Love McMennamins but the attitude from staff since COVID at all locations have been less than spectacular and difficult to tolerate. Baghdad was no exception and probably the worst. Never should a customer feel belittled or argued with if they ask for something and especially not when it’s adding Parmesan cheese to a pizza. Hopefully the employees with outgoing personalities come back soon. This post is approved by MFA!

Good food and service! We were bummed because the backstage bar closed for the night due to a slow night and that was where we were told to go whole we were visiting for the weekend. But, we had great company and sat outside listening to a gal that was singing/playing guitar on the corner

Great food and atmosphere. Was pretty quiet when I went. Had dinner first in the pub area then watched a movie about an hour later. Staff was friendly and fast. Would definitely visit again next time Im in Portland.

Love McMenamins, great food always a good atmosphere. The Bagdad has a great rotating beer and cider offering as well as 3 or 4 vegan food offerings.If you stop here you must take the time to visit the Backstage Bar, where you can find pool tables and pinball machines with an awesome ambiance.

Favorite place these days to go see a movie. Theater was much bigger than I was expecting but still cozy. Many sets have a table between rows so you can eat and drink comfortably while watching. If youve never been youve gotta go at least once to this historic Portland theater.

This might be the coolest theater Ive ever been to. There is 1 theater with floor seats and upper balcony seats and they are VERY COMFY. The theater is absolutely beautiful with reasonable ticket prices and themed drinks that match whatever movie they are showing. Behind the screen they have a backstage bar that is SO COOL. Huge ornate wooden bar, pool tables, space to just hang with friends. Highly reccomend.

Bagdad Theater is a unique place, even by McMenamin’s standards. Unlike most of their truly urban locations, Bagdad has multiple individual bars in addition to the standard Pub. The Backstage Bar is not to be missed and is in my top ten anywhere: The space is, as the name says, in the area that was the original backstage area for the theater, and has the soaring height preserved. Multiple levels, pocket spaces for seating and games, and the storied bar itself—a masterpiece of woodwork—all add to the mammoth space. Highly recommended!

Cool space for eating drinking smoking a cigar playing pool or watching a movie

Went and saw 1917 here with my parents. LOVED the upstairs seating and ability to have dinner delivered to your seats. Fair pricing and helpful staff. Pro tip: get there early for a show to make sure you can order your food before the movie starts.

Great spot to hang out after a movie. The location gets pretty packed but staff is quick and always attentive. If its a slow night I would recommend checking out the upstairs seating, its a bit more private but the seating is awesome.

This 5 story high celling pub tucked away behind the famed Bagdad Theatre is probably my favorite pub in Portland to hang out. Theres pool tables in every room and it has an open atmosphere that is timeless and very relaxed. This is where I go to meet good friends and shoot some pool over a good pint of beer.

Drinks were way too sweet and made with extra sweet additive, literally gave me heartburn. The hummus plates olives, pickled vegetables, and pita bread were all poorly done. The feta cheese made my gf sick to her stomach, and the service was terrible. Very disappointed in my last few visits to this chain.

Such a great venue with a localized feel! The seats are very comfortable and they will deliver food and beverage to you if you sit on the balcony. The only downside is the long lines to get food and snacks.

Some of McMenamins outlets are more of a restaurant than bar, others on larger properties have several venues worth taking in. Back Stage Bar, is a combination. Theres a Cigar store, a restaurant, and a comfy bar with 9 foot pool tables, a shuffle board, and pin ball machines. Quite refreshing when so many other drinking places have the video lottery. Well decorated, low key, quirky, and still that My Bar feel. Locals in the area find it a decent place and its a nice place for a nibble & sip on a date.

I finally had the chance to see a movie at the Bagdad, and the amazing theater did not disappoint! I sat in the front row of the balcony and although it was a little chilly (it was December), I still loved the ambiance of the huge theater in a time when the old single screens are converted into multiplexes. I even signed up for the McMenamins app for future exploring. Oh and the bathrooms were super close on the balcony level and the speakers near the stalls meant I could still know which part I was missing visually! Cant wait to go again.

My husband and I love this place. Were a big McMenamin fans anyway, and this is no exception. The theater is great. There are tables with some of the seats so you can put your food and drinks on them. Decent food, good beer and a great location on Hawthorne Street.

