Was not open when we arrived. Looked around, then walked back to downtown. Facility holds some of the oldest original totem poles in Juneau. A true heritage and preservation facility. Totem poles and Totem figures adorn the outside of the building. Would be worth the visit to talk to Staff about preservation and historical significance of older Totem poles.

Very good value for your money. $6 for adults and children 12 and under are free if I remember correctly. Its not a huge place and does not take long to go through, but you can learn a lot about totems in a very short amount of time. The staff is very friendly, knowledgeable and willing to answer all your questions.

It costs $6.00 USD to get in the place and it is worth every penny. The have several unrestored totem poles to examine and take pictures of. You also learn about the history of the totem pole and how they were designed NOT to last forever. Well worth the visit.

The young man who spoke to the visitors gave us a lot of information on the history, tradition, and cultural significance of totem poles. The center had other pretty artifacts as well. At $6pp, this was a bargain as compared to the cruise excursion to see totem poles. Walkable from the cruise port, you pass Married Mans Trail and there are interpretive signs about the salmon ladders.

Read. Learn. Remember these tribes and who was, is, and will always be here. It was informative and allows us all the priviledge to see a glimpse of the past. I could spend hours there. I only wish I had more time. It was a steal for $6 as I feel allowing us all to see these beautiful totems and artifact pieces of a tribes past is an honor in itself.

It obvious this place left a lasting impression on a young kid. I remember the warm friendly people and even when me and my friend wonder into a bar they was not rude or abrupt, And then walking the streets and wanting to buy hand carved totem pole with little money. A older gentleman asked me how much I had and i can remember since it was over 35 years ago but I know it wasnt much. So he told me a story behind the making and time and meaning and then just gave me one. I had for so many years and was lost in my many moves. But the memories and thoughts have never faded. I guess Google is good for something after all =)

This is a good place to learn honest information about native people of Alaska. The center gives a sense of the pride of the people. In particular, a young man, who is a student, was docent the day I visited. He was engaging and enthusiastic about sharing his knowledge. He truly wanted people to understand the people and their culture as it is represented at the center. As a side note, I had been on a Holand America cruise the day I visited. I walked to the center from the port rather than take a cab. It was a wonderful walk. There were signs along the streets that clearly led me to the center. It was good excercise and it was a nice way to see the neighborhood.

Our tour guide on this was so sweet. She was so knowledgeable and had theee best jokes. She knew my dream was to see a wild bear from a far so she took a little detour to a high road that overlooked a water reservoir that water bears are always hanging out at. At this time I didn’t see any bears and I was so disappointed but the totem park made up for it because we did see flying fish and salmon and orcas in the distance. Plus it was just beautiful.

Educational and interesting. We visited on a rainy morning during a cruise stop. We took the time to read the information placards, which provided lots of history and explanations. Viewing the massive totems indoors and close-up provided additional perspective on the details of the story telling. The only downside were our teenager bored quickly, and we had to hurry back to the ship to meet an excursion. We visited for an hour, and likely could have visited for another hour or so.

The center is about a 40 minute walk from the port and has decent amount of totem poles and artifacts. There are only 2 totem poles that are standing up right outside. The rest are older ones that are inside and encased for preservation. If youre looking for more totem poles that are standing upright Id recommend going to The Saxman Totem Park.

Take the Free ShuttleOff the Carnival cruise ship to the Free Shuttle and a rainy day in Ketchikan we went to the Totem Heritage Center which was warm and dry with some very neat totem poles and history. The admission was only $5 person. They preserves and perpetuates the living artistic traditions of the Tlingit, Haida and Tsimshian peoples that gave rise to the original totem poles on display and provides the opportunity to discover, learn and practice Native arts to inspire cultural understanding. Their knowledgeable staff helped us and other visitors gain a historical context with which to approach contemporary totem poles and the cultural traditions present in their community. There are restrooms in the back and they limit food/drinks in areas but could take photos throughout. Great place to stop by for a rainy day.

Its a venue for spreading propaganda to tourists. They fail to mention that all the old totems were looted by early white settlers. Its operated by the City of Ketchikan. The city managment is as corrupt now as it was in the history this museum showcases. If a native historian came in and fact checked the place, it would close down.
