This is a fairly small park, consisting of one main trail of about 1.5 miles up a hill alongside a creek, and ends at the Merritt College parking lot. There are a couple of other trails leading to other residential areas. It apparently was paved a long time ago. There is still some eroding asphalt left over from a time passed. At both ends of the trail you can find a guide (pictured in my accompanying photo) that describes various native plants along the trail and how they were used by the Oholone people. Its a nice place to bring dogs.Like a lot of trails in the area there seems to be an epidemic of people leaving their bags of dog poop all over the place. Please, dont leave bags of poop on the trail. Nobody wants to see your bag of dog poop.

A great walk for anyone, with or without dogs. Gentle, mostly level trail with offshoots that lead up into the hills of Oakland where some of the most spectacular California Oaks can be enjoyed. Creek runs year round.

A hidden gem in the heart of the urban hills.An easy trial with an amazing view. A small creek runs along the semi-paved road with limited parking space.I got so excited seeing spreads of the Golden Poppy on the hill side and hearing the stream/creek and bird chirping on the opposite side. What a lovely weekend!I saw a big group of people on a guided tour for bird watching. I think its with the EB Regional Park, please comment if you have info or the event link :-)I walked my dog and we met many other friendly dogs in our 20 minute brief hike. The trial stretches further but we needed to get going.Since the road is uneven, I would recommend wearing shoes with good ankle support. Theyre my lifesaver since I occasionally fall even on a flat smooth road.

Open quiet dry. Very few on the trail. Not as scenic this time of year but hx of area as original cattle ranch evident.

Short, pleasant hike through a grove of mainly oak trees. Nothing special but nice.

Just below Merritt College, this hike is a journey through, what feels like, an isolated temperate canyon land. The silence, fostered be the forested walls of the ravine, is pressing yet comforting. While there are many fellow hikers on weekends, it is fairly vacant during the week. If you persist and make it to the top you will be rewarded with a spectacular view of the East Bay. Several steep inclines, not handicap accessible.

Google does not get you there. Entry thro Canyon Oaks Dr. Parking available. Gentle slope uphill to Merritt College.

This is a very beautiful trail with a creek running along it and really shaded. It is primarily a dog walking trail. I am a dog walker and I have a group of six, and mostly every dog walker has a group of six and you will encounter two to three of us on the trail. (So a lot of dogs) If you are scared of dogs I do not recommend this trail. The only downside is irresponsible dog owners or walkers that do not pick up poop.

A quiet hike through the trees, this trail it almost never crowded.

Gorgeous just alot of pro dog walkers. Best early morning but watch out for bob cats and have good voice command if your dog(s).

One main trail with a small spur that goes up to a neighborhood. Dense coastal live oak forest with a prescriptive layer of poison oak. Popular with dog walkers and a few joggers although the trail can be rather steep for running in areas.

Shortish hike w my dog off leash and legal. Mostly oak and laurel woodland. Parking and trash cans at both ends. No other facilities. Stay on the trail and out of the creek as its a restoration area. Please pack out your dogs poop. I dont understand people who bag it and leave it on the trail....Thanks

Great well paved paths! They are wide enough for hikers and bikers on the same trail. Beautiful nature walk that is kid friendly. We went as a family and my kids (ages 7 & 4) didn’t find the trail to be too strenuous. We were able to easily find walking sticks for each of us to assist along the way, but it was more for fun, not required!

Great open trail that branches off. Parking at trail head. Poop bags provided. Creek runs along trail most of the way. Be careful of coyotes and ticks if you bring your dog.

We walked the main trail to the top and back. Its about a mile and a quarter each way with an incline most of the way to the top. Is it strenuous? Not for people that are active and their bodies are acclimated to hiking. For those who are not, yes it can be a little strenuous. The good news is its short.

My favorite running trail with about an 800 foot elevation change between the entrances (Skyline to Campus). Plus my dog can be off leash here. Its a shaded canyon with a stream running through it. I have seen coyotes, foxes, rabbits, skunks and mountain lions.

Hidden gem, especially if youre looking for an off-leash dog trail. If you start at the trailhead near the apartment complex, staying on the main trail will eventually take you to the community college. Its mostly flat until you hit a sorta steep incline towards the end. There are alternative routes you can take about halfway down the main trail. For a steep but short route, go right. Its more exposed and theres a bench with a nice view along the way. Take a left if you want a longer route up some switchback trails (mostly moderate inclines after a steep start). Both end in residential areas. Wherever you go, watch out for poison oak. Small dog owners should be aware there are coyotes in the area, although Ive never crossed paths with one myself.

Nice little hike, good place to take dogs

What a gem hidden on the Oakland hills. This is an extremely nice walk ideal to spend half of an afternoon with kids and their families. It was raining when we visited but the canopy of the trees protected us. No problema at all, very little mud. This also means there is a lot of shade and protection when its sunny and hot. It takes about two hours to go back and forth with very slow kids.

Beautiful little slice of heaven in the Oakland Foothills, favorite doggo spot. Short walk (1.5 mi each way) makes for the perfect weekend hike

This park is as simple as hiking with a dog in the Bay Area gets. I never see bikes (Usually there early-mid morning). Off leash allowed. A bit over 2 miles round trip on the main trail.

Dogs had fun in this place. Well be back once more to explore it without dogs...

Great workout, excellent place for friendly dogs. No restroom but a little over an hour trail straightaway... Best to park on the bottom but coming up the hill as your final will test your cardio.... Bring enough water

Leona Canyon is a great place for a lot of incline but is a short workout from end to end. Its nestled in the Oakland hills, near Keller Avenue. There is designated park parking among the apartment parking lot closest to the park entrance.

Love Leona Canyon! Easy hike, creek, sun and shade...a great place for hike with my dog..and great mellow hike for me! I highly recommend it!!!

Off leash trail through some beautiful woods next to a small creek. Moderately flat for the first half mile from the south entrance then it goes sharply uphill. There are only a few unsheltered sections; its mostly shady. Wear shoes with firm soles though there are a lot of rocks in the path.

I love this little hike. It follows a creek, it is dog friendly, has plenty of shade, has different paths to take, and benches with wonderful views.

Ideal place for a hike

Parking is not what Google map pin point.Access is available from a staging area on Campus Drive off Keller Avenue east of Interstate 580 in Oakland, and from Merritt College. The college parking lot charges a fee and is closed on weekends. There are no developed facilities.
