The Iowa City community is so lucky to have Hancher Auditorium return to the area after the flood of 2008. We make it a point to take our kids to as much programming as possible each season. From musicals, poetry, art exhibits, or Broadway plays, Hancher brings it all. The theater seats are comfortable and there are no bad seats in the place. The acoustics are wonderful. We enjoy going early for a bite to eat in the cafe and delicious cocktails. You can even pre-order cocktails for intermission! Besides the stunning interior, Hancher is a feast for the eyes outside too. There are no straight lines, it almost seems as though the building bows to the city above. It is a beautiful backdrop for photos and photography shoots.

My wife and I attendedan amazing new years eve celebration with a concert and fireworks display. The parking was great, the venue was excellent, the entertainment was dazzling! We had an amazing evening with excellent service. It has 3 levels and an outdoor balcony, from which were watch the impressive fireworks display! If your attending an event here, know it will be high class and a great experience!

This was such an amazing venue which overlooks the river. Inside there is a cafe and bar with table service. The auditorium was beautiful, with the amazing sound quality. There is an upper and lower balcony, service for disabled, and it is wonderfully appointed.

Never a disappointment at Hancher. The three shows that I have been to were all beautiful quality and surprisingly easy to hear, even from far away. This is a beautiful place to go to and you dont have to feel bad if you are casually dressed or formally dressed. They seem welcoming and inclusive for everyone here.

Its an absolutely beautiful space that enables a small city like Iowa City to feel like a major metropolitan area, bringing in some very impressive acts. Hancher is also very good for the city as a whole in its outreach to the community in aiming to include more people that may feel marginalized.

This brand new auditoriums designers didnt miss anything! The architects designed large open spaces for both theater goers as well as performers. I heard several comments backstage about how bright, open and easy to navigate it was. Far superior to most places they have been in the world. The acousticians made an absolutely fabulous space to hear perfectly from any of the 1600 seat in the auditorium. Even the everyday lighting was a marvel to behold

Hancher is probably the best auditorium in Iowa. Although smaller than the one in Des Moines, the same quality performances come here to Iowa City like they do in Des Moines and Hancher is so much nicer. Everything is very modern and the greens are perfect for outdoor performances.

I went to Hancher when they showed Book of Mormon, mostly out of curiosity. The auditorium was gorgeous, an architectural marvel. My son and I were driving by last weekend and he asked me what that large building was. I had a heartwarming conversation about Hancher Auditorium with him, and how I learned about the arts growing up there, and how I would love to take him someday. He expressed a whole lot of interest in doing that. I actually welled up with excitement, ran home and checked the schedule. To say it was disappointing would be an understatement. The acts they are putting up there are more pretentious than a professor at the Java House waiting to correct student grammar. From Van Jones to the Chieftans, there was only one single event I figured he wouldnt fall asleep five minutes into. The Lincoln Center Orchestra was sold out, and it would have cost us 98 dollars to attend. For two people, one of them a child. I might as well drive him to a baseball game in Chicago. He loved that, but I want to expose him to the arts. I want him to experience the majesty that used to be Hancher. One thing is abundantly clear: they are taking no outside counsel about what acts to put up there. Its seemingly baby boomers, or just one baby boomer, of which cultural tastes have been severely warped by time and way, way, way too much money. Im not sure if they even want to see some of these acts, or if they want to brag about seeing them at dinner parties, or laud it over their friends that saw them debut in New York.Do they hear an act highlighted on NPR or CBS in The Morning and HAVE to have it because its perceived cultural stalwart? I hate to play this card: but this is a tax payer, publicly funded facility by way of a state University. Sure, private donors helped construct and support the facility, but they were subsidized by the land that went on and by tuition that came in, and ultimately our tax dollars. Im a lilly livered left freak liberal, so I would love to contribute to something as beautiful as Hancher if it wasnt run aground. Im sure those private donors demanded to be on the board, and they are making the decisions. Old, rich, boring decisions. You see, artists cant even afford to see the art in Hancher. And the artists definitely cant take their children. That wasnt how it was. My lovely middle class parents took me to countless shows at Hancher. The Nutcracker made me cry for the first time as a little boy. B.B. King solidified my love for the Blues, and sent me on a Blues adventure through America. Watching Dave Attell at Hancher made me try stand up comedy. I was no good at it, but it wasnt his political correctness that I loved, it was that he was amazing and made me hurt I was laughing so hard. You see, this is what I want for the next generation. This is what Hancher should want as well. Bookings cannot just be drawn to the here and now, youve got to think of subscriptions and revenue from the next generation as well. That is not remotely considered.Im saying these things not out of harsh criticism or hatred, or even anger. Im only EXTREMELY passionate and interested in seeing Hancher make a pivot into reconsidering their bookings and to be more inclusive.Because as I searched YouTube for act after act on YouTube on upcoming acts at Hancher, desperately hoping my son would grab ahold of anything eventually he just shook his head and walked away. Thus solidifying the notion that they are alienating the next two generations of audience goers from being included in their attendances. I once was in love, and now Im not interested, and Lord knows, kids are clearly not welcome.

I never experienced the Old Hatcher, but the new building is exceptional. Weve been to two shows and had great views for both, even though we were in nosebleed seats for one of them. The staff was very helpful when it came to finding our seats, and unlike other large performances the was never a long wait to get into or out of the theater. We havent tried any of their food or drinks, so I cannot comment on their service/price/quality.Of note, there was a long line for the womens room during intermission and for the elevator.

Very nice venue for concerts, lectures, plays, stand-up, etc. Construction seems to never end in this part of Iowa City, the area will be much more driver friendly when complete though. Great auditorium. I just saw the Book of Mormon and it was really amazing and spectacular to see the musical performance. Now I took off a star for three reasons. For $175 million to build a new one, they could have added more bathrooms than 3 urinals and two regular toilets. Spent around 5 minutes or so waiting in line which takes up a chunk of intermission timeFor concessions, Im not bout to pay $3 for a dang coke that looks like its 12 ounces. No wonder people are poor but then again, itll take a lot more than rich donors and federal funding to make the $175 million building worth it.Also the lines were too long which added more time to wait which made intermission time during the Book of Mormon seem rather short. And I know that because when the second act got started, I saw on three occasions groups of people getting back into their seats while the characters were on stage singing and dancing. You can call them rude and disrespectful but that wouldnt happened if the lines werent too long to begin with.Rooms of improvement:-Add more bathrooms to reduce lines-Hire more people to serve drinks to reduce lines
