I absolutely loved this place and I can’t wait to go back. The technology that is used to education people while walking through the park is pretty high tech. I like how you are able to tour the inside of the historic buildings on the property and the trails in the back are beautiful! Make sure to wear comfortable shoes. The best part of my experience with my family was the riffle demonstration. The gentleman who lead this was dressed in period clothing. He described with props what it was like to be a soldier and all the challenges they faced. He got my boys involved by having them demonstrated with wooden rifles the 9 steps it takes to fire an actual rifle. Please go visit this place! Your missing out for sure if you haven’t!

I was genuinely overwhelmed at how wonderful this place is. I came, ostensibly, simply for a hike along the paths, but I went through the museum and was very impressed by the quality, sophistication and wealth of both knowledge and insight the museum presented. Listening to some of the first hand accounts from both Union and Confederate soldiers, one felt their humanity. Ill confess, my eyes even teared up at some of the commentary. The displays were thoughtfully arranged into categories focusing on different aspects of life in the field. For example, camp life is broken down into topics such as food, pastimes, hospital care, etc. Very thorough and brilliantly executed. And hats off to whoever designed the audio guide. I also have to comment on the very well done film at the center located outside the main museum. And then there was the staff. They were extremely helpful and friendly. I came expecting to spend a couple of hours, but I got caught up in conversation and exploration and ended up spending five hours.

This place is great! Very well put together historical grounds and information centers. We came on a weekday in the afternoon and it wasnt busy at all. There are guided portions of the entire facility, or you can get an audio guide from the main building at the entrance. We elected to use the audio tour guide device and went throughout the grounds leaning as we went. The Tudor plantation was so neat, live animals and walk through out buildings immersed us in the time period. The house was set up as the troops would have had it when it was used as a headquarters. The slave houses on the grounds were very eye opening to the living quarters for a slave at a plantation. The battlefield area was set up as a replica of how battle positions and fields of fire would have been established. At the field camp, we were given a demonstration and and information on daily life for a soldier living in the field by two reenactors. Both did an excellent job answering questions and gave a demonstration of the rifles that would have been carried in battle. Beyond the recreated encampment, actual Confederate earthworks can be seen still intact. We spent several hours here and didnt even see everything. If someone wanted to take in all the available information at the Pamplin Historical Park, I would at least allow for 4-5 hours, but you could easily spend more time than that. 5 stars for sure.

The indoor main museum was very interesting! Really enjoyed the immersive feel exhibit of facing Confederates firing at you...complete with sound and rush of air of the bullets and artillery! Very nice outdoor exhibits of Antebellum South and the Petersburg Defensive Earthworks. Hiking trails are available. Note that there is a fee to enter the museum. Discounts for AAA and military.

Our family drove an hour and a half to see this park. We tried to visit Saturday at 1000,9/12/20. The website indicated these were operating hours. The GPS led us to a dead end road as the entrance to the park. There were multiple park entrances to the facility which were all gated closed. There were no signs to indicate why the park was closed. There is nothing posted on their website or business phone. No one is answering the business phone to even speak with. This was a real shame.

Petersburg is a fantastic place to visit and it can be confusing which sites to see with all the parks and museums. I would strongly recommend Pamplin Historical Park (also the National Museum of the Civil War Soldier) as your first stop!! It has everything for all ages! The indoor exhibit walks you through life size exhibits of what it was like to be a Soldier during the Civil War (Camp life, etc). That exhibit alone has got to be one of the best I have ever seen. Then you go outside and visit the plantation with the plantation house (half of the house represents plantation life and the other half represents the Confederate occupation during the Civil War) along with the slave quarters. One of the slave quarters has a video presentation that represents the perspectives of the slave owner, his wife, and the slaves themselves; reality on the ground! Then you walk a little further and they still have part of the original battle-site, along with a theater that presents a one hour film. The price may be a little steep for a large family, but it is privately owned, has a friendly staff and is one of the best museums on the Civil War!! You definitely get your monies worth here!!!

What a great place. The Pamplins have really given back. This is a day trip worth taking even for folks in Northern VA. We did not get to do the outdoor walk due to rain but we will come back. The museum is a wealth of knowledge both inside and out with its interactive exhibits. The staff is friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. However, the best part of this park is getting to walk the trails to see the entrenchments and other historical sites up close where I can then close my eyes and try to imagine for just a moment what transpired all along the lines, in the woods and around the surrounding area. Its as close as one can get to actually being there. Also, the parks dedication to working with teachers and educating young people is superb!

I actually learned some stuff here too, which is very cool. I love how they focus on the history, especially the history of the common soldier, rather than ideals in Washington policy or race as many other museums tend to do.
