I went to Shanghai Jazz with a group of six people last night. Everyone ordered something different and we were each very pleased with food and service. They did a fabulous job with social distancing. I felt comfortable. Let’s support these local family owned businesses so they can stay open!!

Dinner and a show. Whats not to like? Food was good and service was efficient. Outdoor dining at 38 degrees actually went well. Tents keep in the heat (somewhat).

First time going the other day after trying to for years it seems, and it definitely did not disappoint. Delicious food, probably some of the best made cocktails Ive ever had, top notch relaxing live music, great outdoor atmosphere with an attentive and fun staff that really make you feel welcome. Very enjoyable evening out with very good food, great live jazz (world class with Dan Levinson), and efficient service. Had the salmon and it was juicy. My date had the golden sesame chicken which was light and sweet! I also enjoyed the Rye-Cliff cocktail which was well balanced.Looking forward to returning to enjoy more high quality Jazz in NJ!

A cozy restaurant that doubles as a Jazz venue with bar. The mixed American and Chinese/oriental cuisine are quite good and the food and the drinks are a good setup for a romantic dinner or a pleasant break for an evening during the weekend. Enjoy the bar too, with a good selection of spirits.

Dim sum for the table appetizer was amazing! Great variety of dumplings sushi and salads. The entrees were average...Wish the food was spicier. We all ordered spicy dishes but none packed the punch we were looking for. Live jazz was nice, the restaurant itself was a bit crowded, definitely a cozy feel.

Came here for dinner and had a great time. Live Jazz music, great food that was unique and tasty. We had personalized service and the new owner came by to greet us and made great suggestions for food and drinks. Place was clean, upbeat, fun and an all around great time. It can get crowded on the weekend so plan accordingly. Food is really remarkable and yummy. Free parking in back. They serve alcoholic beverages too! Service was impeccable!!!

Its a pity to see a fine dining experience at Shanghai Jazz reduced to take-out. However, such is the state of affairs loving with COVID19. It was a very pleasant surprise that a CD was included with out meals. By the time our food reached home (3 minute drive) it was luke warm. After having to reheat, the charm was gone. So, I wish the folks at SJ would find a way to ensure their food is at Max temp when delivered, so theres at least a fighting chance that its still warm enough to be served right away at home.

What a great time. Had never heard of it til 2 hours before I got there, made a reservation, got there and it was one of the best nights out with my wife. The food that we ordered was delicious, we were Blessed to be there the night Bernard Pretty Purdie (Drummer for Aretha Franklin was playing and believe us he did not disappoint. Will definitely be back.

Was wandering around Madison NJ on a date night with my wife. We noticed a cheesy looking plastic sign falling over inside the glass vestibule of a restaurant claiming that this place was voted in the top-100 of the best jazz clubs in the world. I laughed, and pointed it out to my wife who said, Well, it sounds like something youd like, so we can go check it out at least.Well, Im super glad we did. The restaurant had a very subdued elegant vibe which instantly put us at ease. The greeter/possibly owner let us wander around and see the menu after assuring us that yes, indeed it has been rated as one of the worlds top-100 jazz clubs. Right here in Madison. My wife and I were very happy when the greeter/owners family came out and his maybe 3 year old son started running around and saying hello while the trio played.And of course, the trio were superb! Extra applause for the pianist and bassist that evening. We loved the music and the intimate size of the restaurant.All of the food was excellent as well - all of the full and rich flavors of your favorite Chinese take out place, yet miraculously none of the grease, corn syrup, and MSG. We ate everything and just loved it!The greeter also let us, a couple, sit at a 6-top because it was near the fireplace which my wife found so cute and exciting to have inside a restaurant.We will return!

The drinks and bartender were great as was the music. But the food was really bad. Liked the pot stickers. But the entree and desserts were terrible. Id only recommend coming for drinks and the music. Skip the food.

Go there if you have explored all other decent places to eat in the area. They served a dimsum platter which had 4 dimsums and 2 pieces of sushi (meant to be shared by two people). Yes, they had love jazz which was nice but terribly disappointing food.

I just picked up sesame chicken, Beijing Duck and vegetabke lo mein n spring rolls. I would give 100% excellent ratings. Unbelievably delicious which must be because of fresh ingredients. We cant wait till doors get open soon.

My family and I used to go to Shanghai Jazz under the previous ownership and were always very pleased with the service, entertainment and food. Today is the first time my family and I have gone to the restaurant under the new ownership. We ordered the $25 takeout special today that is offered during this Covid19 virus situation(includes appetizer, entree, and dessert). We ordered 2 orders of Shrimp, lobster & Snowpeas and 1 golden sesame chicken. I wish I had a better review, but I am sad to say we were very disappointed.Our appetizer (dragon dumplings) were undercooked. The Shrimp/lobster entrees were ok..nothing special.The golden sesame chicken was horrible, very dry- and not enough sauce. I had to put steak sauce on it to help get it down. We chose 2 key lime pies and 1 brownie. Key lime pie was ok....however THE BROWNIE was BURNT on the bottom. That was the last straw. I couldnt believe that they would serve it--it would have been better to say they ran out and give another option. Very sorry to report---Shanghai Jazz is not the same as far as the food is concerned. Hopefully the entertainment hasnt gone down hill too. !!!!!!!Signed---ONE UNHAPPY CUSTOMER

Tasting Menu - Kung Pao Chicken, Pad Thai, Chili Beef, and Chinese Broccoli and I have been coming to SJ as a single for many years, and have always felt welcomed by Hanna and David. Sometimes stuff for many reasons does not work out exactly as planned...i say, roll with t and enjoy this wonderful venue .I feel so lucky to have this lovely club,with amazing performers, day in/day out.Thank you, David and Hanna .

