This was one of my recent discoveries nearby the Hilton Head island area. I was able to find this park and the address with the use of a GPS device and Google maps. The park has plenty of parking and they can accommodate small and large vehicles. The park has plenty of lights and I felt very stay while I was visiting late evening during the dusk hours. It has historic exhibits and plenty of signs, reflecting of the unique history of this park. I would highly recommend it to friends and family members who want to learn more about the African American history in this region of the state.

If you want to learn about the rich history of Hilton Head, you have to stop by this park. Enough said. Beautiful pavilion on the marsh, a bench commemorated by a plaque written by Toni Morrison, and a wooded pathway that leads to a natural, more secluded beach.

When people said I needed to come here. THEY WERE RIGHT!! There’s so much history about this place. I love to see all the history, and what the freedman aka: Slaves has to do to get here. And what they had to go through when the lived here. It is truly a amazing historical place. And to see it in such good shape just makes me so proud. To see that they care so much about the history here. It really is “We’re Freedom began.” But all this begs the question. Where did they all go?

Very interesting and important information is displayed. Finished, recreated historical buildings would be more appreciated since they lacked walls in the back. I also saw some people cutting fan palm leaves to take with them. Not good. Maybe signs are needed about not taking vegetation samples.

This is an amazing developing historical site with history dating back to before the emancipation . Freemen (not slaves)and their families lived in this town, given wood and tools with which to build their homes, a praise house, tool shed etc. Fishing nearby for food and living off the land. School teachers were brought down from the north to teach the children.Harriet Tubman played an important role with this town on Hilton Head Island as well. 1862-1864Imagine!!

Any visit to Hilton Head Island South Carolina, would not be complete without visiting this historic site. This site has a story as old and as rich as the soil you walk on. It is truly a testament to the sacrifice, resilience and perseverance of this nation’s very first freedmen, and thanks to The Mitchelville Preservation Project, today, anyone visiting Hilton Head can relive it.These new citizens industrially built homes with neatly arranged streets, elected their own officials, developed laws, built an economy, and implemented mandatory education for their children. It has been suggested, that Mitchelville was so successful, that the famous Underground Railroad freedom fighter, Harriet Tubman, was sent to Hilton Head to see this bustling town, so she could share the story of Mitchelville’s self-governed success with future freedmen towns.Situated on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, Mitchelville is a jewel of history and folklore within the Gullah/Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor that forms the roots of the African-Americans contribution to the heritage of freedom in America. The sites trees grow right up to the beach and there is some grass in the water that creates beautiful morning sunrises, and dramatic evening sunsets. It’s a great place for little explorers who like to look for shells, driftwood and animal tracks in the sand.Hilton Head Island may be famous for golf and romantic vacation getaways, but it is also a place that possesses remarkable historic sites.
