This is not your typical long drive. Just make sure you dont have anybody with motion sickness in the car otherwise your car would be a victim of digested PB&J State route 88 is one of the beautiful routes in Arizona with crazy turns and twisted along the way ..you wont be able to drive past 20 mph mostly. Enjoy the ride. But Google just drops you out of no where and says its the destination but if you drive 5 miles more you will see a parking lot and that would be the best place to see a wonderful sunset ️

Great drive and scenery offers good photography early morning or late evening. Road is perfect but windy.

I drove Scenic Route 88 in Arizona in early May of 2018 as a happy accident but be forewarned .... this is not your typical scenic drive, nor for the faint of heart. This road is called Apache Trail and links Apache Junction and Roosevelt Dam and is 40 miles in length, youll very rarely get over 15 mph so give yourself time to enjoy the ride. It starts out paved and becomes a washer board unpaved road for the majority. It is very windy, narrow, has steep grades, sheer dropoffs, plus a section of multiple hairpin switchbacks and no guardrail for most of it. It is very challenging to drive and several websites/blogs I visited after this trip told the story that the Apache Trail was used by test drivers from General Motors Proving Grounds to test tires and vehicle maneuverability. It was by far the most fun and memorable part of my 5 day exploration of the Phoenix area but I wish I had been prepared better for what to expect. I was in a Kia Soul and handled it like a champ and I really didnt need anything more substantial but I did wonder whether my rental contract (insurance) would have covered me in the event of any incident. The fact that this was a numbered state highway really threw me for a loop. There are lots of reports on Google about this road and its history so if youre intrigued to learn more, its very possible.
