There is a bunch of fun to be had at this old school turned hotel. There are great options to dine and drink in many of the reimagined spaces within the school. The Courtyard had wonderful sunset views and cool vibe. We split a great Salad and some Tacos. The service was great and we could see that this area would be great for all meals. The bars have some great offerings and each have a unique feel to them.

A unique lodging option if you are visiting Portland. The rooms are basic but a good value for the price. Enjoyed breakfast in the morning. Got the breakfast burrito which was very large and enjoyable. Pay close attention to the lighting around this place. The lighting on our hallway and in our room was unique. The light fixtures in the restaurant for breakfast were varied and all quite different but they somehow worked all together from a design perspective. Very neat.

We stayed at the McMinamins Kennedy School Hotel on September 30/ October 1.The overall experience was great. The room was very clean and nice. The Hotel staff were great. Lots of outdoor seating in the Courtyard restaurant. The soaking pool was open, with markers to enable social distancing. It was wonderful to soak in the warm water. The reason I am giving 4 stars is that the bed was pretty awful. It was not comfortable at all.Other than the bed I highly recommend this hotel.

I stayed here for a week while visiting Portland for the first time in early March. I had a single room just off of the soaking pool. The room was lovely, it was nice to have the white noise of people enjoying the pool, huge windows for lots of light, tall ceilings, and an original chalkboard! It was also quiet even during busy days, I didnt have any issues with noise from my neighbours or in the halls. Wandering around the school looking at all the old photographs and art was a treat too.I ate at the Courtyard each morning and evening, Im a homebody who likes routine! Guests get a parking pass for the parking lot. The gift shop just across the way from reception was great for small things to take home. Speaking of reception the staff I encountered were all friendly and helpful. It felt like a little local spot that was popular with people in the know. It was nice to see the space used by all sorts of people for functions or families during the day. The location was great as its very close to PDX but in the depths of a mature neighbourhood. Getting downtown was quick and easy.

This is a great McMenamins location. They have numerous bars and their own brewery at this location. COVID has closed some of the bars but the main courtyard is open as well as seating inside that are spaced apart. They have a full bar as well as lots of beer and wine and the menu. The courtyard has a number of fire pits to keep you warm on cold days. There is also a hotel in site of you need a room. This is a fun place to hang out in this part of town.

How many times have I been to Kennedy School, and I havent yet written a review? Where to begin?Growing up in the PNW, Id heard the McMenamins name thrown about in conversation several times, and had even frequented their restaurant locations in Vancouver, but my first true McMenamins experience, where you are absorbed and ensconced by their vision and unique aesthetic, was here at the Kennedy School. That was when I began to comprehend and appreciate the madness of McMenamins, and started to fall in love. A hotel that was once a school, complete with soaking pool, classrooms as bedrooms, multiple bars, a restaurant, and a fabulous facility just waiting to be explored? Is it haunted? What secrets lie hidden behind closed doors and false walls? My wife and I spent a Valentines Day night here in one of the cozy classrooms, soaked for an admittedly unhealthy amount of time in the pool, and have visited each location within enough times to fill out our passport page three times over. McMenamins hotel locations never fail to deliver, but Kennedy School holds a special place in our hearts. The vibe is comforting and nostalgic, the quality of service unparalleled. And who doesnt enjoy pretending to be a delinquent student, wandering the halls of their school drinking alcohol? This is as unique and memorable a location as can be found anywhere in the Portland area. Its the hotel equivalent of the Pittock Mansion: a time-lost wonder that deserves every rave review or remark upon its stellar reputation, but it has to be experienced to be appreciated. So hike up your backpack, tie the laces of your sneakers, and prepare to get schooled!

We stayed two nights with kids in August. It was our first time traveling during the pandemic and we were reassured by the cleaning and safety measures happening across the property: everyone wore masks, hand sanitizer was freely available (made by McMenamins too), tables and chairs were sprayed after use, people were distancing, etc. We ate several meals at the courtyard restaurant and on the front lawn, which were large and tasty. We also enjoyed sampling all the beers and ciders - super refreshing because it was 90+ outside most of the time. The kids loved exploring the property and looking at all the artwork on the walls. We’d love to come back - everyone working here was so friendly and the property has so much character.

