Its a very nice scenic place to walk around. Great exhibit inside the base too. I spent a whole day walking around here. The top of the base, you can walk here with your dogs. The graves are a pet cemetery. The landscape is taken care of but just be careful of the steep hills.

This museum is FREE & filled with amazing history. My 8 year old daughter loved it. We spent about 2 hours there and she kept wanting to see more. Fort Monroe is a must see and visit. I would suggest that afterwards if the weather is right swim outside the fort on the beaches. This is great place for families to spend the day, and pack a picnic.

The Casemate Museum at Fort Monroe is a very special place for many reasons. One being is that it is significant to local and national history. Two, its a great experience for free. Donations are optional and recommended and you will receive no pressure from anyone to do so. You can learn about the old Ironclads, Freedom Fortress, Tuskegee Airman, Emancipation Proclamation and many other historical exhibits. Fun, fun, fun!

The museum has been updated since the last time I was there. I was stationed at Fort Monroe in 1973 when it still was an active operation. I was one of the original people stationed here at the beginning of TRADOC headquarters. If you get a chance when visiting Yorktown or Williamsburg please visit this fort now that its no longer an active army base.

Great presentation of Fort Monroes extensive history going back more than 200 years. I go to Fort Monroe weekly but didnt realize so many things about the fort and its history. The museum provides a wealth of information including real artifacts that were actually utilized in combat during the forts active service. Went with a friend and enjoyed a great lunch and a delicious cappuccino at the Firehouse Cafe located inside the fort and in close proximity to the Casemate Museum. A truly enjoyable day out and an even deeper appreciation for Fort Monroe.

Visited here a few years ago and revisited with my Mom just a few days ago. LOTS of history and too much to list here. The Fort itself has a self-guided walking tour that lasts about 90 minutes. The Casemate Museum has been expanded and does a good job covering the history of the land from when the colonists started poking around to the modern period. I would suggest visiting it during comfortable weather AND having a good map. The signs in the area are good but there are some spots where a sign would have REALLY been nice. Of course, Lee once was stationed here before the Civil War and Jefferson was held here after the war. And we all know about good old General Butler. A must for anybody interested in Civil War history, American military history, OR African-American history

The walk around the fort was nothing spectacular. In fact, some of the names that people gave their pets are kind of offensive. As to one headstone specifically a little dismayed it still being up in this day and age. The museum itself however was an absolute pleasant surprise. Walked in the door not expecting much and spent a good hour going through it. Marvelous surprise

On my last visit to Fort Monroe, which is such a fantastic location for biking and walking...the weather turned windy and chill. I could have used the weather as reason to head home but instead chose to go inside the Casemate museum. Dont miss the chance to dwell briefly in another world. Immediately there is a mighty shift in energy between where you were and where you now are: secure, surrounded by massive stonework, imagining what it was like to be part of this time in history.

Took a visit to Fort Monroe and first stop was the Casemate Museum. They have a lot of exhibits and history on display. Im a history nut (among other things) and could have easily spent many more hours reading and enjoying all that was offered. Theyve expanded the exhibits and added more of late. No entry fee required and theres a quant gift shop at the end with knick knacks and souvenirs. Definitely worth a visit, and a revisit.

5 stars for the fort and the casement museum coverage of the beginning of the end of slavery, but just 1 star for coverage of the beginning of slavery with the arrival of the first Africans in Virginia in 1619. Hopefully the new visitor center will address this glaring shortcoming. The fort became a national monument in 2011 for these two reasons and yet today, 8 years later, coverage of 1619 is nearly absent from the monument. Why?

The Fort itself is certainly worth the visit with its very cool moat. The kids will love driving through. Dont go through the main gate, the side ones are more narrow and more fun. if you are willing to climb up the ramparts explore the pet cemetery that literally wraps around the entire fort. These military families certainly loved their pets! For many the actual museum may be of only limited interest (but air conditioned!) unless a true history buff, but we enjoyed it. Edgar Allen Poe served there as well as Robert E. Lee. And the role it played as a Union strong hold in the civil war I felt was the most interesting aspect. And its free and easy to get to. Plus there is a fantastic casual sea food restaurant across the way called Dead Rise with a crab cake sandwhich to die for. So if the kids get bored, you can leave and eat and have cold drink while looking out over the marina. A great way to spend a few hours.

We had a couple hours to drive from Williamsburg, VA up to Fort Monroe on the recommendation from some locals who indicated that with the spate of recent hot weather this museum was indoors. Fort Monroe is loaded with history and pre-dates even the founding of the country as this was an important area in early settlements such as Jamestown and Williamsburg. That said, even though the Casemate museum is primarily focused on Fort Monroe, the exhibit starts with the earlier history which is a nice touch. The museum takes advantage of the long history by touching on many historical eras, such as early settlements, Revolutionary War, War of 1812, Civil War, World Wars, later schools, and a few others. Of great historical and local history is the focus on African Americans and how Fort Monroe took in contraband and became a place of refuge for those escaping the clutches of dreadful enslavement. The features helping explain General Butlers role, the slave census map, and many other well-done exhibits really are top-notch and well worth the time to read through. The museum also highlights a few other points worth mentioning such as Edgar Allan Poes time there, and Robert E. Lees connection, and infamously the incarceration of Jefferson Davis. There is also a few exhibits on the defenses and artillery school which was housed at one time at Fort Monroe. Spend a couple hours at the museum, buy a gift or book in the well-stocked gift shop, and drop a few dollars in the bin at the end - I think you will have found it worthy of such an offering. We also just enjoyed driving around the base itself, which was shut down in 2011 and enjoyed the views and general atmosphere before heading home.

The guard HARASSED me. I went to this museum with my boyfriend and his parents on our way to fort monroe beach. I was wearing shorts, a swimsuit top that covered my whole front and torso, and a jacket to cover the open back on my swimsuit. Not too long after I walked in, the guard came up to me and asked me to cover myself because my shorts were too short. They were normal length shorts that covered me and for a free museum near the beach, it was normal attire. I didnt want to tie my jacket around my waist like she asked me to because I knew the open back would be the problem next so I pulled my jacket down a bit since it was long and baggy on me. Less than a minute later, she approached me again telling me that she cant let me walk around like that and that people were complaining. Nobody approached her after we walked in. Nobody complained. She said I was violating the dress code but there was no dress code posted. She made it up. I just walked out because I wasnt going to stay there and be harassed. It was humiliating and Im upset that I never got to see the museum because I was really looking forward to it.

Fort Monroe is a hidden treasure of the Hampton Roads area. Both the National Park Service and Virginia State are tasked with administering the various parts of the park. The Casemate Museum of Fort Monroe is run by the Virginia state park authority. It is well presented and self guided most days. Next year, August 2019, Fort Monroe will be cerebrating their 400 year anniversary.
