We ate here at 5:30-7:30 on Saturday anticipating fine, authentic cuisine and looking for a venue for a 40 person event. We were disappointed. While the pretzel and sauce was good, the Spatzel was a soggy, room temperature mush and our entrees were barely warm. Nothing tasted home made nor authentic. Service was fine but the food took a long time to get out of the kitchen despite a hand full of people there.

Im highly sad to what happened to this place. The German dishes almost disappeared, the beer is not well presented and the food is served in an bambu steamer. The food is ok but not nearly as good as from the old menu.My previous review and experience:Love it. The food is pretty good. So, the establishment is very nice. I’m very happy with the location and it’s super fun. Yet, the bartender downstairs was very rude and it highly affected the night. She had an attitude and generally treated everyone poorly. Beyond that, the place was great and so was the activity . I’d recommend them to reassess their hiring process. It’s unfortunate that a bartender can be so rude that it creates an unpleasant experience.

The food was actually very good but they only had a single overwhelmed server on a Friday night. She was very polite but had 6 or 7 tables with multiple people at each and I felt that was an unideal position to out someone in and the drinks were pretty weak. She also took about 20 tlminutes to even serve us our drinks and disappeared for another 10 without asking if we were ready to order food

Real Veal Schnitzel, even hard to find in Germany these days, awesome Spaetzle. Cant wait to go back and explore other things on the menu. Great beer selection. Ratskeller in the basement, concert venue on the third floor.

I’ve been going to the Heidelberg for years and always had good experiences but WOW the blonde bartender downstairs is a total smoke show! I haven’t been in months and met her last weekend. She was hilarious knowledgeable and helped my friends who don’t usually drink beer pick one they liked. I have never observed a bartender so captivating and charismatic in all my years of drinking. Good job Heidelberg! I will be back for more great beer and to enjoy such an engaging personality!

I love this bar, the main floor is a quiet atmosphere, the basement has darts and a fun college scene, and the upstairs is a killer night club. You havent gotten the true experience until you meet. Kelsey, Ann, and the AMAZING Alana. Their staff will make anyone feel like an Ann Arbor VIP. If you are not here Friday nights in Ann Arbor you are missing out.

I ordered carryout. Thre food was horrible! The beer cheese was like water, the stroganoff was very vinegary and the spaetzle was spicy and very over cooked, it was just mush. The gravy was terrible. I ordered veggies and got potatoes salad! The only good thing was the potato pancakes, but even they were cooked to long. I have loved the heidelberg my whole life, my parents ate here every week after they opened in the 60s. I am so disappointed. I waited all thru the pandemic to have this dinner, and thats what I got. Wow. Im wishing for the old days.....

I come to this special place often as I enjoy the special atmosphere that is unique to this restaurant. The personel is extraordianrillyremarkably loving and experienced. The service is impressively rapid. Also, the food they prepare is good. I came more than once and I was always satisfied. The payment is decent. I suggest this place to my friends and family.

The Heidelberg had been a favorite spot of mine since 2013, but it’s fallen far from its former glory. It’s now a husk of its former self since it was acquired by new owners. My most recent visit to the Heidelberg was marked by a distinct lack of service, any service. You order on your phone, walk to the bar to order your drink, and wait for a basket to be delivered to your table by somebody in the back. They’ve removed many of my favorite authentic German food from the menu and replaced it with chicken tenders, sandwiches, and mediocre food.The bar is good, I might return in the future for the boot. The food isn’t great, the service is non-existent.

Oh the memories...I enjoy this place thoroughly. I dont drink anymore, but I can still go there with my friends and have fun.

One of my favorite things to do is go to the basement in Heidelberg and enjoy a big boot of Angry Orchard and play some darts! Such a fun experience and a favorite spot in Ann Arbor!

Gone are the days of oldThe decor remains but little else of this older Ann Arbor staple. You will be guaranteed some German beer on tap, but there are better places to go for that. The menu is now extremely limited, only 3 German entrees...additionally the portions seemed halved but the cost the same. The quality has diminished as well. The new electronic menu system with no actual waiter seems to result in a backed up kitchen and long wait. I miss the old Heidelberg. Seek Metzgers if you wish some true German food and hospitality. The basement at Heidelberg will suit you just fine if you only wish a Boot of Beer but little else.

