This Museum is just downright amazing! It’s big and spacious with amazing informative staff and quite a good bit of details on what is on display and why it mattered, it’s probably the best museum I’ve been to.As for their claim to having good educational programs and displays here, well again. It’s absolutely no joke! They really do have some great informative displays of things such as drag and thrust and the general aerodynamics of planes! Along with that their section about aviation mapping and weather effects on planes was really good. Their features on how planes engines work was again, really good! I found really nothing to complain about, it’s just a amazing museum doing a great job of contextualization and presentation. The tickets aren’t too expensive either, they’re rather reasonably priced!

Were lucky to have a place like this in Houston. Its a beautiful museum, has an astounding number of historic aircraft, and it has a lot of hands on activities for all ages, even outside where they have a vegetable garden. The day we went, they had a few aviators from WW2 by the planes they flew, which was a really special opportunity. They also had an African Americans in Aviation traveling exhibit, which was a great way of highlighting an otherwise little known part of aviation history. Also, be on the lookout for a Russian MiG and a German WW2 bomber. Very unique experience!

Great place to visit! My hubby and I went last Sunday and viewed the planes... did the simulator...and shopped at the gift shop The employees were so kind. I found out if you book it you can actually go up in the air with a pilot for $250.00! Well worth it for a once in a lifetime experience! Take your family and friends! It’s a wonderful place! We are going back to take our US Navy Airman in December when she comes home on leave!!!!

Not a huge place but boy do they fit a lot in. The two main hangers have a excellent range of warbirds and a few civilian planes as well. A surprising number are apparently airworthy. Including a civilian owned AH1 cobra helicopter. Lots of interactive displays and a nice gift shop. A bunch of historical photo displays in several galleries as well that for a small area are incredibly comprehensive. If youre a warbirds nerd you should go. They also have about 4 different planes you can actually fly in for a fee including a steer man.

Older kids and adults can spend time on the flight simulators. Saturday and Sunday are great times to go for maximizing your time on the simulators. Be prepared to make and fly paper airplanes with your kids(highlight for our youngest). We bought an inexpensive membership that allows us unlimited visits and invitations to special events.

Mom and I like to come to Ellington to see the different planes. Were both unable to stand or walk very long so we just ride through. Love it when the Museum has its old planes out. Today we got to see the yellow Navy byplane take off.Update:Today 10/09/20 is my moms 84th birthday. My sister and nephew always do big things for us. When asked this year what she wanted to she said see the flight museum. We are both handicapped, so unable to walk around. But we found that they offer wheelchairs for use. So my sister and nephew, came yesterday and brought us her to see the planes we love up close. The Museum is so nice, It was soooo much fun. My sister use to do the Ellington air show years ago. So she new what all the planes were so was moms tour guide, and my nephew learned it all from her so he was my guide. It made it even more special to hear about everything. My sister actually meet owner of The Ace in the hole plane at those shows and got to fly in it, plus many others.

Excellent, less well known Houston museum. Fine collection of meticulously restored aircraft, from small Piper trainers to an early Continental Airlines plane, some military, others not. Also sprinkling of jeeps, helicopters, and other associated items. Well designededucational explanations of all of these. Also, very good basicflight explanation displays, with interactive features which seemto be off limits for Covid reasons at time of this visit. Other exhibitsas well, including one on the closing months of the Second WorldWar. and a lot of Texas aviation history. Really worthwhile for people of all ages to understand and appreciate this aspect of the enormous efforts and sacrifice of so many men and women in civil and military aviation, especially at a time when military history seems to get less emphasis in school history courses. One other note: social distancing works out a little better in thismuseum than most, as the two major exhibit halls are essentiallyindoor, air-conditioned hangar-sized spaces.Highly recommenbded.

The aircrafts, the history, learning how planes work and how they have evolved over time was interesting. THANK YOU TO DUNCAN!! Not sure if he was a volunteer or he worked there but he was great with my son (he has autism) helping him learn about planes and navigate the different exhibits. I highly recommend coming to visit this museum. Be warned its not easy to find I had to use my Google Maps to find the place and it was a 40-45 minute drive but totally worth it! Visited this museum during Smithsonian Museum Day. The facilities are exceptional and the hangars are super clean and can be opened up. The staff are friendly and I even saw a volunteer give a good talk on the aircraft. This is well worth it if you get the $10 per person ticket. There is a room for young children to learn about the principles of flight. My only complaint is on the outside of the museum when it rains, there is massive runoff from the landscaping onto the walkways, and also the exterior door in the cafe cannot close properly and water gets in from there, but Im sure this relatively new problem will be fixed in short order.