Had a wonderful time. The music was phenomenal, and so was the food. The Chilean sea bass was cooked to perfection. But if you heard 16 year old Leoneike Scheuble play piano there, you just might forget what you were eating. Look out for her, youll be astonished. She plays there every few months.

A fantasia deal! Great jazz, no cover. Just comes with the dinner -- $25 minimum, which we spent on an entree and a glass of wine. I think the minimum is higher on Fri & Sat, but the jazz is really first rate and just comes with your dinner. The Asian food is just OK, a bit gloppy for my taste, but you go there for the music.

Over from UK to visit our son and family. He suggested this would be a good place to go as my husband loves jazz. Am very glad we did, t service prompt,w food delicious, wine rather pricey, but the jazz was part of it all. A great night, part of a great holiday in USA.

What a fun vibe! Loved the live music - but if you want to talk at your table, request one away from the band, as it can get a little loud. Their food presentation is fantastic! Parking can be a little bit of a nightmare though, despite the parking lot in the back, so come early!

Performance was awesome! Food was barely edible. Two appetizers and two entrees, all were not good. Spicy tuna, not spicy. Vegetable roll was rubbery. Spicy schezuan shrimp special, nasty sauce, no spice, and an entire onion chopped on top of shrimp. Beef lettuce wraps were bland and it was the wrong type of lettuce for that dish. The waiter seemed annoyed at everything. The downstairs area is very nice and cocktails were great. I would go back just for the music and eat before I go!

We had our company holiday party here and it was absolutely perfect!! Tom helped me plan the event, and he was easy to reach and helped with all my questions. everyone that works at Shanghai Jazz was incredibly accommodating and professional. the food was excellent, the atmosphere in the downstairs room was cozy, and the jazz music was a very cool element. I plan on going again for their full menu and to experience the jazz in the main dining room. :)

This is a Chinese restaurant for westerners, not for Chinese. Absolutely overpriced for a common Asian dish (e.g. Pad Thai for $25). But the dinning experience and overall atmosphere is good. Jazz is awesome.

Great dim sum! We went on a special night with a full house on an extremely hot day and the restaurants A/C was struggling. In part of the dining room the heat was quite uncomfortable.

This place was a lot more casual and lacking in atmosphere than I expected. I had hoped to be transported back in time to glamorous 1940s Shanghai but the decor was just... cookie cutter. We could have been at any restaurant anywhere, not a jazz club that serves upscale Chinese food. Missed opportunity for a really cool ambiance. Service was ok. Cocktails are nice and strong, portions are good, menu is decent. Wish the food was spicier / less whitewashed, but good variety. The music was wonderful-- wish it could have gone on longer. Not sure if we will be back.

My wife and I enjoyed the most wonderful experience last night December 8 2018 at the Shanghai Jazz for our 34th anniversary! The owner Tom was magnificent, the Band and music was sensational the atmosphere and all the guests were classy, and the food was great. The waiters and waitresses were awesome. No doubt we’re coming back. Loved every bit of it!

The waiter was very mean I mentioned to him this was my birthday weekend and he said we dont give nor do anything special but I can decorate what ever cake you decide he never did anything. He never smiled he was obnoxious just mean. The music was excellent as well as the food but the waiter awful.

Waited 40 minutes to be seated, with a reservation. Watched a server unprofessionally yell at another waiter in front of us. Calamari completely oversalted. Entree was served in a pineapple, and the paper and plastic tag was still attached. Literally served cooked garbage next to the entree. Manager didnt seem to care. The live music was enjoyable, but the dining was complete trash. Wont waste money here again.

Great music and excellent food which is 5 star quality. Owner Thomas greeted everyone after the show which I thought was awesome and gave off great vibes. The entire evening was excellent. The band gave us a little extra since it was the last show. It was a Stevie Wonder tribute which was wonderful. I will definitely visit again!

Recently owners have changed. Service is okay but nasty. Food is one level above cheap Chinese food. Music is not jazz, bad mix.

It is a Chinese restaurant that has jazz music . The food was good and pricey but that was ok. The beer was $8 way to much. I did order a bourbon I think it was $16 .If you want to hear jazz music next time im going to Asbury to a bar

Food was delicious and the music was very enjoyable. The cocktails were spot on as well, we got 4 different ones between the two of us and it was hard to pick the winner. The tables were a little too close together for my preference but we ended up having a few conversations with the couple next to us which was nice. Definitely a place well revisit.

The music here can be great because just like live performance should be part of the equation is the audience. We saw an internet but ultimate excellent band.Dont go here expecting to have a conversation. And the good is good but not great. But go if you want to take the chance on seeing an outstanding performance come together like jazz can.

Intimate atmosphere with the acts playing right in the dining area. If there is an act playing expect to yell if you want to carry on your conversation especially if you get a table right next to the stage. Great food and cocktails.

This restaurant exemplifies the definition of hospitality! We were a party of 6, and not once, did we need or want anything. Our waiter Nolan was incredibly kind, helpful, considerate, thoughtful and prompt. Service aside, the food is wonderfully prepared and served. Highly recommend the key lime pie made by the owner for desert. The ambience is also very vibrant with world class jazz musicians providing entertainment! Youre guaranteed to have an enjoyable meal and experience here.

Shanghai Jazz is the premiere place for classic Blues and Jazz in New Jersey! The ambience is intimate, the staff is efficient and graciously accomodating.Our party waspleased with their appetizers, entrees, cocktails and selected German Riesling.A photo op with the guitarist and a friendly conversation with knowledgeable diners made for a delightful evening.