Worst possible food service Ive experienced. My wife and I have visited this place only to eat. For the past few months weve been going there about twice a month. I like their beer selection and the food is not too bad for brew pub type fare. The biggest problem that weve noticed with each visit, is that we are seated and forgotten about. When finally ordering a beer and a glass wine, we typically have to wait 20 minutes for that arrive before an order of food can be taken.Last Friday (Oct. 16) was simply the last straw and will be the last time that we go out there again. Initially being sat down at 6:50pm, our waitress finally made it to our table at 7:15pm (it wasnt even very crowded at all). When she arrived we ordered a beer and a glass of wine and food (after asking if we needed some more time to look at the menu). I said, no, 25 minutes is enough time to look at the menu. Our drinks arrived from someone else at 7:38, which was 23 minutes later. So, 48 minutes to finally get our drinks (no water was ever brought). Our food arrived at 07:50 (brought by yet another individual not our server), almost 40 minutes after ordering it. My order was completely wrong and when I pointed it out, that person looked at the ticket and said, well thats what it shows. When I said Id like the correct order he left to put it in. At that time he failed to noticed that both of our drinks were empty, yet didnt ask if we wanted a refill. When I pointed that out he said, Well, youll need to do that with your server and walked off.It had been nearly an hour now and all weve had is one beer and one glass of wine. Still waiting on my correct order. When a third different person arrived with my food order, it was not just wrong, it was completely wrong. Its like they didnt even listen. He set it down, and said well if you like you work on this while we can get the order going (again).Mind you we have been here now for an hour. Our server had NEVER once circled back to even check on us... hows the food? do you need a refill? etc. We watched her flit all around other tables, but she never came over to us once in the space of an hour. Others who had come to us to drop off my incorrect meals would not get refills or water, but kept saying that our server would have to do that. Finally, the third attempt at bringing me my correct order yielded success... after 70 minutes of being completely ignored. Still no refills offered for our drinks or water. I finally had to have the manager come to our table so we discussed the poor quality of the service. She was polite and accommodating and I will give her credit for that. She made sure that we had our refills, water and anything else we needed while we watched in curiosity as our original server still flitted around every other table in her section, except ours.Going on nearly 2 hours after arriving, half of that time waiting to be served, we had eaten and lo and behold, been given a refill of our drinks. Our original waitress was now at the table next to us receiving their tab and chatting with them. She loudly told them how pleasant they were to serve and how everyone was so great tonight.... Except for THAT one table nodding over at us. We could clearly hear her say that. My wife and I looked at each other with stunned confusion, not believing what we heard.Again, we spoke to the manager about that piece of rude behavior. There was no way we could have mistreated her, because she NEVER circled back to our table to even talk with us.This event was the worst we have ever had here, but the miserably slow service persists with all of the servers here. Every time we go we have to get up to find someone to come by and either take our order to begin with, or to please bring us a second refill on what we are drinking. Weve been served by most of the servers there and the experience is the same. This is Portland. There are tons of other options. Never coming back here again.

Service was on point and we ate out in the Courtyard which was the perfect setting to enjoy a lunch with friends. My friend ordered a beer tasting. I dont actually drink because I dont like the taste of beer but I did try a couple sips off ones she thought were interesting and they were surprisingly okay. If you are the kind of person who likes a wide selection of craft beers, this is a good place for you. I have loved all my experiences at McMenamins and plan to visit more locations. We have stayed here before and I keep hoping the service will improve, but alas mediocrity seems par for the course. Most recently we stayed for an afternoon wedding and I called in the morning to see if we could check in early. They said that they could not make any promises but they would check. Upon arrival, only an hour early, the room was not ready. Even at check in, the room was still not ready. The front desk offered only a “sorry”, not even a complimentary drink for doing absolutely nothing in the way of helping us after we paid almost 170 for the night. Also, this is during COVID, meaning we literally counted less than 10 cars in the parking lot. Frustrated and disappointed with little to no time to get to the wedding.

McMenamins Kennedy School is a grand adventure for beer enthusiasts and amateur historians alike. The facility and grounds possess a charm absent from most bar, restaurant, and lodging establishments.PROsThe staff was amazing across the board, from check in, to bartenders, to servers. All parts of the facility were clean. Our room was amazing; large room, king bed, private bathroom, and decor to compliment the schools history. We grabbed a burger at the Courtyard restaurant. I enjoyed the beer 101 package which got me TWELVE 4oz samplers of their beers. I enjoyed the Terminator the most. We also enjoyed the Honors bar and The Boiler Room. In the morning, I grabbed an americano from the gift shop espresso bar. Good tasting coffee!CONThe coffee branding. Everything in the Kennedy School is either branded McMenamins or the Kennedy School. I was excited to see this at the coffee bar. Instead I found the menu to read Espresso, Americano, Latte, Mocha. My drink was served in a cup I would expect at a Motel 6. Now, the coffee was really good, but the presentation was disappointing. Bring the coffee stand into the fold with the rest of the school!

It was crazy busy on a Sunday afternoon, but soon it cleared out and we were able to take in the whole atmosphere. The art work on the walls is so unique and beautiful.. you truly feel like you are in school again. Yes, it does smell like an old building, but you get use to it. The room itself was huge and very comfortable. Not a lot of amenities like TV/Coffee pot, etc. But again, you get use to it and they have free coffee every morning in the lobby. A very different atmosphere but these guys still hit the mark for creativity turning a historic school into a restaurant, bars and more all in 1 location (an old school). Keeping the themes of the rooms but converting them accordingly. Dont let it being a school fool you tho, the food is not cafeteria food. Its actually quite good and the service is helpful especially with the large beer and other drink selections to choose from. Prices are reasonable. There are places to explore and just kick back all over the school grounds and best yet, no hall monitors or teachers to yell at you. Even for roaming in the teachers lounge.

This is a must visit place! We loved it so much that we went back a second time on our trip to the west coast. Beautiful repurposed old school house, now a hotel, restaurant, and many unique bars incorporating the original building and its contents as much as possible. Prices at the Boiler Room bar were surprisingly low and so was dinner. It was fun to walk around the halls looking at the art of the children that attended the school back in the early 1900s.

The mcmenamins Kennedy school is one of the prestigious locations. idk how things are gonna change there now with the covid issue but its worth looking into for a great night of dining & fun.

I always enjoyed spending time at a old school that turned into a pub and restaurant. Especially spending time with my brother.