Odd visit, we remember when high school kids ate here with white tablecloths in 2000. But its a cozy bar now.The food is made in a joint kitchen somewhere else and my viener shnitzle was brought to the table in bamboo steamer. Were all laughing about this.

If I may; this is probably one of the best German restaurants in the area. The service was good and the decor was fitting. I absolutely loved the pretzel fondue appetizer, it was one of the best soft pretzels I have had yet, the cheese that came with it was a bit thin, but still tasty itself. The dish I had was plentiful - I am glad they did not shy away from the helpings, making it feel more homely culturally. I take a star away, however, even though the service was nice, it took a while for our waiter to wait on us - even though there were barely any people there, we were there for a long time.

This place used to be a place where you could go for a nice meal. Now you have to order from an app and half the menu has been gutted. The other half was replaced with cheap substitutions. Only one type of sausage, no sour kraut, and no fresh pretzels. Theres more Mexican food on the menu than German. The food even came on paper plates.If you want a better experience, go to the Old German

Feels like authentic Bavarian restaurant. Food is good, beer is awesome and so is apple strudel.

This is a recent downgrade. There is a new ordering process that is very strange for a place where you should be able to sit, have a nice meal and some good drinks. You now have to order your food over the Internet, pay for it remotely and it comes in a cardboard box. This includes my $13 chicken sandwich and fries and the Rouladen for $17. The drinks you order from the bar or wait staff. Its all still good, but the presentation does not match the pricing in my opinion.

Bartender was great, everything else was dissapointing. The menu is more American sports bar than German pub. German beer selection was lacking with multiple drafts on the menu not on tap this night. The ordering system is just silly, why should I have 2 different bills, 1 for food and 1 for the bar, it makes no sense. They actually gave us 2 separate I-pods to order. A lot of simple things would really help this place. Get rid of the online food order all it does is frustrate customers. Get some good german beers of tap. Swap chicken fingers for some German Staples and this place would be a winner.

Had a birthday party expecting many German Dishes to choose from.. They have 4 entries which are little more than over priced appetizers.. the service is run by people who have no idea what they’re serving and the imported beers are great they have a lot to choose from if you’re just looking for a beer and bar food then you’ve found it. I won’t be going there anymore, if you’re looking for good German beer AND cuisine go to Metzgers or Old German. If I could give this place a 0/5 I would.. very disappointed how far they’ve plummeted.

Great atmosphere, the interior of the house is adorned with beautiful murals. The one waitress /bartender became overwhelmed by the crowd that followed me. As someone who lived in Germany for a couple of years, I cant speek to the menus authenticity. I had a Reuben that wasnt grilled and the fries lacked any season. A small bit of research will give you insight, I asked for mayo for the fries and was disappointed by the consistency! Surely they could do better, I look forward to a better experience on my next visit.

Only 3 German entrees with no side options. It was cold. Heated with kerosene that created pungent fumes. Red cabbage and schnitzel was good though.

It was shredded, wilted, iceberg lettuce. Dressing was horribly sweet...made the salad worse, if that was even possible. My boyfriend ordered chicken tenders w fries. It was clearly a friend chicken breast cut into strips. Below average food quality.Bartender and wait staff were very nice which is why Im graciously giving them 2 stars instead of just 1.

This is my favorite bar. The food is delicious, the drinks are fantastic, and the staff is phenomenal. If you need an incredible bar to slide up to, this is the place to be, and Tony is the man to see. They are committed to the enjoyment of the patrons of this bar. Even just tonight, a massive crowd of bar crawl idiots were crowding the entrance, causing problems for other patrons. despite not buying drinks and harassing the other guests, they felt entitled to stay. The staff handled the situation expertly in clearing the fire hazard and saving the night for my group, and other patrons as well.Long story short, come here for a drink, great company, and fantastic food. Dont come here if youre an entitled jack wagon.