Incredible place to see a movie. Food is surprisingly tasty. Normally Im hesitant from theaters but they really put time and effort into the food and service at this place. Went and saw bohemian Rhapsody and it was an incredible experience. Definitely will be coming back

I always love coming here for movies. I love how big the theater is and how much room there is between the seats. Plus you can get more than candy and popcorn for concessions, including beer and liquor!Also, Ryan is amazing!!

This is a great place for a date to go and see a movie have some drinks and food or on the weekend take your kid for a matinee. most of the food is good but the is gross. usually they have new movies the kids movies tend to be old ones. I do like their Ruby beer its nice to go and just look at the cool old building even if youre not going for the movie the Bagdad used to be a brothel that I can prove addition days it has some really cool history to it check it out

Best place in town to watch a film! Super cool old building, comfy seats, tasty beer, delicious full meals. Whats not to love? Long lines for opening weekend of big movie releases, so come early for better seating choices.

One of our favorite McMenamins. We had drinks at the cigar bar, happy hour at the theater and desert at the Backstage Bar. The Backstage Bar was the highlight. Played pool. The bartender was just awesome. Fun time on a Friday Afternoon!

So much to say...unlike anything I’ve seen. Historic and beautifully preserved/redone classic theatre. I saw the latest Star Wars there and was pleasantly surprised to find out you can eat and drink from the restaurant within the theatre! You don’t feel crowded and have a bar/table in between each row to put your food/drink.The attached bar/restaurant has the most accommodating and friendly staff!I’m thinking of going back so I can sit in the lower level of the theatre...I was late so grabbed a side balcony seat.

Came here for the pool and was blown away by the atmosphere. McMenamins does such a great job of transporting you to another era. Might be my new favorite place to play pool.

My husband and I have been a few times and have had a great experience each visit. Easy to access seating for the theater. The theater also has great view/seating for handicapped personnel and their group (3 seats next to the wheelchair area). I love that we can be served dinner at the balcony seating!

Giving it 5 stars because I just love so much about this place! As a movie theater, this is a venue that allows the audience to be more with the story and with each other. Its really lovely! Plus the building is an experience in itself! I have encountered mostly wonderful employees who add to the whole experience. One critique I can offer as a current customer and former hostess and hotel front desk employee of another McMenamins establishment (a billion years ago) is to make sure the person first greeting customers gives the impression they want to be there and want you to be there too. Oddly, Ive had a couple of poor experiences with this. Overall, love the Bagdad!

Limited seating by squeezing between tables and walls is why I rated this property - on par. Still need to watch a movie here, so will re-rate again, once I have a more holistic experience. Cheers

Good place to see a movie and enjoy a good beer

My friends took me for my first time. The atmosphere was pretty friendly. The waitress recommended a really good beer and the pizza was pretty satisfying. I only wish we couldve played pool but they were checked out by the same people for most of the night. Overall a pleasant place.

Crowded. Loud. If its your thing then its great. Not my thing standing for a while in line at a bar with no place to sit. Go on a weekday if you hope to have a conversation with your group. Plenty of shuffleboard. Two pool tables.

I used to go all of the time, but I havent been here in years. So this was the first time Ive been since the remodel/upgrade. Loved the new seats. The food line was long as usual, but moved really quickly. Staff was helpful and accommodated my special order. I was here to see Black Panther so it was packed. Sat all the way in the back of the balcony (you have to sit upstairs if you want your food delivered). Still good seats. Overall, very happy with the experience.

It’s a Mcmenamins, so the food and drink selection is going to be amazing! This one has outdoor seating right on Hawthorne, which is awesome. Our server, Spencer, was the best! So kind and genuine. We really enjoyed him.

Dependable McMenamins fare in another unusual venue. On the whole you can depend on McMenamins to offer a quality atmosphere to relax and have a good time. The new back bar that they saved from the infamous downtown Portland Lotus Cardroom is amazing. Along with drinks & food you can drop in and pool, shuffleboard, and other games. Its also just around the corner from The Bagdad Theater.

We went there today for the first time. We received a gift card. We chose this location because it was near our house, and had good Google reviews, and the online menu looked good for lunch. I had the year of the dragon burger with tots. It was the best burger I have had in a long time. We also had Scooby snacks and fries and a Shirley Temple. And lastly a chocolate shake. The staff were friendly and helpful. We sat outside, which was nice. We are definitely going again. They have a good happy hour menu.

