Ive been coming here for over 3 years now, at least once a week to watch the newest movie that comes out Thursday night. I always go to the bar and meet the lovely faces of my favorite bartenders (Johnny, Rollin, & Luis) who always make me feel at home. Best theater in town.

Ive only ever been here twice and the first time was on a sort of out with friends thing but we werent in there too long. The second time was in October of 2019, as I attended The Rocky Horror Picture Show that apparently they host every year so there were a lot of regulars and so it was a very very festive crowd with lots of yelling of profanities (which was awesome!) as this was done around midnight or a little before that, so it was an all-adult crowd so no worries there.I was on a date with someone who has been to this event every time since it started so I was able to know what to do and all that. A great viewing area and looks nice and fancy in there. Overall a highly recommended place.

A gem. Lovingly restored and well-maintained, this room sits over 500 and is host to the Traverse City Film Festival. From its plush seats to its star-dotted ceiling, this is the perfect venue to catch a flick. A non-profit organization, the staff is comprised of volunteers who clearly love the place!

The atmosphere is unlike anything I’ve experienced in a movie theatre in quite some time! The staff are amazing, cordial, and professional. The fact that they honor the military as well lends to how remarkable this establishment is. Best movie experience I’ve ever had!

The State Theatre transports you back in time and provides you with a nostalgic and memorable movie experience. You are first greeted by incredible volunteers who really enhance this experience with their obvious passion for this Theatre. Next, if you’re in the mood for a treat, you will notice the more than reasonable concession prices. Note: A large bag of popcorn for $5 is virtually unheard of in 2017.The acoustics, seating and decor is easily worth the price of admission. The State Theatre makes you fall in love with movies all over again.

Very nice place to experience a movie! Good large screen in a single cavernous room, not a postage stamp of a screen like some modern places. Balcony seating available. The sound was at a reasonable volume, which is a plus to me because I usually have a rough time dealing with the decibel levels at the movies.Cons: one screen only, so if you are with a group, you cant split up and watch different things.

So nostalgic! So much like it used to be in its glory days only with better upholstery. The popcorn was, dare I say, affordable. Not to mention it was movie popcorn so it doesnt get better than that. Popcorn, drinks, tickets for 3 well under $50. Has wheelchair accessible areas right in the middle rows. A balcony! My grandkids loved the stars on the ceiling. Its run by volunteers I think. We had a little mishap before the movie started with a spilled bucket of popcorn, when we asked for a broom to sweep it up they swept it up for us and replaced the popcorn free of charge. Visual and sound quality very good. Plus, you have the option to purchase stainless steel straws for $1! All in all a great movie experience.

One of my favorite places in all of Traverse City! The state theater is an awesome place to take in a show or movie. Favorite thing here is sitting in the balcony watching a movie with some of their amazing popcorn. Definitely be sure to check out their showings for their late night Friday Flicks that are only $5 for two tickets. And excellent way to affordably have date night.

Old fashioned movie theater. Manned by volunteers to keep the prices low, I highly recommend attending this venue and supporting its ideals. Feeling of community. Theater goers are verbally welcomed and thanked for coming. Has free movie offerings spring break week each year. Seats are comfortable and do have movement, so not super old-fashioned. Usual snack offerings in lobby. Fantastic.

Great selection of movies old and new and lots of cheap movie specials everyone can afford. The popcorn is just horrible though, not fresh popped and no butter or even butter flavored toppings which ruins the whole movie experience for me. I really must have a nice bucket of buttered popcorn when I go out to see a movie in the theater.

Non-profit theaters are the way to go! Its so beautiful inside, and every movie Ive gone to see, from their blockbuster new releases to their Christmas classics to their fun-filled matinee, has been an experience. If you are visiting Traverse City for any reason, stopping by the State or the Bijou is a perfect complement to your stay. Also, the concessions and tickets are so sensibly priced as to ruin you for all other theaters.
