This is one of the oldest cemetery’s in Houston.(1871)It features HowArd Hughes and the people who built. Houston. It is a peaceful respite from the city beyond the gate,and has history here from last century and the one before that. Easy to park and walk around a contrast to the skyline behind it. A quiet that belies the city it serves. A peaceful walk.

Beautiful, well-maintained cemetary with a very peaceful atmosphere. Lots of wonderful landscaping, small wildlife, and historic grave sites. A unique place for an afternoon walk or jog, just be mindful of any funeral proceedings.

Beautiful historical cemetery with great views of the city on the far end of it. The place is easy to access and the roads are wide enough to go around the place by car if you prefer that over walking around. Lots of places to stop and to snap beautiful photographs. Highly recommended.

This is a very peaceful resting place. I wish there was a rule against bringing your dogs here or biking here. It’s very disrespectful to the deceased to do that and if you do you should be ashamed of yourself.

Glenwood is a Historical cemetery near downtown Houston. It is a beautiful and tranquil place frequently visited by those who have loved one interned there and those just looking for a peaceful spot. This place has tons of history. When you walk around you will notice a lot of the names look fimilar. Areas of houston, street names, buildings, and landmarks are named after people that built and ran Houston are buried here. If you have nothing to do in an afternoon just walk around and enjoy. I do wish they have self guided tours or information on the most popular graves. Check out Howard Hughes and his parents grave. The have quite a few governers that call this place home. I think a few presidents of the Republic of Texas are here also. And a famous actress and a few doctors that changed the medical field. If the grounds can talk. Be careful of the zombies they will eat your brains lol jk

This place is just beautiful and peaceful. I highly recommend checking it out.

Great place to have a picnic with your family surrounding your departed. Serene environment coupled with ample shade from some of the oldest trees you’ll see that have survived countless storms. This cemetery is home to a lot of families that help build the city so please give all the respect towards your surroundings.

We love to go to different cemeteries just to feel the calmness....ya we are weird but the calmness in the middle of the city was amazing.

Bernice Is the historian; she helped me and my sisters piece together family history back multiple generations. She is very genuine and friendly, and is truly interested in understanding family connections and their histories.

Obviously so many great historical figures rest here. A stand out for me is Anson Jones - the last President of the Republic of Texas. I posted some photos from my last visit.

This is a really interesting place! If you know anything about Texas history you will certainly find someone here to talk about. Glenwood is full of prominent Texans. Walk around and read the names and you will hear street names, county names, public places and many which were in the history books.Monuments speak of the importance of the departed. Some are very modest and some interesting, some modern and some will break your heart.

Glenwood Cemetery is literally one of my favorite places in the world. Generations of history are buried here under elaborate and often moving monuments in this exquisite and lush setting on the elevated banks of Buffalo Bayou opposite downtown Houston. In the shade of a diverse collection of hundreds of trees rests dozens of prominent figures from American history - such as the famous billionaire aviator Howard Hughes, and the first president of the Republic of Texas, Anson Jones.In nice weather this is a marvelous place to explore on foot. Youll see and appreciate much more. But even just driving through the cemetery is a special experience. The roads snake almost randomly up, down, and around through the varied elevations of all 42 acres. From your car you can take a slow drive and read prominent names and dates on the amazing works of art chiseled out of the full spectrum of stones and metals.

As weird as this sounds I could spend all day here. It’s a beautiful and peaceful place to be. There’s a lot of beauty in the monuments and the historical aspect adds to the appeal.

Lots of history. Many historical people buried here. Ancient oak trees that you wont find many places anymore. Lots of interesting tomb stones and so peaceful to be so close to Houston. It is worth your time. If you like history, nature, and architecture you wont be disappointed. Wear walking shoes and dont be in a hurry. Enjoy.

The mgr and Secretary were very helpful. Its free just to walk around and soak up the history. The beautiful location, flowers, old trees, delightful animals, make for a very momentous day. Take a walk on the wild side.

Beautiful cemetery that I have visited on several occasions both alone for peace and also with family. This cemetery has so much Houston history at every turn that with each returning visit I learned something new. During my last visit I took a guided docent walking tour which was beyond amazing and I suggest everyone give that a try to learn not only about Howard Hughes resting place but also little know facts about some lesser known people buried here.

It may not sound like a place you want to visit during your holidays but then youll be wrong!This is a must see. Beautiful place, very well kept, lots of art and the views of Houston skyline are impressive.The best part...no traffic and no annoying crowds.

Took my sons cub scout troop here to learn about historical figures. It was a great experience for the scouts and parents. Learned a lot of neat history about the city and the residents and families that formed it. Pretty tranquil place and has pretty easy walking paths.

I havent been in an Historic cemetery since I came here in Houston in 1985. The place was so peaceful, beautiful monuments , trees, historical tombstones ...I know other people might think its strange to roam around on cemeteries but its a peaceful place to go...AileenHouston, Texas

Howard Hughess grave could be the main attraction, but the place overall is so beautiful and peaceful. If you spend some time looking around, you can find many of the big names of Houston. Many streets, buildings, and parks have been named after people in this cemetery.

Wow. Beautiful cemetery for photography or just to walk around. Not the easiest to get around if you are in a wheelchair but I suppose that would be true for most cemeteries.

First I was afraid,I was petrified,Kept thinking I couldnt walk alone,With all these graves by my side,But I spent so many hours,Thinking how Id yelp this place,I grew strong,I learned how to write on,And so Im back,Out on Washington,I just walked in to find it here,With nice headstones all over the place,I should have stole the FTR,I should have added this to my bookmarks,If I had known for just one second,A five star I would get to see!Is it weird to rate a cemetery a 5 star?I knew this would be an interesting exploration right when I drove in and saw a familiar face on the side of the road with a camera in hand...I scream out, Gretchen?Sure enough it was our very own top yelper out and about taking pictures. I gracefully asked if I could join her on my tour around the cemetery. She showed me some very recognizable Houstonian families and even showed me where Howard Hughes burial site was.The headstones in the place are ridiculous. It was like walking through a museum with statues all around. If you are arent creeped out by the fact that its a cemetery I suggest you come check this place out. As it is one of the best kept secrets in Houston.
