It is not a big museum by any means. It is mainly an exhibit of one thing that the Brown University Faculty and students are currently working on, or doing some research in. It is, however, mainly good and thoughtful. You have to keep coming back to see more. When we visited, we saw an exhibit of American Indians efforts in resisting the government effort to take their land away for new developments or for mining. It is free, it is also giving the public a place to take a break from the campus visit.
The Haffenreffer Museum of Anthropology is Brown Universitys teaching museum. The museum has a 2,000-square-foot (190 m2) gallery in Manning Hall on the university campus in Providence, Rhode Island. Its Collections Research Center is located in Bristol, Rhode Island. The Haffenreffer Museum of Anthropology is Brown University’s teaching museum. A resource across the university, it aims to inspire creative and critical thinking about culture by fostering interdisciplinary understanding of the material world. It provides opportunities for faculty and students to work with collections and the public, teaching through objects and programs in classrooms, in the CultureLab and exhibitions in Manning Hall, and at the Collections Research Center. The Museum originated with the private collection of Rudolf F. Haffenreffer, who founded the King Philip Museum in the early 20th century on the Mount Hope Grant in Bristol RI, the former headquarters of Metacom, or King Philip, a 17th-century Wampanoag sachem. The Museum became part of Brown University in 1955 and opened its gallery on the Brown campus in 2006.
The museum is tiny, its essentially just one room on the first floor of the building, so dont expect to spend much time in it. However, the exhibit on Native Indian priests and surveillance was compelling and worth seeing. There is no permanent exhibit section, so it changes all the time, but the one weve seen was well curated and presented. We spent ~45 minutes in the museum, and Id say thats the upper limit of time youd need there. But it also means its a convenient museum to fit into your itinerary.Well want to check out the museum again the next time we are in town.
Cute little museum. I like how the small size makes the museum put more effort into the exhibits which are rich and engaging. Ill be sure to return whenever there are new exhibits.
I wont call this place a museum as it is basically one gallery with a few changing exhibitions. But I am sure that they have an impressive collection, as is hinted by the artifacts on display in their visible storage. I wish that they could get a real museum-level exhibition space to show off their stuff. If that day comes, I will be among the first ones to return.
Was very nice but smaller than anticipated
Looked nice but was closed even though it was during open hours
Interesting museum at Brown University!
Not much here in Providence, I hope they open the Bristol site to the public again.
I really like this place
Nice chapel upstairs
More of a small research office with some displays than a museum
Very Epic had a Gamer time
Interesting exhibits
Its not massive, but its free and there was no queue. 15min to see some interesting exhibits in the middle of a pretty setting seems like a good time waster to me.
Closed until February 20
Great