I actually like Heidelberg, but after my latest visit its just so frustrating. Four reasons are costing them three stars:1) Service has historically been pretty iffy. This latest time, our server completely forgot to put in our food order.2) That would have been fine, but then dont try to blame it on the kitchen. I dont care how backed up they are, theres no reason 1 appetizer takes an hour, especially when other tables sat later got served first. Just own it dude. Oh and dont try to charge me for food I never received.3) Maybe service would be better overall if management staffed more than 2 bartenders and didnt have 1 of them also wait tables. On a night of a major football game. Seriously.4) Beer prices are really high. $20 for 3 pints? What.

Hole in the wall bar in the basement, restaurant on the street level floor, club upstairs. No frills, but good spot to get drinks and hang with friends. The bar tenders in the basement are awesome and always serve patrons quickly.

Devastated inside! My husband and I used to make a special trip every summer to spend the day in Ann Arbor, culminating with delicious German food at the Heidelberg! This time we invited my parents for a nice evening out. After an hour drive, disappointed doesnt go far enough. The food was overpriced, and the menu has been completely changed, and not for the better. There are now only 3 German items on the weird new digital menu. We ordered them all to try. The food was obviously made ahead, reheated, and served on paper plates! I cannot describe how truly awful the entire experience was. My dad wants everyone to know that he always takes a doggy bag home, but left his leftovers behind because didnt want to punish the dog #savage.P.s. theres one bartender, no wait staff, and the guests are intended to get their own silverware and condiments from a cafeteria cart. The condiments were empty, just like the place...Sorry, Im obviously in the anger stage of grief about the sudden change, and loss of future Heidelberg food. Never. Going. Back.

We had family in from out of town and wanted to take them out for German food. Haven’t been in to the Heidelberg in a few years. The last time we went there, they had a full Herman menu and we had some good food. This time it was a major disaster. We walk in and are each presented with an iPad that we are told lists the food and drinks. The food menu only listed 3 German dishes and no sides. The sign out from said it was happy hour until 10, so we asked what the specials were- the waitress told us it does not matter because it ended at 6. We told her about the sign and she said oh I’m training - I’ll find out when the other staff person gets back. She did find out- we ordered some drinks and picked our meals out on the iPad. She then brought live another tablet and told us to use that one to place the orders. The menu on that tablet WAS NOT THE SAME as the one on the iPads and did not contain the tofu options listed on the iPad version. The out of town guests ordered the rouleden and the locals meat eaters ordered the schnitzel. I tried to order the tofu sandwich but they no longer have tofu. We also ordered two appetizers. The online ordering system sucks and there is no way to make any order modifications. You also have to pay before your order placed. We waited about 20 min after placing our order when the waitress came out and said they are out of rouleden. So folks changed their orders to schnitzel as well. I asked if we could get the appetizers before the meal- she said we just bring things out when they are done but she would check. She then brought out deep fried hard pretzel bites and bacon. The group got the schnitzel a bit later and it was not edible - extremely over cooked and hard. Our out of town guests left disgusted with the food. Extremely disappointed in the service, the lack of German menu, the inconsistent menus on different tablets, and the food quality. Also bathroom smelled strongly of urine.

Used to go to heidelberg specifically for the chicken tenders (well and the boots). Last time I went it appeared they changed their menu and they didnt have tenders anymore - only strips which appeared to be a sliced chicken schnitzel which was nowhere near as good.

No Waitresses or Waiters. Barely a bartender we wanted to try their beers but their Taps were dry for several beers that we were trying. They have some sort of a web-based ordering system from the tables absolutely difficult my 20 year old and 13 year old both founded bod and disturbing that it was so difficult to order food. Did not like the experience at all.

Wonderful atmosphere, but the menu has changed from the one online serving less German food than what I would have like to see, really only 3 or 4 main dishes, the rest were not german plates. Both of our meals were served in boxes, even as dine-in orders, I would have preferred to have it on a plate.

