A must visit when traveling through Californias oil country stretching from McKittrick onward through Taft, California. Museum is packed with artifacts, photographs, and models derived from the past and present. Docents are impeccable and steeped in oil field history and lore. The museum is clean and comfortable. Highly recommended as an adjunct to any history class from middle school through University. When visiting, dont forget to say hello too Pauline! Cheers.

Its a great place to take kids. Its mostly a meusuem for older oil technology. I would like to see them get some modern equipment next to the older equipment so kids can compare how much its improved. It would also be nice if they could more realisticly talk about the environmental implications of drilling for oil and fracking/other oil industry practices.

Open weekends only and by appointment. Tells the local story of oil drilling and the community that grew up around it. Unusual collection of drilling equipment and featuring artifacts and dioramas illustrating life in the early oilfields. Well worth the trip.

Taft, California. This museum/plantation is one of a kind. I have never been to any type of museum catered to petro. The equipment and the sizes are jaw dropping. They have a gigantic oil drilling rig in the middle of the park... It was surreal to see how this old school mechanism worked w/ the plethora of pullies made from wood and rubber.Access/Roads: APaved.Parking: BPlenty on dirt.Distance: CAppx 120 miles north of DTLA.Appx 40 miles southwest of bakersfield.Costs: AFreeNearby Attractions:Jack dilly squat. hmm. theres some dirt everywhere. Conclusion: AThis is one of my favorite museums between LA and SF. Its a must for anyone who cares about these things. No one cares for Taft or the nearby region, and there is no reason too except to visit this museum or visit the nearby prison.Safe travelings.IG @cigarcpa.

Hugh Howser of Calif Gold loved this place and did episodes on the museum, Taft, and surrounding area. The docents really give a flavor of what it was like. The transportation is a must see. The old pumping units, standard ends, are well exhibited. ALL this is located in the 5th largest oil field in the Unitsd States. So must to learn here. The town also has Fort Sutter replica to scale.
