I love the Ogden museum of southern art! I visit here all the time whenever I come to New Orleans. They are a decent size museum- not too small but not too big and overwhelming. Their focus on southern art is appreciated as it is clearly underrated. all the art labels are super informative and thoughtful and includes a silhouette of the state the artist is based in which is pretty cool.Barbara D came along with me to see the recent self taught artist exhibition and it is incredible!!! “100% must see!” We actually bought two catalogues on this subject before we left.A must visit locally conscious and critical experience 5 stars all the way! ️️️️️Also this location takes the AAM membership card for two

This is a great museum. Its 5 stories tall. Louisiana residents can get in for free on Thursdays. Kids are allowed. Lots of different exhibitions to see. Wide range of different styles of art. Very talented artists. The museum itself is very beautiful. It is modern architecture. Very well kept and maintained. Very clean. There is a gift shop on the 1st floor. They frequently have music artists perform there as well.

What better way to spend an evening than listening to music while viewing world class art? Many exhibits are often worth a second viewing in the following days. Southern art is our culture and this museum provides rare glimpses into our lives.

Wonderful!!! Wonderful place to learn about fine historic art, but specifically art that is created by southern folk. Its pretty cool coming from a New Yorker. I went here to visit as I was in the area to celebrate New Years and indulge in some local culture. Staff was a little antisocial / not used to people who arent locals / maybe having an off day, but the collections featured were great to look at. As a photographer I really got a lot out of the William Christenberry exhibition. If youre in New Orleans I strongly recommended going here if youre an art person.

Very small museum and I didn’t love most of the art on display. I thought $13 was overpriced. $5 would have been more appropriate for the 45 minutes I spent seeing all the artwork. Free would have warranted 4 stars to see some local southern artists - most of whom I never heard of before.

Really well curated museum around the theme of the south and southern art. The exhibits were very good, and the permanent collection is also interesting. The one thing I will critique is that it is quite small. Probably 1-2 hours is more than enough time to visit. However, it was really interesting to see a museum focused on southern art, and I would recommend it for a visit.

This museum was much more interesting than we were expecting. We had a tour guide for part of our time and spent a long time browsing on our own. It included some older traditional oil paintings by well known artists, but there were also interesting and unique newer pieces in various mediums that made important statements to the viewer. There was also a childrens art section, showing many childrens individual take on a theme. This museum also has evening jazz concerts in the foyer. We really enjoyed the Sabertooth Swing band inside on a rainy night. Drinks and place to dance were available. It was nice to hear the music in the concert rather than pub setting.

A really challenging art museum. Im glad they told me to start at the top because the current visionary art exhibit+the self-taught exhibit is a lot to take in and it was a relief to get to the more conventional stuff lower down. I never would have had the energy to engage going the other way. This museum was the highlight of my trip.

My sister and I took advantage of the free admission for Louisiana residents (Thursdays until 5pm, courtesy of the Helis Foundation) and visited the Ogden - it was everything we expected and more! The friendly staff was proactive and knowledgeable! The William Chistenberry exhibit was beautiful - and, of course, we really enjoyed seeing our local artist in the Level Collective Exhibit (u may want to plan a few extra minutes to see/hear videos compiled of various stories about different peoples experiences of injustice in trying to maneuver our justice system). We really enjoyed the entire museum!Visiting NOMA next!

I loved the Ogden. There was one issue in that after I paid the admission, I was told that the exhibit on one floor was removed (which makes for a quarter of the museum being gone). That was made up for the quality of the art competition exhibit on the top floor. It inspired me to go do my own set of photos around the city for a display at home.

I felt a little let down on the amount of displayed work in this five story building. Regrettably only two of these floors are viewable. The museum consists mostly of landscapes and the abstract with portraits and surrealism almost all works are from the 20th century.

Review №63

The museum is decent but a little lackluster. If you are staying a while in NOLA, worth a pit stop but definitely not a top priority. Also - interestingly, the top floor that is for women artists only consists only of donated pieces by the artists, bar one piece the collection purchased - which happens to be the one male piece on the floor. Whats up with that?

I love art and museums. Hummmm this was a bit odd. There were 3 floors of art. Two were very interesting and the top floor was art that was so primative as to resemble a kindergarten classroom. The staff were pleasent and helpful. They could really use an audio tour or at least something about the paintings. Most were just titled. However its pretty rare to see Southern art and a couple of the larger pieces were extraordinary.

Total letdown honestly. Im no art student, but the photography exhibit was very poor, none of the collections told any resemblance of a story, and I learned nothing about Southern art and culture, which I was really excited about. Some pieces were enjoyable, but would not go back or recommend. Go to the Jazz or Pharmacy Museums instead.

First off there is AC in August when the doorman opens the door and sweeps you in! Woosh! Ahhh! Its White Linen Night so free entry! (On Thursday, too, I think! You can double check before you go.) A DJ and a bar greet you in the multi story foyer! Beautiful art. Some of it, the Magnolia Mural by Courtney Egan is interactive! Secretly bring a small spritzer of magnolia fragrance, a pocket full of half a dozen electric votives to scatter around the perimeter of the room, some preselected favorite romantic music on the old cell, your favorite videographer buddy, and someone significant. Hold your hand high up in the air and ask them to dance, propose or get married! Its that kind of exhibit. 3rd floor back corner! Post your videos! Tag me!
