One of the hidden gems of San Jose. They have turned one of America’s worst ideas (lawns) into one of America’s best ideas (nature preserves). As a former golf course, this area created so much greenhouse gas emissions and nutrient runoff from lawn maintenance that polluted the Guadalupe River and the Bay. By restoring a natural area, it not only provides crucial ecosystem services to this riparian zone, but it also makes the land more accessible to a plethora of diverse wildlife and people from all walks of life. A stunning place to talk a casual stroll. Truly an exemplary beacon of the magnificence of human capacity amidst dark times. A diamond in the rough.

Birds and birdsong galore, natural habitat full of fragrant plants, clean walking paths all there to explore. This place is a real gem and Ill now be visiting more often and in all seasons.

It is a thin strip of land near Guadelupe Creek, which thanks to activists was converted to nature park just couple of decades ago. (Here was a small golf course which got abandoned in economic downturn). Nature and devoted people nourished it back to be a nature preserve, and doing a great job keeping it well! So much joy and peace now in there...birds and frogs are singing!

A beautiful 40 Acre Natural Area with well maintained trails. I was there in April so the trees and flowers were blooming. A lot of birds seen throughout my walk. A nice variety of local vegetation. There were a number of groups of volunteers there on this particular Saturday morning working on maintaining the area. While there are the sounds of civilization close by you can immerse yourself in your walk and enjoy this little piece of pure nature.

Lovely, quiet place to walk on dirt trails. I use a rolling walker and it was successful on most of the trails. Many interesting kinds of birds, a good place to listen to them. I never did see the hermit thrush our group leader mentioned, but I do have some good photos of a golden crowned sparrow. I was there as part of a bird language workshop hosted by San Francisco Bay Bird Observatory. My only complaint is I could not find easily any disabled parking close to the area.

Ive visited this area several times but just recently had an opportunity to take a guided tour. The area rests in an urban/residential area and adjacent to the Guadalupe River. The people conserving and restoring this area have brought in native plants and allowed existing plants to thrive. Some plant species had dwindled to almost non-existent in this area due to development. Their efforts have brought back native bird species and given homes to many reptiles and other animals, like jack rabbits, small foxes, etc. We even saw Monarchs on their migration path thanks to generous plantings of narrow-leaf milkweed. This is also a fantastic place to see plants in their natural habitat without all the pruning and watering they receive in a landscape setting. You will see many types of drought tolerant and native plants - some of the plants and trees we saw blooming had not received any water (other than rain) for over a decade!

Ulistac is a beautiful 40 acre natural area created and maintained by volunteers. Its a relaxing place to go for a stroll and to enjoy the great variety of plants and wildlife. In the Fall and Winter, migratory birds start to attract Birders. Ulistac has often had rare bird sightings. It is also a great place to see Monarchs in all stages of life as well as a diverse variety of other butterfly species. If you prefer flowers and plant life, Ulistac has no shortage of gorgeous blooms and plants. When you walk through Ulistac, you are seeing the natural California landscape in all its glory. Other wildlife you are likely to see at Ulistac depending upon what time of year you visit are: Jackrabbits, California Quail, Northern Thrasher, Woodpeckers and Northern Flickers, several species of Hawks and other Raptors, Cedar Waxwings, Robins, Black Phoebes, Warblers, Wrens and an endless list of other bird species. They also have a Wildflower Day each year which offers free tours, live music and other entertainment. Please refer to their website or their FB page for this years date.