This was my first time here and I have to agree with some of the other reviews. The place looked promising when entering, it also looked inviting. We chose to sit at the bar and the beer selection was good. We ended up choosing the kolsch beer which was very good. But the menu wasnt at all what we were expecting. They only had 3 german meals to choose from, which left us disappointed, so instead we chose some appetizers which were not good in fact do not and I repeat do not get the pretzels, they were hard, over cooked, and tasted nothing like a pretzel. The wings were ok and the poutine would have been ok, but there was large clumps of cheese on them which was hard to eat. Sadly, we were not impressed and will never go back!

My fiancée and I have made frequent trips to Ann Arbor specifically for Heidelbergs and today we left without eating. The only reason they get a star is because the server was a lovely gentleman. They very recently changed their menu to an entirely “not German” cuisine and that is very disappointing. Also they only way you can order is by using an iPhone and sending your order directly to the kitchen. They used to have great sandwiches like the Thunder Bird and Reuben (that they named after the restaurant) and they got rid of them.

The bar tender up there was just obnoxious.Like, Stfu, dude. I assure you, you are not nearly as interesting as you think.

It was one on our favorite places in downtown because the service and the German food, now they took that away.The food has good quality but it is really weird to order it online. We will come back when they get rid of that ridiculous app. Staff is friendly but they are overwhelmed so also the drinks took time to arrive.

Beer selection was fantastic and the food variety was great. The rouladen could have cooked a bit longer. The taste was there, but it wasnt as tender as it should have been. The red cabbage was good, but could have used a little more flavor, maybe more apples, maybe more vinegar, the spices were just right. The coleslaw was amazing as was the spaetzle and gravy.Staff was friendly and very helpful.

Loved this place the first time we went but this time it was terrible. The food was over cooked to the point that it was hard to chew threw our potato pancakes. The saurbrauten was dried out and chewy as well and tasted like basic beef roast with basic jarred beef gravy on it. For how much we paid for two people, I expected it to be better.

They ruined this place. No more waiters. You have to order off your phone. Food is served in a box with plastic utensils. More single-use plastic to go in a landfill. The food was not good, weinerschnitzel was dry. Oh, and you dont get any discount for the reduced service. Im not a complainer but it was awful.

My friends and I come here on occasion to reunite and have a few beers, usually we get the boot sizes which is always a good time. The bartender Josh was very friendly and helpful and made ordering a breeze. We never had to wait very long for refills and the pub food was top notch. I recommend trying either the beer batter chicken strips or everyone loves the Heidelberg Reuben. This location has three levels also for a variety of an experience, top floor is a club atmosphere, middle and main floor is general bar area and the bottom floor is rowdy college atmosphere.

Edit 5/1 - I have gone back several times now. The bar service has always been great (hence the plus 1 star). I still think the up-top atmosphere is still confusing, but the food and service has been good to great every time.The food was excellent and the service was great, so why three stars? For me, it comes down to atmosphere. The dining room is beautiful, like you are stepping back in time with European antiques, communal sitting areas and beautiful carved wood pieces. Then you notice the loud pop/disco tunes blaring from the speakers, combine that with Ipads to order from and loud music from the Battle of the Bands happening at 7pm on a Friday and you get a dizzying effect of not really knowing where you are. I think their attempts to modernize the place are alienating the majority of their clientele who want to have an experience reminiscent of old-world Europe or at least of what the Heidelberg used to be. Just my two cents.

Heidelberg canceled my DoorDash delivery order two minutes after I placed it on May 5 at 1:23 am with the non-specific explanation unable to fulfill order (restaurants do this when they dont want to make the food, if it was one item that was out of stock I would have gotten a phone call from them asking if I wanted a different item, this has happened from other restaurants- my Heidelberg order was originally 3 items). If Heidelberg wants to change their food delivery hours they need to update them with DoorDash. Since it was paid by credit card, I essentially gave out a $33 interest-free loan for 5-7 business days.

Me and my date had never tried German food before and we had the combination platter with all the entrees. Let me tell you, that was a great first experience! The food looked amazing and tasted even better! Definitely would suggest bringing a few friends and trying it out!

