Even though its rather small compared to other museums in the area, it was a great experience. The staff is very informative and courteous. I had kids and they were very patient. There were lots of hands on activities as well.

This is a free wonderfully curated contemporary arts museum. It host national , a international and local centric shows.. it has focus and lovely presentation.it sounds cliche but you will leave inspired with much to think about. Banksy’s “ Exit through the gift shop aside; they have a cool eclectic gift shop full of fun quirky things parking across the street in an underground garage or on street.

I went to go see the Garrett Bradley American Rhapsody exhibit. The exhibit was good. Not what I expected, but better. It is worth coming back especially for me since I have trouble with contemporary art. There are three of her short films on display. on the first floor. On the second is some of the work of Will Boone featuring his The Highway Hex, his personal, hand-made, battery operated juke box, and a few of his large hanging paint-sculptures. Our tour guide was Rosemary. She was good and very pleasant. On the phone, I spoke with Adriana a few times and she was very nice and helpful each time. The staff, as far as I can tell, is great. I will definitely be back.

Small by any standard for a museum, they had three video style exhibits running on the top floor, and the lower level in flux when I went. Diversity in art does not mean just make room for disadvantaged artists. Curator could have scheduled top floor much better during construction project below.

The Houston Contemporary Arts museum is a free of charge modern art museum with an interesting collection. Definitely worthwhile popping by when spending one or a few days in the famous Museum District of Houston.

You MUST see The Norman Rockwell exhibit at The Museum of Fine Art Houston. IT BROUGHT ME TO TEARS !!! Franklin Roosevelts freedom of speech, freedom of worship, freedom from fear, & freedom from want were his reasons to fight WWII. After Sat. Eve. Post work, Norman Rockwell devoted his talents to the Civil Rights themes. Commentary from Ruby Bridges, 6 year old pioneer in Louisiana integration. Ive seen FORTY major exhibits in my life. If in Houston, DONT MISS THIS ONE !!!

Houstons Contemporary art scene at its best. Small venue museum with impactful exhibits.

Its free and often weird. Art is many different things to many different people. If you like it, GREAT. If not... well, the MFAH is across the street (and very expensive - $17 for a ticket?!?). There are several other local museums.

Went with a friend. It was free, and had such nice art. I would deffo go to the upstairs exhibit right now, very thought provoking. Downstairs was more classically beautiful, but still something out of the norm.

Always an interesting subject/topic going on here. Every 3-4 months there is a new theme, new artists to appreciate their self abstract creations..

Funky little place and a nice change from some of the other museums in the area. Free to enter. Wasnt impressed with the exhibit they had at the time, but exhibits change regularly

I will always love this place. I used to spend so much time here as a teenager in the nineties and it still brings me so much joy to be there.

My favorite art museum in town. It is free to enter and the gift shop downstairs sells interesting toys and gifts. Everytime I bring a friend here they enjoy it. It can get weird sometimes but thats the point.

A shadow of the MMA or the Whitney (both in New York) but a good starter for the latter.

Small, quant, eye opening. Two floors of amazing exhibits. High quality paper towels in downstairs bathroom. 5 star experience. Friendly and diverse staff.

Very interesting and emotionally moving art

The exhibits tell so many stories. First from a open-minded point of view, somewhat risque but yet tasteful. I have never been disappointed! The photo that I posted was due to the opportunity that I was given to create my own artwork while I was there!

The contemporary art exhibits are always magnificent. The entrance is free of charge. Themes can provide an effective structure for engaging with art.

This place rocked! Contemporary and outside of mainstream, poignant and full of impact. I saw the shapeshifters collection and was truly amazed. I saw the Stonewall collection and was truly educated. I was lucky enough to find free street parking downtown, and walked around the area which is beautiful for about a half an hour until it opened. Thank you to the contributors and donors who make this available for all of us!

This is a great little shop! There is kidrobot stuff and exclusives made by Frank Kozik. Frank Koziks studio is in the back of the shop.

