A very nice space, nice theater, nice location. A bit disorganized after a computer hack, but they managed it well.

This regional theater presents very good productions of plays of Shakespeare and some of his contemporaries. Their stage is unfortunately a bit small, so they have to be very creative in their set design. Usually, they do a great job with the space available. There is plenty of free parking just outside of the theater. It is located on the campus of Drew University. It seems to me that every seat in the theater has excellent sight lines. I normally choose to sit in the balcony and every seat there has a great view. There are no pillars to dodge.Heres a hint: for discount prices, go the first week during previews. The ticket price is less than half. AND, order your tickets early because they sell out.

Pleased to add my voice to the many people who love this theatre. All has been said, but can be reemphasized: wonderful small theatre; dedicated company and professional staff; well-chosen plays ingeniously adapted in details to the current audience; gorgeous sets, and spectacular acting. They put on a series of 6-7 plays each year with about a three-week run per play. Of these, about two each year are Shakespeares. These are thoughtfully made more accessible to all in the audience by visual cues, to better the chance that if you dont catch the phrase, you understand the thought. Been a subscriber for fifteen years, all with our son, who is now 21.

Wonderful theater located on the campus of Drew University in Madison New Jersey. Plays from Shakespeare are their main focus but not their only productions. Seating for up to 300. Intimate feel and allows you to feel as if you are part of the play. You should try to go if you have the opportunity.

Outstanding production in a truly intimate setting. Costumes, sets, interpretation, and staging of The Winters Tale were all terrific. I was especially moved by the acting -- I felt like I was watching Shakespearean actors rather than actors performing Shakespeare.

I went to the Kirby theater to see tartuffe. It was a great play. I have a subscription and there are very few plays that disappoint. The theater itself is nice. Its intimate. there are only 10 rows of seats so there isnt a bad seat in the house. You should definitely check it out

Shakespeare Theater takes on a variety of projects from traditional portrayals to more modern adaptations.STNJ has made a variety of plays and playwrights accessible to me after years of hearing about them. The quality of the show has always been excellent and the cast has always been phenomenal.Heres a little tip if you want to see a lot of shows but you want to be smart with $$: Go to one of the first 2 or 3 nights of a plays run. These shows are full dress rehearsals of the show and allow the actors to see what works in front of an audience. As a result, tickets are $10 instead of $50. I have never been let down by seeing these early shows.

I have been coming to these theater productions for more than twenty years with five other friends. Only some of the plays are by Shakespeare. All of the plays are carefully directed with an attention to detail. The sets enhance every production and I would come for the sets alone. The majority of the actors are equity often coming out from New York.I have another theater series in New York but I drive from Bergen County to Madison and would give up my New York series before I would ever give this up. Its a small theater with no bad seats. The Tuesday night after play discussion puts the play and theater in context.

I just saw Much Ado About Nothing. I thought the theater and the whole production were great and I would love to go back soon for another play. The theater is a bit smaller than the online seating chart led me to believe, so I think just about any seat is good. Whether you know a lot or a little about Shakespeares works I think youll have a good time.

You might think Ben Jonson doesn’t have anything to say to modern audiences, and that whatever he did have to say, he said 400 years ago. In the Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey’s production of his “satiric masterwork” The Alchemist, the audience finds, as director Bonnie Monte says, “the one thing that hasn’t changed is human nature.” In a talkback after the show, a director who’d put on this rarely-produced play free outdoors in Manhattan in 2008 said it made an almost painfully apt commentary on 21st century greed in the midst of the economic crisis.Every variation on wanting something for nothing is displayed by the Londoners who visit the den of the Alchemist and his confederates. The marks are blinded by their fantasies, their lust for gold and, while they’re at it, the favors of one particularly comely young widow. We laugh out loud at their ridiculous and sybaritic pretensions, mainly because we recognize them. For this production, much of the language was updated so modern ears could catch the lightning-fast and witty dialog, and the whole play was cut in about half by eliminating secondary characters and scenes, for modern attention spans (and bladders). It’s still two and a half fast-moving hours. All the acting is excellent, but special mention should be made of the three principal actors: Jon Barker (Face), Bruce Cromer (Subtle: the Alchemist), and Aedin Moloney (Dol Common). Brilliant. In Madison through August 31.
