I am so glad that they kept that part of the old Great Northern Railroad Depot when they prepared for Expo 74. If you are old enough, remember the jumble of railroads, trestles, bridges, depots, warehouses, mills, and other structures obscuring the otherwise beautiful Spokane Galls? Thats all gone except the Clock tower. It reminds us of what made Spokane what it is. Thankfully, we have found more aesthetic and more environmentally friendly ways to accomplish the same things.

The only part left of the Great Northern Rail Depot, completed in 1902 is this 155 feet tall, four-sided lock. Once a week, a technician climbs the 5 stories to adjust the time, and wind the crank 99 times to ensure for the next week, it works. Interestingly, the tower has never had bells but relies on a digital speaker system.

This was a very interesting site. I wouldnt travel to Spokane just to see it, but it is worth seeing in conjunction with the falls and the rest of the park.

Three clock tower is a beautiful historic monument in Spokane. There are a few stairs to get up to touch the tower, you cannot go inside it.

Probably the most iconic symbol of Spokane, the Great Northern Clocktower is all that remains of the once bustling rail yard that is now Riverfront Park. Remodeled for the 74 Worlds Fair Expo, the clock tower was preserved to remind us of the heritage Spokane has served as a rail town.