Staff is great . Depending on exhibit kids might be entertained. Very organized. It’s a great stop if you are going museum hopping. Very interesting museum. Getting to Learn about different cultures is always fun. I highly recommend we need more young people visiting museums. I tell you just drop it and you will be surprised on how much you learn

I enjoyed the exhibits and especially enjoyed the fashion show by the teen council. The fashion inside the exhibit hall on the main floor was very interesting. The creativity shown by the teen designers and their models in the fashion show was inspiring. I enjoyed my visit and will visit again. I cant believe Ive lived my entire life in Houston and had never visited this particular museum!

Just go a look for yourself, a museum always will be an intimate and sensational experience.

This is one of the best contemporary art museums Ive ever been to! The exhibitions were great. They were put together/displayed in a way that made sense using the interesting space of the museum. I loved nearly every piece I saw; they all added so much to the overall exhibition. I would definitely recommend this to anyone who likes contemporary art; you wouldnt want to miss it.

This is a free museum and made me think of the European commitment to accessible art. The staff are friendly and helpful, and the art is either moving or at least thought-provoking. Be sure to bring cash so you can help keep the efforts going.

Thought provoking, contemporary, eye opening and FREE. Im not an art expert but I love the work they show here. Its always different, accessible and multi media. I frequently go. Bring cash for the donation box. (They dont ask but I like to leave a little something )

What a nice place. Its extremely small as far as are work to view it will only takes about 20 min or less, however its very nice and its FREE.. go visit

It was not what I was expecting. Went there because my daughter wanted to go. I was not expecting the type of place it is. It is not for everyone. The museum caters to the gay community. Nonetheless I continued with an open mind. Interesting place for those that are interested in that sort of thing, informative to say the least.

It was very well put together. I learned a lot. I went with friends who wanted to go. And i had the better time.

This museum is pretty small, but the exhibition I went to see had a lot. By that I mean there was a lot to read (even thick comic books) and several videos to watch. It took a while to get through everything despite it not being particularly large. I would say that it was a little too much to stand and read, and it would be nice to start a video when you approach it, rather than missing large portions before it restarts.We also took part in an ornament making event. They had a nice little room downstairs for it, and it was a good experience.

This place is amazing. Always free, pay what you think its worth. The art in here inspires thought and discussion, so visit with an open mind and bring a friend!

This is a free hotel with thought provoking art. The gallery spans two stories, but i would have enjoyed more exhibitions. I enjoyed this museum and would definitely visit again. The museum store has alot of different trinkets to pick from.

Its free admission but small so you cant really hate on it too much. They a open studio when we went and spend a hour decorating a bag. Worth your time if you are around the area and like weird art.

The exhibit was a disappointment to me as an art lover and educator. Not at all what I expected. While I believe in self expression through art and I believe in the plight expressed, some things should remain private, there should be some level of decorum, and I definitely would not recommend taking any children or teens.

I went with a group of friends and had no clue what I was getting into. The setting is very open and casual, but I left changed. Taking the broad themes of prison, illegality, and incarceration and presenting them in such a wide variety of mediums (some paintings, some movies, some music, comic books, walls to scratch on, last meal sculptures) made them not only digestible for someone with little background knowledge, but also deeply interesting. The art in the bottom floor was just as amazing, and the intricate detail in each piece made me feel like I could get lost for hours. I recognize that the exhibits change around, but I have full faith that every next ones are gonna be just as wowing.

This place is such a fun place to visit. Its not enormous, but it is large enough to spend a couple of hours getting to enjoy some really unique exhibits.There is a large room upstairs that featured a San Antonio themed collection when i most recently went. There was such a variety of beautiful sculptures, paintings, and even video pieces. Im not going to pretend Im familiar with these artists or follow their work, but there was such a nice variety of things to see, and it was really cool.The much smaller downatairs level had an exhibit from Cary Liebowitz (sorry if it is misspelled) and it was awesome. Manuscripts, paintings, sculptures, even decorated plates were everywhere downstairs and they were so vibrant and interesting. I could have easily spent more time down there and would like to go back again before the collection moves on.The building itself is in Montrose, so parking is a little hard to come by, but the museum is easy to find and the admission is free. Its not very far off the Metro Rail line, and once youre there you are near other museums, plenty of restaurants, and other entertainment.If you are like me and havent been to a lot of museums or are intimidated by art because you are unfamiliar with it, this is a great place to start out. No snobbery, no paintings that are 300 years old created by someone half a world away. Friendly folks work here and the pieces are really accessible. Go here and check it out!

