This was in my top three favorite museums in the Kansas City area. The staff was very helpful and this is a blast for family and kids. Great history of course with the whole area that you learn about as well.

Its just an interesting spot to check out if you like independence history. Or just history.

My family and I had the opportunity to do a haunted 2 or 1 late evening here at the jail. It was so fun to hang out with friends and family while hunting ghosts. The history behind the museum was astonishing and I would definitely return back with my family for another ghost hunt. Ive been on their normal tour as well and enjoyed that so much. They offer a horse-and-buggy ride right from the front door with a tour of the city and its history. This is a wonderful date night.

The jail and its history are fascinating if you like that kind of thing... the October ghost tour, not so much! We didnt realize what we had bought tickets to, thinking they had turned the jail into a fun, haunted house. Nope! The tour was hosted by a paranormal team, talking about the spirits that still frequent the jail, and weird things that have happened on OTHER group tours. Sorry. Not buying it.

We really enjoyed this, its a self guided tour. Very cheap to get in and its well worth it. The cellblocks were kind of scary. We were the only ones there and smelt a bad smell of body odor that seemed to follow us around after we entered the first cell. It would go away and come back. At first I thought it was me but after checking it was not. Very spooky, I would go back again!

It was a fun tour of the building and I learned a few thing along the way. Would recommend going on the tour with a small group because some areas are small and you will feel cramped. Not very toddler friendly because of areas being roped off and it has older items that they dont want touched.

Not worth the eight dollars it costs to get in. There are displays that are empty. There is no fluidity to any of the museum. Just feels as if no pride is taken in the museum. Only reason the museum gets two stars, is because the jail itself is still pretty cool looking. Even though the top half of the jail is not shown. Overall not worth it.

Wed give it a 4 1/2 on the haunted scale. Dizziness prevails, so those with heart and/or medical conditions should be advised. Heaviness and vertigo may affect you. Beware, but be open to the spirits present. Theres a great deal of negative residual energy in the jail cells. The Marshalls quarters hold a special energy, and specifically the nannys quarters. You will see things.

The 1859 Jail is one of the very few Museum/Jail. Great friendly knowledgeable staff. I hear it is haunted by the ghosts of former inmates like Frank James and William Quantrill.
