We love SBS. Great way to get out on the water for us without all the headaches of owning your own boat. The staff is super friendly and we have never had any issues despite a full summer of being out on the water several times a week. Hunter and Jim are both great and always super friendly. Definitely one of our best choices last year, and I’m so glad they’re able to stay open during COVID so we can still be out on the water.

Amazing place. Amazing people. This is the best way to go about getting on the water in seattle. Price is fair. Logistics are easy. SBS is an all around win.

Prior to signing up they make it seem as though everything is a breeze. After taking 2 classes to take out the boat and making reservations to take out boats for a special occasion we received a phone call saying that our boat was broken and there were no other options. Then Aaron one of the people working there calls me a day later yelling for 30 minutes saying that we arent qualified to drive the boats. He said we could get a refund and when I emailed to get the refund no response. This Aaron has no clue on how to treat customers and Im surprised he has a business.

As much as I enjoy boating, SBS seems the wrong place for it. Even though most people there are nice (esp. Aaron), I did have multiple issues with boats not working properly and not having covers on the boats to protect against rain. But the worst experience happened just now when I was considering renewing my membership. As the season ends in fall, I was expecting to get my 2016 security deposit refunded at the end of the season. Did not happen. So I contacted SBS in March per email (Jim & Aaron) - no response. I sent another mail in April - still crickets. Entering a costly membership like SBS has a lot to do with trusting the organization and I did trust and like SBS besides the issues, so it is very disappointing to me that I have to chase them and involve legal assistance to get my last year deposit back.

Be aware of Seattle Boat Shares (SBS) dishonesty and the neglect of their boats.Every boat we used had issues of some kind. Recently we took an express cruiser to Orcas Island and it ended up being the trip from HELL. Had we known what we were in for we would have ran away from SBS! We were told this boat was in great shape but after going thru the locks we realized the windshield wipers were broken so we had to go really slow in the sound due to wind. We ended up losing our slip and had to tie up to a buoy. Once we tied up we realized the toilet, heater and microwave were all broken as well. We felt like prisoners eating cold food, sleeping in the cold and not being able to use the restroom. The next morning we had to wait for other boaters to get up and move from the dock so we could use a working toilet. I don’t think I need to tell you how happy my wife was. Here is the best part. As we were heading back the boat lost power. I called Aaron at SBS and he instructed me to turn the boat over so he cold hear how it sounded and then told me to call for a tow. I am so glad I paid for tow assistance! This would have cost me $2,000 - $3,000! Per SBS if you take a boat out into the sound you are 100% responsible for any issues regardless of whose fault it is. Our 4hr boat ride soon became 12 hours confined to SBS’s crappy boat. We go to a toilet and our car around 2am. We then received an email from Aaron and Jim the owner stating that because we turned the motor over after loosing power we ruined the motor and they wanted to fine us for this. I replied that I did what Aaron instructed me to do and that I am not responsible for this. They said I ran the fuel so low that the boat lost power and this was my fault. My response was that someone should have told me that the fuel gauge was not working accurately and to keep the fuel level above half tank. We would have gladly stopped for fuel had we know the gauge was not working and that this would have saved us 12 hours on a boat without a toilet.I asked for a refund of the balance of my membership, my deposit and for a copy of the video and pre-inspection of the boat per the contract. SBS responded with “they are not doing these because they are understaffed”.SBS’s solution to their problem of running a boat share with a fleet of under maintained boats was very disappointing and Jim’s excuse was that he did not have enough cash to refund me what I was asking for. Of the $7,000+ I paid SBS for 3 outings and their required training classes I received a little over $2,500 back.SBS is a scam, their boats are not maintained as they promised. This is why you are 100% responsible for the boats when you leave the lake. I asked the man who towed us if he tows a lot of SBS boats and he said that he didn’t want to say anything bad about another company but that he does tow a lot of SBS boats and that it was his opinion that SBS boats are not maintained as they should be. After dealing with SBS and paying an attorney I felt everyone considering SBS should know my story. If I was you I would not give SBS your business, they are not honest! There are several other options for renting a boat without having to pay for their membership. You don’t want to be a member of SBS. One bad outing will cost you a lot of money. SBS charges a large membership fee to commit you to paying more fees to use their boats. The membership only lets you use the boat at a discounted rate so you are still paying for each time you take out a boat. You will be much happier working with a company that does not ensnare you with a large membership fee and maintains their boats as they promise to keep you as a customer. Not only was our last outing a trip my wife and I will never forget but the fact that SBS pinned this on us and charged us thousands of dollars for their problem is a major disappointment.
