Hiked and camped here several times.Great place for hiking and backpacking. Good place to learn and test new gear. Not crowded.Note: This is a wilderness area - dont expect bathrooms or trash cans or water fountains.

Loved this place, be wary of rattlesnakes. Trail, Creek, old timey house and buildings. Nice open sky. Good star viewing. A few weirdies, but for us true nature and history-lovers, kinda like a playground in the sky.

Great place for a quiet hike. Walked 10 miles and just saw 4 people. The forest is beautiful on a mild mid-winter day!

Some good hiking trails for day hikes. Great place for parents with scouts because its not difficult or intense hiking, but youre still a little out there. I personally love taking the dog because its normally not very crowded.

Trails are not super well marked. Me and my friends got very lost and had to ask for help from other people passing by who had also previously gotten lost.

Its a decent hiking area, not a hard hike at all. It doesnt seem to be very well maintained, however. There were lots of trees and branches littering the path. Also, there was a bridge which was definitely not safe to use but nothing indicating that the path was closed or any other warnings. Still, it made an otherwise unremarkable hike a little more adventurous.

The area is beautiful. All trails are marked with a white which provides no benefit while hiking and you come to multiple paths to choose from. Since this was my first hike here, I chose to back track than to keep hiking the unknown path. This is the reason for four stars. Trail overall was clean, some trees down from hurricane Flo. I did cross paths with a 4 foot diamondback but he left me alone and I saw what looked to be a black bear about the size of a large dog passing through the woods about 20 yards away.

Lots of hiking options and the trails go on for miles. Very beautiful. The old homestead is worth a look. Some of the outbuildings have been restored to circa 1950. Be careful if you enter the house, the floors are spongy.

Closest Wilderness to the Triad!!! Nice to visit in early spring or late fall when higher elevations are less desirable. Great spots to camp, most fire pits have wood. Plenty of water to drink. Right next to an small airport unfortunately, LOTs of air traffic. Lots of insects. Bring bug spray. No glamourous Vistas, but hey, thats not why we live in NC anyways ;). Beautiful in its own way. I Recommend camp 3 and 5.

There is a homestead that is somewhat maintained. Nice walking trails as part of Uwharrie National Forest. Wear bright colors during hunting season as the wilderness is used by hunters. Some members of the Greensboro Astronomy Club use the parking lot area for setting up telescopes and star gazing. Its a Bortle 4 dark site.

Pros:-Great trail for hiking on a sunny day, offers lots of shade.-Options for hike distance, a few different trails to hike.Cons:-Map display in Thornburg parking lot extremely faded, nearly impossible to read map-One of the on-trail wooden signs has been tempered with. An incorrect arrow has been added. Got us lost for an hour or so.

The trail markers are not clear. We went to a dead end and had to turn back. Also, the wooden bridge at Thornburg Trail over the creek was out of its bases. The bridge surface was tilted to one side, it was dangerous to cross.

This is a really fun hiking location. There is a really good loop that took me about 3.5 hrs with my dog.The trail meanders across streams and up to hill tops over looking valleys in the distance. The trail was very well marked with white marks on trees. However if you plan to hike the loop for the first time I would take a map. Even a simple map would be helpful. There are a few off shoot trails that could lead you off the loop if you didnt take a map. Also I went in Nov and when I got to the parking lot there were tons of hunters. I almost left but I decided to hike the trail and only ran into only one hunter on the trail entire time. However, during hunting season I wouldnt dare wander off the trail near the parking lots. There are two trail heads off Lassiter Mill road. If you drive in from 49 south and exit off science hill road then left onto Lassiter a few miles down you will hit the Thornburg trail head on the left. If you pass this trailhead and if you keep going on Lassiter Mill road you will see a sign a few more miles down the road for Robbins Branch trail. Turn left on the dirt road for a few miles and you will see a parking area. This is the trail head and from this parking lot it took me 3.5 hrs. I think if you hike from the Thornburg trailhead it is much longer. Also Lassiter Mill road on Nov 22 2016 had road closed signs to local traffic only but I was able to get to both trail heads by staying on Lassiter. Also there were signs that no wood fires were allowed in the forest as of Nov 2016.It was a super nice hike and well worth the drive from Chapel Hill.
