My daughter and I came her to view the art and spend time together just her and I. I am in construction and have been working a ton and this was such a lovely visit for her and I to just take in all the beauty and history and being as it is currently appointment only it was peaceful and quiet. It was not over crowded and we did not have to be shoulder to shoulder with others. This place is amazing and my 11 year old daughter and I love to visit. If you have never been before, dont miss out on the Minneapolis Downtown Skyline views from the second floor. This was my daughters fathers favorite place in the whole museum and her and I sat for a bit thinking of him and taking in the view. There is art from many periods and all styles and our favorite is all of the Asian art. Its a museum. Its beautiful. The architecture alone is very impressive. If you appreciate this sort of thing you cannot bypass the MIA.

AMAZING !!!! this place was so cool !!! You need so much time to see and explore this place, all the little place cards to read, everywhere you turn is more stunning stuff, korean, japan, Egypt, Greek, british, stunning paintings!! I could only go so fast trying to take photos and experience it all. The group of us 4 got in for free which was super cool. Id highly reccomend this place to anyone !

Totally agree with the reviews about the Chinese artifacts. I have been to the China National Museum and I liked the MIA collection better. the explanations were informative and the rooms were authentic. Loved the Frank Lloyd Wright exhibit. I live near NYC and Philly so for me the impressionist collection was not as impressive, but I did like the Georgia OKeefe called City Lights (I believe). The museum is well worth the time. My 28 year old son enjoyed it also.

This is a must see museum for an avid or fledging art lover. Took 3 hours to tour the 3 floors of pieces but couldve spent longer. The Asian pieces aloneare some of the best on U.S. soil. The inclusion of a real Japanese gate that stands 10ft and you can walk through it, was my sons favorite. Almost every period of history is covered in their vast collection of paintings and pottery.

A fantastic collection of artwork and historical artifacts. Best way to enjoy the museum is in multiple trips, as the place is huge! Quiet, relaxing, and relatively kid friendly. The staff are doing their best during this pandemic, and I know that it’s stressful with how many people they probably get who don’t follow rules/state mandates. Regardless, we had some questions about certain pieces, and the staff were quite rude and reluctant to talk with us. It was a little jarring. Other than that, we thoroughly enjoyed our experience!

Really big collection , some of very big name painters. I wish they had a structure to follow though. We saw some sections very intensely and skimmed through others and took about 3.5 hours for about 80% of the museum. Dont miss the 4000year old pottery on the top floor on the right (starting at the top near the stair above the cafe) ; the big chinese - budhist era doorway - you cant miss it ; the tea rooms from china and japan ; the EUean modern art collections , the jewerlery box with inlaid gems ; well preserved mosaics!!

MIA is one of my FAVORITE places to go in Minneapolis. I go there so much, Im now a free/donor member and will be upgrading to a better membership eventually. They have both permanent exhibits/galleries and a couple galleries that are always changing...so it keeps going there so often fresh and fun. They have an amazing gift shop and cafe as well. The staff is very kind, professional, and knowledgeable. MIA never lets me down and I always leave there more calm and happy than I felt when I arrived. MIA is great for groups of children, kids school trips, family visits, art students, solo visits, and even dates. Admission is free/donation based. Parking can be hard to find on the weekends, but during the week its usually less busy and easier to find street parking. They also have a parking ramp and a parking lot that you can pay for, if thats more convenient. I highly suggest checking this place out if you get the opportunity!

Upon walking into the sleek, modern museum you can see a beautiful little garden through the glass. The building is expansive and very well designed. Every exhibit is placed specifically and maps are given when you walk in. With both coat check, maps, and helpful workers you can find any exhibit you want. You can also just browse and spend hours experiencing world class art. My favorite floor is the top one, where a painting hangs that is absolutely massive. It is modern and features two young men. Not sure if it is still there, as the museum keeps exhibits fresh and exciting. Spend some time at the cafe and sip on some coffee. There are more activities and rooms than just the museum itself. Special exhibition visits, Art In Bloom visits, educational visits... you get the idea. Today we renewed our membership and went to see the special exhibit Hearts of Our People Native Women Artists. It was great. We took time to really absorb the collection. Much of the exhibit gives us a look at the intricate and colorful designs of clothing and utilitarian objects. Free museum?! Doing timed tickets during covid?! You organized, thoughtful beautiful people. Incredible variety of art. Really appreciated the layout and the flow between the different exhibits. You know how you can get lost in a museum and like ugh, have I been over there yet? That will not happen. The curation is also really good because the collection isnt overwhelming but its really well displayed. The one critique I would have is that in the Asian art section next to the jadeite dishes theres nephrite dishes and small sculptures and its a bit difficult to see the extreme detail in these pieces because they are white and probably really hard to light to see the detail.

It is always clean and well organized, and Ive never seen it be uncomfortably busy, even on the weekends. The MIA is doing an excellent job with outreach in the Native community. I was so moved by their current Exhibition, Hearts of Our People. Its been long due to have such an amazing showcase of both historic and contemporary native women artists, contextualized on their own terms. More of this please!I am also a huge fan of the Art in Bloom event that happens annually. Beautiful flower arrangements, paired with beautiful works of art. Fantastic! The Childrens Theater does great shows- but my complaint is that they dont do a good job with outreach into the lower income community. Ticket prices are high, and that limits access to the arts by those who need it most.Im very happy as an artist with the ability to walk into the MIA and see pivotal, historic works for free!
