, the play areas are tons of fun for the kids, and its a great way to get in your exercise for the day! The food is a bit pricey, but definitely delicious!

Wow! I knew NC had a zoo but I live in Durham and was never motivated to make the short roadtrip to check it out until recently. So worth the drive! Its hours upon hours of walking some of the most beautiful grounds and seeing a wonderful variety of animals in well kept habitats. There are tons of safety protocols in place to keep families from being all on top of one another during Covid, including timed entry and one-way markings to keep you going in one direction, plus hand sanitizing stations at almost every turn. Bring comfortable walking shoes, water and snacks. Its a fun, fantastic way to wear a little one out. We will be back!

The zoo was actually very disappointing. They pride themselves on being the biggest, but realistically its the land thats huge which means a ton of walking, not more animals and exhibits. Ive been to much smaller zoos that were way more exciting and put together. We completed the entire zoo in roughly 2 hours. We only saw 55 animals excluding birds and snakes. That is pathetic. Some exhibits looked so unmaintained and many animals were alone, which is not what I like to see as far as keeping up animal morale. Some of the exhibits were not set up well for viewing. For example there are large boulders in the elephant exhibit that prevent you from seeing a large portion of where the animals go. That wasnt very well planned. I get that its October and during a pandemic right now, but Disney is thriving, restaurants are open. This is an outside open-air venue, and yet they have more than half the exhibits closed or under construction. Also they dont have signs telling you something it closed until you walk all the way up there and see its closed. Why wouldnt you put the sign at the beginning of the path? The tram wasnt running at the end, so you walk all that way and then need to double back half way through the park, to get a tram back to the beginning. It was a basic zoo. Nothing exotic. Nothing exciting. No great place to eat where you can see animals. Overall just disappointing and I wont be back.

Left our visit today feeling pretty sad for what we saw specifically in the lion/lioness and bear exhibits. Animals were showing signs of stereotypy, clearly lacking mental stimulation, the lioness was pacing back and forth in a bizarre way. Polar bear was the same. The swimming area was closed and the bear seemed hot and bored to the point of losing his mind. I don’t think I’ll bring my child here again, won’t support a business that is not properly caring for the animals. With that said, the zoo has nice enclosures, was pretty well organized and clean, and other animals like the rhinos, elephants and giraffes had large enclosures and seemed to be doing a lot better than the lions and bears.

The variety of animals, their living conditions. Of course things can be done to make it better. It would have been an experience of a life time if it was not for the situation at the ticket booth and our party. Its a pretty cool place because for the animals I think this is one of the larger zoos relative to space the animals get to have. Has a decent array of animals but the small indoor areas are closed courtesy of a pandemic - so thats understandable. Get ready for some pretty sizable walking as well; its like one long track with the map (likely not handed out because of the pandemic so snap a shot of one when you arrive) showing the path to walk to see each of the animals.

This seemed fair. However, the polar bears were also not out, the grizzlies were under renovation, bobcats were nowhere to be seen. I understand warm weather animals may need extra care in cold weather, but not the North American animals too. I was looking forward to polar bears in the cold weather. We were able to see cougars, seals, elk, puffins, bison, and arctic foxes. I do not recommend coming to a place where politics fly in the face of doing right. I told them that it is their choice, it’s their prerogative to choose how to treat their visitors, they made their choice.I choose to do business at mom and pop businesses and with this attitude, I will take my business else where.Turns out the zoo animals get better treatment than the humans coming to visit them. However, the animals have more than enough space to roam around, and you can even go on a ride through a field to see wild antelope and rhinos grazing. If you’re looking for an urban zoo, this is not for you. I see a lot of comments complaining about walking, construction, etc. The NC zoo is a STATE OWNED zoo. This means that conservation and care for the animals comes first. Some exhibits are ACRES big and it can be difficult to see some animals, while others might be right up against the glass. With that being said, the zoo is still well laid out, and while Covid has changed a few things, during normal operations there is a frequent tram service to help get you from one side of the park to the other, as well as a shuttle bus between parking lots. When the zoo was founded, the main focus was on conservation of North American wildlife. And for as long as I can remember they’ve had a North America and Africa section. The zoo has an Asia section under construction as well as an Australia section in the works. Personally I’d highly recommend waiting in line for the aviary, by far worth it despite the limited capacity.Food is good, though as expected it is a bit overpriced, however they do not check bags or anything at the door so you’re more than welcome to bring your own items in. As some other comments have mentioned, CURRENTLY a lot of the indoor attractions are closed, with the exception of the aviary mentioned above, and the zoo has taken this as an opportunity to undergo renovations to many of its buildings. With an entry price of only $15, I would not go so far as to say it’s a waste of money to go right now, but if you find the trip a bit lackluster, I would highly recommend coming back in a few years when the Asia and Australia sections are open. The NCDOT has also constructed a direct access spur from the US 64 bypass which is nearing completion, making access to the Zoo much easier. Unfortunately you really do need a car to get here, once again, not an urban zoo like Riverbanks or the Smithsonian.

This doesnt have the large amount of animals that the San Diego or Columbus (OH) Zoo has, but this zoo really does provide a natural habitat for their animals. This is an understatement and they do a great job with this that I wish other zoos would take note of.NC Zoo is one of only two state supported zoos in the country. Cool.I mentioned the habitats and exhibits. The animals, particularly the large NA and African animals have a ton of room to roam. This is awesome. The other habitats are more of the same as they also make it as close to possible as its natural habitat. They really do a great job here. There is plenty of walking because of this. Get your walking shoes on.Parking is available in both NA and Africa. Our trip to the zoo was great, even with some exhibits being closed for Covid. The staff was incredibly dedicated to ensuring the safety of members and guests, bottle fillers were plentiful enough for a hot day of walking, and timed entry ensured there was often no one in close proximity between viewing areas. Unfortunately other zoo guests werent mindful about social distancing at the viewing areas, ignoring the markings on the pavement and crowding in close to see animals. Masks were at least plentiful. The only animals we didnt get to see up close were rhinos and lemurs. 5 stars for the zoo itself and the zoo personnel!
