The Phoenix was an amazing new opera. Thomas Hampson in the lead role blew away a lot of the audience. Quite why the theatre was not packed full I have no idea as this opera I will undoubtedly become an American classic.

Houston Grand Opera is back at the Wortham!Balcony is the best (and most reasonably priced) seating. You still have an amazing view. And its better than the grand tier because the ceiling is lower in the grand tier which partially ruins the grand-feel of the show. Its also better than orchestra seating because of the viewing angle; you can see the whole stage better (less obstruction from those seating in front of you). And lastly, you can see the orchestra :)One complaint is that its freezing in there. Im used to theatres being cold, but this had to be 40-50 degrees. Maybe its colder higher up?

Worst set design I’ve ever seen for a Rigoletto production. Y’all trying to out think for one of the classics. All the thoughts about post WW1 aesthetic was totally lost. Costumes were good, the make up wasn’t in play for those seated above mid orchestra. Rigoletto’s baritone was excellent, Duke’s tenor deserved the little applause he received. Gilda’s soprano got lost if she wasn’t straight on to the audience...weak. Worst Rigoletto I’ve ever seen.

Everytime is a new wonderful experience, hopefully one day they will get better catering, but for the meanwhile just the atmosphere and the plays are enough to keep going.

Its a Houston institution, support the arts people! Also if you are unsure about opera dip into some Puccini. Thats some telenovella stuff.

Every performance is like being sucked in a story book (or movie if you prefer). The performers, stage and costume design, adaptations, everything is orchestrated perfectly for unforgettable experience!

I went to see Saul at Houston Grand Opera. It was the most horrific and disgusting interpretation of the bible story of Saul and David Ive ever seen. I didnt expect it to be perfect, but it completely misrepresented the story with falsehoods and raunchy displays. Makes me question the direction the artistic directors at HGO are taking and concerns me with what they will do in the future.

I think that the Opera is not for everyone. It was a fun new experience for us, however we would have enjoyed a different production. The inside of this opera house is really beautiful and intimate. We even walked there from the ball park.

The opera house in Houston is beautiful and the every show is a transcendent experience. I do wish for a little more variety every season as they seem to repeat a lot of operas without much time in between seasons, aside from that I love HGO and I have a subscription with them.

This is not a PLACE, it is an EVENT. And, while the last opera was excellent, as usual, the event a week ago was a performance by the Houston Ballet. It was the best new ballet choreographed by Stanton Welch since his arrival. Truly excellent.

Went to Sweeney Todd and The little prince... Actually both were great experiences! Great music, great singing. The lyrics were always at the top of the stage if you couldnt understand them. The balcony is a little high up, but you can see the whole stage well. Bring a small pair of binoculars if you can. Still great seats!! Its worth going to, the seats werent too terribly expensive. Parking is normal price for Houston events. Place was packed both times. Wine was good on the intermission. Quiet, friendly atmosphere.

The top of the Houston theater scene is the Houston Grand Opera. Costumes and sets are excellent. Locally produced shows are especially creative.

We went to see West Side story this evening, and while the show was good, until the opera gets back to their home after Harvey damage, you should be aware of how unpleasant the temporary space is. It’s more of a gymnasium experience - super uncomfortable chairs, obstructed views that are not called out in the purchasing process, and the tickets were just as expensive. While I can tolerate the temporary space and be sensitive to Harvey damage, I did not appreciate still paying more than $200 for obstructed views and uncomfortable seats.

Just went to the reopening of the Wortham Center after the flood damage from Hurricane Harvey. Magnificent concert with Placido Domingo and Ana Maria Martinez. Such magnificent performance. Placido Domingo performed in Aida, the very first opera in the Wortham in 1987. 31 years later he reopens the theater.

I went to see a production of the Abduction from the Seraglio and was impressed. It can be confusing to find your way if you have not been there before, but the staff were helpful. If you know you want something to eat or drink during an intermission, you definitely have to pre-order before a performance as you may not have time otherwise. The food options on-site are provided by Aramark, so it will not be the greatest, but much better than the Aramark fare at other venues even if it is just as expensive. Parking can be problematic, though as you may need to drive around to find a parking spot and the sign for the garage for the Opera is not the most visible. When going down Prairie Street, keep to the far left of the sign for valet parking and you should see a tunnel leading to parking before you cross the bridge. I recommend arriving more than a half hour before the performance since you may have to walk up stairs and through the Wortham Center tunnels if you park.
