Humble and incredible museum experience at the corner of College and McLemore in Memphis, Tennessee. If youve not heard of that intersection, youll know all about it after youve toured this landmark.Stax Records launched the careers of some of the most talented and important soul, R&B and gospel music performers of the 60s and early 70s.I wont give away any of the surprises, but if youre a music fan, prepare to be impressed. I guarantee you will not be disappointed. If you like to see and read everything like I do, youll want to allow for about two hours.Moderately priced, super friendly staff, and immaculately clean and well maintained exhibits.Dont forget to kick in a few extra bucks for the foundation next door, which helps kids that come from some pretty difficult situations to learn and master their musical expression. In some cases music may be the only hope for some of those kids to lift themselves to their dreams. Especially when the musical arts have been all but eliminated in the public schools. If youre in Memphis, this is a MUST SEE! Have fun!

You start out watching a film and then exit out behind the walls of all the amazing walls of the beginning of music life back then. I love the soul train floor part because growing up sitting on the floor glued to the tv bring back memories. Great place to visit in Memphis

I really enjoyed the Stax Museum!! The film you watch at the beginning is informative and the music in it makes you want to sing along and get your groove on. The part you walk through after the film is so cool. You have to check out the Cadillac!I hope you guys go and check out the museum. My nephew and I thoroughly enjoyed it and I think you will, too.

The story of collaboration and feeling of family and the GREAT music made in that studio is 2nd to none. They are still passing on that sense of family to the students involved in their musical programs. My favorite attraction in Memphis. Also the staff went above and beyond for us. Well done Stax.

This is a small but very detailed museum. Learning about the boundary-breaking work of black and white artists, producers, engineers, and owners was incredible. One of the most incredible parts was leaning about the decline and end of Stax records and of the business and name. Its phenomenal that its been restored to inform the next generation of what Memphis has helped do for the world.

For me, this was worth the $13 just to see Isaac Hayes special edition Cadillac El Dorado. Seriously...thats all it took. As a bonus, you get to walk through the studio where the likes of Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett, Booker T. & the MGs, Sam and Dave,, and others recorded. Its enough to make your hair stand on end if you love soul music at all.

As a huge fan of Northern Soul, this was near the top of my things to do in Memphis. Large parking lot at rear of premises and a very reasonable entry fee of around $13. It did not disappoint. Excellent displays of stage outfits and the vinyl wall of fame and Isaac Hayes gold plated Cadillac were spectacular. Loved this place and bought some great items from the store.

I was so impressed with the history of Stax recording studio, the amazing history of the artists and impact of this wonderful place, I can’t imagine what the world would of been without the influences that were developed here. It was a special place and it is sad that it didn’t last, it’s legacy lives on with the Stax Charter school, spreading out more music and developing new young people

Amazing! I think most would spend less than hour here, bit I spent 4 hours. I could have spent more. Overall a decent way to waste an afternoon. The museum starts strong, but quickly loosed its luster. Dont get me wrong it has great material to work with and good history, but the museum as a museum is disjointed and self contradictory. It lacks a consistent narrative and is sometimes self contradictory. If you can read through the poor presentation, there is good history here.

The soul music history in Memphis and the influence of Stax records is worth checking out when you are in Memphis. The videos and exhibits shed light on the incredible contributions of so many classic soul artists. If you love vinyl records like me, youll appreciate the walls of 45s and the gems for sale in the store. Maybe youve never heard of or thought about Stax record label, but trust me youve heard their music and know many of the artists, unless youve never listened to any soul music. Cuts upon cuts, the oldies you cant help bit sing along to when they begin to play. I had to include a pic of Isaac Hayes caddy... yep, the car and the music are golden!

Great museum! There is a 20 minute movie, and the museum part will take about 45 minutes to 2 hours (if you want to read everything). IMO, much better than Sun Records in that they have more artifacts and a better museum, but the studio part could have been done up more like Sun to tell more of the who-did-what-where in the studio. Visited here as we had bought The Backstage Pass which also included Sun Studios, Rock N Soul Museum and Graceland. Also included is free round trip transportation to Elviss home. Unfortunately the bus was in for repair and for the trip to Graceland we had to use taxis paid for out of our own pocket. The price of the pass is $84. Although soul music isnt our thing our party of four enjoyed our time here. It starts with a video and then you are allowed to see everything at your own pace. It all finishes in the obligatory gift shop were there were some unique items. Staff here were super friendly and even phoned for our onward transportation.