Mcminnamins has the best cajun tots

Very nice theater. They transformed what was once a live performance theater into a movie theater. In typical McMenamins fashion they decorate every nook and cranny with ornate paintings that ribbon around the walls and fill open spaces. The concession has everything you would expect from a theater but including pizza, beer, wine and a full menu of meals that are delivered to your seat. However, if you order from the menu you must sit on the top level to be served.Like a live performance theater, there is balcony seating but I think sitting on the lower level is better for viewing. I am particular about how I see movies but you can see just fine from the balcony seats—which most people seem to prefer. The seats are very comfy and some include a table in between rows to set your food and drink.One of the best places to see a movie in Portland!

Went to see Thor Ragnarok here. Super cool space, you can order off the menu at the concession counter but they only bring you the food to the upper balcony. If you sit in the lower section, you can only take in popcorn, candy and slices of pizza from the concessions stand. As with the backstage bar, the servers were a little unfriendly but all in all a good experience.

Both times Ive been here on a late weekend night to play some pool it has not been busy. Not sure why though because this place is gorgeous! It is a hidden room that sits behind the Bagdad Theaters screen. The bar itself was salvaged from the Lotus Cardroom in Portland and is around 130 years old. Everything in this place is a spectacle for the eyes: The chandeliers, the bar, the ceiling, and the 20x20 mural are all amazing. This is my favorite place to play pool and a hidden gem you have to see for yourself.

I ate in the restaurant portion of the building, before seeing a movie. The food and service there were great! We got A HUGE bowl of delicious tater tots with our meal. After eating, we waited in the front to be allowed into the movie theater. 2 of my party went ahead to the theater. Me and another member of the party waited at confession. There was a couple being helped and the two of us. When another employee appeared behind the concession, he told us to move back and stand behind the line, THEN offered to help us at the counter. I was rather confused as to why he would ask the only two people in line to go backwards and then move forward.... Instead of just offering to help us... The rest of the interaction with this individual was unpleasant. The theater that the movie was in, was comfortable and beautiful. I will gladly see another film there.

Had a blast for the preview of Star Wars the Return of Skywalker. What a classy retro venue! Worth it for the historical value and architecture alone.

We have never been here before. This is a beautiful old theater. Im ok with them only showing 1 movie at a time as i rarely watch movies in theaters. I love being able to order food and adult beverages during a movie. Scoobie snacks and tots were filling. Harry Potter themed drinks for Fantastic Beasts was fun. We will frequent this establishment every time we come to Portland.

We had 4 tickets for Star Wars on a sold out Sunday and my partner got sick. They gladly rescheduled it to another day without issue. Extremely classy customer service that was above and beyond and appreciated.

My favorite place to see movies - especially LONG films. Buy yourself a bottle of wine (yes, you can absolutely buy wine by the bottle), order some food if youre so inclined, find a nice spot upstairs with a table - sit towards your right side, if you want to be closer to the restrooms - and enjoy the flick.

I have frequented this Mcmenamins for about six months now and I always find this to be a good stop if youre in the area. I have seen several changes in the staff so service has varied quite often. The atmosphere is what always gets me!

If you enjoy eating a burger/slice of pizza and having a drink while you watch a movie, Bagdad is the theater for you. The seats are comfortable enough, and the surrounding Hawthorn area is a great place to hang out with friends before/after the movie.

Very cool area with a large bar and a few games. The extremely large, vaulted ceiling is a cool sight to see in a bar like this, and theyve done a good job of theming it. Bar staff was fast to take our orders and equally as fast with delivering them. They were knowledgeable and gave good suggestions to people who didnt know what they wanted. The full sized shuffle board is a must-try while youre here!

I always love going to the Bagdad for big blockbuster releases. Theres plenty of food options (if you sit in the balcony) and plenty of drinks to choose from to enjoy the flick. I wish theyd adopt reserved seating, though. With limited space inside, lining up for movies to get a good spot means standing out (often in the wet and cold). Still, you can make an argument for the authenticity of the old ways of going to the movies.

Great food, cool atmosphere but limited seating

This is a great place to go to see new movies and enjoy good food. You can order right after getting your tickets and they will bring the food to you in the theater when its ready. Theyve always gotten my order right, and it is still nice and warm.If you get there early, look up and admire the original architecture and chandeliers, there for the last 90 years. But dont worry, the seats have been replaced recently and are quite comfortable.

Love this theater. I grew up watching movies here back in the 80s before McMenamins bought it. Love how McMenamins has renovated it, and is operating it. It is not the most state of the art theater, but it is awesome how you can order food and eat within the theater.