Houstons Contemporary Arts Museum is soothing to my soul and raises my blood pressure at the same time. You never know what youll get in this box of cracker jacks and I love it.

Very nice layout, ran by donation but if you can’t I suggest getting something from the gift shop.

On the edge of the Houston Museum District is a interesting, very modern looking stainless steel clad, slightly out of place parallelogram shaped building designed by architect Gunnar Birkerts and opened in 1972. There are 2 good sized gallery spaces which provide ample space for the eight to ten exhibitions that the museum holds during the year. The spaces are well lighted and easily sub-divided for the requirements of each exhibit.There is plenty of free parking available a few hundred feet from the museum, and wonders of wonders, entrance to the museum is ALWAYS FREE.For those with children, I suggest you check out what exhibit is installed there when you want to visit. On occasion the subject of the exhibits are a bit edgy for young children. Check it out before walking in.

Really depends on the exhibit. The staff is great. A lot of times they have fun art projects for kids.It is a good idea to check the exhibit with the staff before you bring in kids. Sometimes the exhibits are not appropriate for young children.Free to get in but donations accepted.

Its just a complete waste of a nice building.. nothing really interesting to see to be honest. At least its free.. Just go to the fine art museum across the street..

A small museum in Houston. The exhibition of LGBTQ was so interesting.

I am from Louisiana and had no idea the artist gallary covered so much about Louisiana. Its a must-see event.

The museum was interesting. Its more for adult rather than children. However, if you do take the kids along they have interactive books. The kids can work through them as they learn about the art work. Probably will not return with my kids though.

I took my teenagers for some culture and light hearted fun. Great since its small and the pieces are always a great way to get conversation and fun, interesting statements. Perfect size to keep their interest, about an hour or so. Parking in the streets around the museum want hard to find. I told my boys it was a great first date option!

My all time favorite art museum. The exhibits are always thought provoking, really enjoy the rugged industrial look on the inside of the building aswell. My only complaint ever is that there is sometimes an odd smell in the building. Cant really describe it but its not too bothersome, just peculiar.

My friend and I went to this museum and were having a great time. That was until, somebody came up and said The rules state, you can NOT wear your bag on both shoulders! I was disappointed to say the least.

I am glad that the MFA is building a huge contemporary art wing. Now maybe this place can close or maybe transition into a coffeehouse. I do like the exterior but the shows are a real snooze. Dont wast your time.

Fabulous collection and special activities

Very cool place with thought provoking exhibits. Theres only two floors, so a limited collection of items on display. However, its nice that many of their pieces are interactive. Its good to visit because its free but Its not something Id spend money on. Could spend less than an hour there. Parking is free along side roads. Gift shop is super cool with unique finds.

Went there as a guest to my friend Nick LoveLaces date with his boyfriend whiLe he came back to Houston from SeattLe for a visit. Dont reaLLy recaLL much of the art, in fact not a singLe piece is standing out at this time.

Installation always change so u can go ever few weeks and see something new. sometimes the art is a little blah and boring but its a matter of personal taste and perspective.

Two floors of contemporary art exhibits that change and present art using a variety of mediums including artwork, videos, audio and interactive displays! Free and open to the public!

A relatively small space, but nevertheless very warm and interesting contemporary museum. Street level consists of a single space display and lower level a museum shop with a smaller space. During the visit a well curated display San Antonio was taking place. Warmly recommended for anyone interested in what is going on this part of the country.

I love the CAM. Ive never seen a bad exhibit here, but Ive seen a lot of good ones.

Compared to Houstons museums this one was a let down for me. Beautiful building leads to an expectation of some fascinating exhibits but it lacks that expectation. I was here 15 minutes when I normally spend hours at a museum.
