This gallery is about twenty feet from one of three historic spots for busking (street music) in New Orleans.+This gallery calls the police on busking musicians frequently, claiming that the “gutterpunk noise” interferes with their sales of “$30,000” paintings. This is making this spot nearly impossible for musicians to use.+This gallery prominently displays paintings of street musicians in their front window.=this gallery and its proprietors have earned a reputation among New Orleans musicians as gentrification profiteers, who make money selling a whitewashed version of the very culture they are actively strangling.Take a fraction of the money you’d spend on a painting there and buy recordings and artwork from musicians and artists in the clubs and streets of New Orleans. You don’t have to be a part of the problem.

My friend and I just had an incredibly negative experience here. We are two young, twenty-something women, very clearly here fortourism. As soon as we walked into the gallery, the manager (we believe) began following and watching us as we viewed the art. We both enjoyed the GECA art, as well as the set of painting by SpongeBob creator Tom White. As my friend went to point at his description, the manager, still in the doorway of the room we were in (though there were three customers who had just walked in the front), said do not touch the art or the frames. My friend apologized and said she hadnt, put her other hand behind her back and leaned away, to make it clear she had no ill intentions. She kept her pointing finger at least 8 inches away from the description and painting below. She gestured to me and tried to point again and the manager, still watching, said Now were going to ask you to leave. Our sister gallery down the street has your pictures. Dont even try. We didnt say anything and left quietly, not feeling it was worth the argument. The whole experience felt very aggressive and discriminatory. It felt like this manager was waiting to kick us out of the gallery. She never stopped watching us despite other people being in the store. We were quiet the whole time, very respectful, and gave her no reason to believe we were going to be inappropriate in any way.