I came here in the dead of afternoon because I was stood up for a meeting, and I was starving. The sole customer in the establishment, I ordered a beer and the Heidelberg sandwich. I was not prepared for how delicious the sandwich was. The meat was incredibly seasoned and salted, the rye was like buttered heaven...I was in love. I sat there all by my lonesome and devoured it, and was happy. I also enjoyed the heavy wooden atmosphere of the place, which reminded me of pubs in London and Belgium.

The first time I went here with my girlfriend it was quiet, the service was great, and the food was good enough especially with the low cost. But the next time we went it was the opposite experience. It was dead quiet but the waiter visited us once to refill our drinks after taking our $60 order and dropping off the food.We get our cheque, Im not unhappy with the place but Im not happy. I look at it, and the waiter had added a $12 gratuity to a $60 order!? It was only myself and my girlfriend so none of it made sense. Finally the waiter comes and has a terrible excuse (that because I am only 21 I wont tip well...).The manager changed the cheque to what it wouild have cost with restaurant week and offered us a 25 dollar gift card which we declined. Why would we come back to a place that had lied about their dinner menu being over with (I realize now that the waiter wanted us to pay more and then tip well). Overall, food was solid, manager was nice, but what the heck kind of a place is this where they lie about an ongoing deal and then try to cheat me out of my own money??

I cannot rate zero stars. We made a reservation for 8 at 2p. I know there were at least 2 other large reservations, that also walked out. There was one server scheduled, she told us that. We sat there for 50 minutes after ordering beers and appetizers and received 2 apps the entire time we were there. After 1 hour and no apologies we left. It is clear management does not know how to schedule for an event. This was an extreme disappointment and a damper on a great day.

We love the laid back environment and the home cooked tasting food. Our only complaint is the menu changes often and we havent been able to get the same menu items each time for that reason.

I did an interview for a job here. I was told someone would get back with me if I got the job. No one ever called or emailed me so my experience with this restaurant is they arent reliable. Will never return.

Since new ownership the quality of food has not changed but the quantity has gone down quite a bit. The prices have remained. Still very good, just wish the portion sizes were bigger

Cool little basement bar. Go there to drink out of the boot! Couple of bar games to keep you entertained as well. Second time being there and it has been awesome both times.

Craving German food. Was not disappointed, well worth the hour drive. Enjoyed the interior and staff treated us right. Definitely recommend the Sauerbraten.

German restaurant with three German dishes. You can get a quesadilla if you would like. This place was one that my family visited whenever we were in AA. Something terrible happened. Sad!

We decided to check this place out for restaurant week and had a pretty interesting experience. Our server was obviously new to the place (and possibly serving in general). He was young and visibly flustered, albeit reasonably so as it appeared he was the only person taking care of the main dining room for a while. Despite this, he was very kind and working hard to attend to his tables.The deal for restaurant week included an appetizer. We got the sausage and cheese platter which was delicious. Unfortunately, it took a very long time for our entrees to arrive. According the server, and later reiterated by another server who was obviously less new, there was a mixup in the kitchen that lead to the delay on our meals.Our meals did eventually arrive and were delicious despite the wait. For our troubles the staff took care of the cost of our meals, which were already heavily discounted for restaurant week, and thanked us for our patience. All in all, it was a pleasant experience and Im likely to try them out again due to their apologetic nature and because the food was honestly very good.If you guys read this, thank your staff for their hard work and consider finding a new person to manage the schedule if this is a common occurrence. New employees should not be left to hold down the fort alone, especially not during restaurant week.Side note: the beer menu was pretty robust and prices were reasonable.

I ordered online. The order said it would be ready for pickup in 20 minutes. I get to the restaurant 30 minutes after I ordered just for them to tell me that my order was cancelled because the item I ordered hasnt been on the menu in months.

A timeless Ann Arbor experience that keeps me coming back, again and again. Ive heard rumors that there are floors other than the basement, but Ive never experienced them first-hand.

Loved it. Great food. I have been to Heidelberg Germany and this reminded me of my visit.

If you want to have a fantastic time, get a boot. If you want to be able to remember it, only get a one liter boot.
