This place is amazing! Friendly staff, especially The gentleman named Mac in one of the WW2 hangers. Make sure to say hi when you see him, he’s a great storyteller; you’ll make his day and I’m sure he’ll make yours! The boneyard is massive! I’ve never seen so much history in the desert. Little planes, crop dusters, passenger planes, jets, bombers to choppers. You’ll see it all it it’s well formation.Stayed over five hours walking around, getting lunch as well as reading about all the history behind almost every plane. Definitely bring water and snacks and comfy shoes and be patient. Lots to see!

The areas low humidity in the 10%-20% range, meager rainfall of 11 annually, hard alkaline soil, and high altitude of 2,550 feet allowing the aircraft to be naturally preserved for cannibalization or possible reuse, Davis-Monthan is the logical choice for a major storage facility.

A must see for any airplane or military buff and an enjoyable tour for the average lay person. Great tour on nice bus. The guide was very informative and wonderful at pointing out special planes and stopping so we could take pictures. Would take the tour again just because there is so much to see that it is hard to take it all in in one visit.

Interesting place to visit. Fun for the whole family. Prepare to plan to have plenty of time. It takes up a better part of a day. If you want the tour of all the planes on the base you need a security pass. Before you go there is a back ground check done on you. You need that before you can go. It can take up to 6 weeks so plan ahead for it.

A lot of people are complaining about how these planes are wasted and rotting. Apparently the planes are there because of a U.S.-Soviet deal to decommission military aircraft, and lay them out like that (instead of recycling, reusing, etc) so the Soviets could see them via satellite. Cool historical site, even if you just drive by.

The Airplane graveyard outside of Tucson, Arizona, is situated on the Davis-Monthan Air Force Base. Also called The Boneyard, over 4,000 military aircraft are parked on the base to be used for parts and scrap metal. Bombers, cargo planes, fighter jets and more have been put to rest at this almost 2,600-acre site. Specific aircraft include Hercules freighters, A10 Thunderbolts and the F-14 Tomcat. Some of the planes date back to the Cold War and Vietnam War. The site was established for plane storage in 1946 after WWII. Tucson was chosen as the area has high altitude, low humidity, infrequent rainfall and hard alkaline soil. You can take guided tours of the area, or use Google Maps, which offers an excellent aerial view of the site!

Its not a graveyard. Its essentially a storage location for retired aircraft. The entities that store aircraft here pay for the service, and periodically will have parts pulled for serviceable aircraft or even regenerate aircraft from here to be put into active service.Often aircraft from here are sold to foreign governments or to other government branches - such as the Forest Service or Coast Guard purchasing retired USAF C-130s or C-27s.

An aircraft boneyard (American English) or aircraft graveyard (British English) is a storage area for aircraft that are retired from service. Most aircraft at boneyards are either kept for storage with some maintenance or have their parts removed for reuse or resale and are then scrapped. Boneyard facilities are generally located in deserts, such as those in the Southwestern United States, since the dry conditions reduce corrosion and the hard ground does not need to be paved.[ ][ ] The 09th Aerospace Maintenance and Regeneration Group in Tucson, Arizona, the largest facility of its kind, is colloquially known as The Boneyard.[ ]

Superlatives overwhelm the mind when you first come upon this Airplane Boneyard southeast of downtown Tucson. Thousands upon thousands of jet fighters, bombers, and helicopters mothballed and lined up as far as the eye can see. Every major military air system built since World War II is represented here. It takes at least a half hour just to drive around the public perimeter and all that gleaming waste. The simplistic gut response is to think of all those families in Africa, Asia, or even Appalachia, who could have eaten off the funds squandered here, all the diseases that could have been cured, all the cities that could have been cleaned up. But the truth, of course, is always more complicated. Without the vast expenditures on military hardware reflected here, there would have been no post-war American economic miracle.Or so they say. Still, it seems a long way from this vast military-industrial complex to Tombstone, 64 miles down the road, where settlers fended for themselves and took on their outlaws a handful at a time. #localguides

The Boneyard is extremely beautiful. Unfortunately you can only go here through Puma air and space museum which is on the other side of the boneyard entrance so dont waste your time going to this entrance or the visitor center they have here as they will just redirect you to the museum. Also the tickets sale out real fast at the museum so be there well before the 11AM opening time

Wow! The aerial view of this place is spectacular and the terrestrial view is astonishing. With about 4000 aircraft under its care, it is the World largest aircraft storage and preservation facility. Also called Aircraft graveyard by some people, it is the United States Air-force aircraft and missile storage and maintenance facility in Tuscon, Arizona situated in Davis(Montana Airforce Base). This Center previously called Aerospace Maintenance and Regeneration Center (AMARC) brings back memories to many retired and serving Air-force personnel because of the range of aircrafts here and their maneuvering and devastating capabilities. The aircrafts here include Sikorsky SH-60 Seahawk Helicopters, B-1 bombers, Marine Corps MCDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II Fighters etc. This center established after World War 2 is well sited because the arid climate of the area is really helpful in preserving these aircrafts as there is very little humidity in the air that would make the metals rust. This Military Aircraft storage and disposition center is one in a million.

You get the tickets for the tour at the Pima Air and Space Museum. You will have to provide a photo ID as this is an active Military base. The Tour bus takes you through the Boneyard . Not really the proper term as this is the Department of Defense Aviation Reutilization and Maintenance Facility where aircraft are stored, repaired and when they no longer have a use to the DoD they are stripped down for parts (some for our coalition partners) and shredded or destroyed. The materials that can be recycled are. The docents on the bus tour are mostly former Air Force Pilots so can answer almost any question people have about the planes.

Drove from Las Vegas to Tucson 1000mile round trip to visit the Boneyard. Would I do it again? Yes! Even though you are not allowed off the coach. The sight of these planes is unbelievable. What made it so special was the commentary on every plane, how the different sections of the base worked that was supplied by our guide. Who was a volunteer. An ex airforce senior citizen. A big thank you to him.To see so many unusual planes and then lanes and lanes of planes as far as the eye can see. If you get a chance its a must see.Dont bother with the restaurant, service and the food was c??p

Its great and amazing, Its a graveyard of Mothballed Planes,B-52 Stratofortress heavy bomber,Most B-52s in the U. S. fleet, More than 3500 plane graveyard giving a sensation. An airplane graveyard is not just a fence around airplane carcasses and piles of scrap metal. Rather, many millions of dollars worth of surplus parts are salvaged to keep active aircraft flying, including U. S. planes that have been sold to foreign governments.

I love the Pima Air & Space Museum (PASM). You can bring children there. I used to have an annual membership @ PASM and it was a family pass. At that time my daughter loved it there. At PASM they have childrens activities and tours; they also give tours to childrens schools/classes sometimes (depends on the school/age of child). If I could afford it Id buy another pass, but I cannot afford it at this moment.Highly recommended the Pima Air & Space Museum for all ages.

I was stationed at DM way back in the early 70s. Back then you had to know someone, who knew someone to get a tour. I worked in the engine show that sat at the very top of the flightline. There were 12 fully loaded and ready to leap back to life B-52 Bombers. Anyone of them could be in flight within hours. It was awesome to see them sitting there everyday. Ready to roar back to life. I saw the first military landing of the first C-5. OMG! I had never seen anything so big in my life.
