The staff were very friendly and helpful. The exhibits were informative and interesting. A lot of the artifacts were from local historical sites. They have a large selection of books related to this region that cover different time periods in their gift shop.

While small in stature this museum is pack with gems. Currently showing is a Civil War Journey by Private Robert Kox Sneden. These are drawings by the Private while he was imprisoned. They are very good for being just from memory. Staff members Mike is fantastic and informative, Miss Kay the gift shop staffer is a long time Hampton resident, I purchased three items which she wrap with care as if she was carry them away herself. One other thing Id like to thank Mike for the late lunch recommendation the Fish was delicious.

Absolutely outstanding! Like Hampton itself (seemingly overshadowed by heavyweight colonial history in the region), the museum may not be terribly large, but it has a thorough, well-curated set of exhibits to narrate the fascinating history of Hampton, highlighting particularly those things that put it on the map: the 1619 arrival of the first Africans in America at Point Comfort; the Gibraltar of the Chesapeake at Fort Monroe, which remained in Union hands through the Civil War and fatefully was a refuge for runaway slaves, making emancipation a war objective; the Reconstruction establishment of what is today Hampton University (alma mater of Booker T. Washington); and, the story of the mathematician women at Langley Research Center who helped literally launch America into the Space Age, now more widely known about from the movie Hidden Figures. Hampton can hold its own amidst other historical towns in Tidewater Virginia, and this museum does a wonderful job of showing and telling those important stories.

History of Hampton with lots of artifacts dating back to the native tribes who lived here when the European explorers arrived through today. Lots of reading. Could take you 30 minutes to an hour depending on how much you want to read. There are a few videos in the museum. Children might be bored. $5 admission. $4 with a AAA membership.

A small but very informative museum that teaches all about the history of Hampton. They don’t gloss over some of the more negative aspects of our history, but it’s taught in a family-friendly way. The staff is very knowledgeable as well and happy to answer any questions that may come up.

As we were in the city of Hampton recently. Had opportunity to visit the Museum here. Alot of information from the American Indians ,to the first African people who were enslaved here to civil war. There was an exhibit on the burning of the city of Hampton during the Civil War. Archeological finds as seen on display the were found over the years. So much to take in. Definitely would recommend

Micheal Cloonan or the older man with the glasses is the absolute worst tour guide ever, acted very discriminate towards me on my visit and assume negative things about when I said I was visiting the museum for my class and need a reciept or some type of proof of visit for my class. He told me that I was just come to get a receipt signed by an employee and just leave the museum without looking. I have never ever been spoken to like that and who is he to assume such thing to someone he doesnt even know. Im going to report this incident because he does not deserve to be in the role that he is in. I will never visit this museum or recommend this to any one ever again.

Its a nice museum detailing history of the city of Hampton. Its clean and the employees were nice. HOWEVER, there was a caucasiam man who worked there who told my son (who is African American) there is a black exhibit upstairs. Keep in mind we were in the gift shop and we all were asking general questions about the museum. My son told him we are interested in all of the history of Hampton. It was offensive for someone to just assumed we were just interested in african American history.