In case you were wondering, this is the same Lone Star Flight Museum that was previously in Galveston, TX. They moved out of the old facility due to size restrictions and concern over possible damage from hurricanes (they previously got hit pretty hard by Ike back in 08), and needless to say the new location payed off, as they avoided damage entirely when Harvey hit. With that out of the way, on to the actual review. The new $38M, 130,000-sqft facility located at Ellington Airport houses over 20 historical aircraft and dozens of aviation artifacts, and is leaps and bounds above the previous location. The staff is helpful and friendly, and they maintain the facility and the aircraft and exhibits excellently.Admission is $14.95 for Adults, $12.95 for Seniors (65+) and Youth (12-17), and $9.95 for Children. Military discount of $11.95 is available for in person purchases (with valid ID) and is applicable for up to 4 tickets per visit. An AAA discount of $3 off is available as well. During the summer months, the museum offers $5 Museum Mondays. See website for special events and discounts.Hours are Monday thru Friday 9a to 5p, and Sunday 12p to 5p. Holidays may affect these times, call ahead if you are unsure.Upon entering the facility, you will find yourself in the central hall, consisting of admissions, a rotating gallery focusing on aviation heritage, the gift shop, and a flight simulation room (part of the museums aviation learning center), intended for STEM use, but open to public use Saturdays 11a to 3p, and Sundays 12p to 3p. At the end of the central hall, the museum splits into 2 wings, with the museums theater sitting at the end of the main hall.Down the left wing you will find the Waltrip Hangar, containing a number of iconic aircraft, including a B-17 Flying Fortress, a B-25 Michell, a P-47 Thunderbolt, and a number of other aircraft ranging from civilian to military, as well as a number of aviation artifacts, including a series of early engines and propellers from the beginnings of powered flight. The left wing of the museum continues with a number of STEM-oriented classrooms that are used for fieldtrips and the likes, providing Houston-area children and schools a healthy and plentiful environment for learning about Aviation, Engineering, and how the two combine to affect our daily lives.Down the right wing of the museum you will find the Heritage Hangar, housing the rest of the museums aircraft, of which include a 1940s era DC-3 Passenger Aircraft, an A-1 Sky Raider, a MiG-17 (on loan from another musuem; milaege may vary), a Vought F4U Corsair, an AH-1 Cobra, and a number of other aircraft, again, ranging from civilian to military, from all eras of flight. At the end of the right wing, you will find the Galleries, consisting of the Texas Aviation Heritage gallery, the Flight Academy gallery, and the Texas Aviation Hall of Fame. Each of these galleries consist of a mix of in depth info boards, detailing a broad range of aviation subjects, and interactive stations, providing visual and hands on demonstrations of various flight mechanics and aviation topics, with each area specializing in a different set of fields. The Texas Aviation Heritage gallery, for instance, covers Texas deep roots in aviation, while the Flight Academy covers all there is to know about the foundations of aviation and flight in general.Tying in with the previous area, a number of info boards can be found within the 2 hangars, lining the walls and the hangar floor with plentiful information on the aircraft and aviation history.Of special note before I conclude is that the LSFMs collection of aircraft has a very unique quality to it, in that the majority of the museums permanent aircraft are in flight ready condition, and that the museum regularly provides ride along flights, though prices and availability vary, please contact LSFM for further information. All in all, the LSFM is a wonderful stop for anyone in the area, and will provide ample fun for all ages. Please check the museum out if you ever get the chance.

This museum is wonderful! We went on a tour recently, and it was incredible to hear the history of aircraft, and get to see the aircraft in person. The museum is huge, so put your walking shoes on! The tour guides (both that we had were veterans) are extremely knowledgable, and can answer any questions you or your family members come up with. We were greeted immediately, and the staff is extremely friendly. I will say that taking a child under the age of 4 is probably not a good idea if you are doing the tour, unless you go sans tour guide, and see only the interactive parts as it can get overwhelmingly long for them. I had my 2 year old with me, and he was overjoyed to see the large planes, and get to play with the interactive museum pieces; however, he was quite restless on the longer more informational portions of the tour. They also have a gift shop that is filled with aircraft memorabilia, from baby pilot onesies to diecast replicas, they have something for every aged air plane lover to enjoy. This is a museum that is a must for anyone who is interested in planes.

Its a bit pricey, but theyre preserving incredible artifacts that otherwise would be lost to time, I have flown on their Boeing B-17G, Thunderbird, but now that flights are indefinitely (as of 2020) suspended, I can no longer tell you to go fly on them, but I can say that the staff is amazing, and I have spent 2 times volunteering there, but I will be returning once the pandemic is over. A lot of art design and layout work went into the displays. We had 4 girls with us on this visit, and were so pleased to see women featured in every aspect of aviation history and the business of aviation. You can tell education and retaining interest in students will be a big part of this museums activities.
