Awesome, beautiful, gorgeous, amazing rainbow of beauty. Mother nature took too long to make these and cut them out, perfect! Extremely huge sandstone rocks that are accessible to some brave. Trails are somewhat flat to access the tops of the rocks for safety. There are extreme drop offs that can be 100% fatal if not taken seriously. I can still say, no matter how dangerous our mother can be, she sure knows how to paint the beauty from her heart.

This is the second time that Ive been here and it is absolutely stunning! The first time I explored towards the right of the bluffs and the second time towards the left. Towards the left you can totally climb down and around the rocks. I would suggest wearing good shoes. This park is open 24 hours a day and there is no fee for day use.

Great first stop and last stop for a day trip at the monument. Overlooks lava flow with view for miles. Very large areas to scramble over bare rock and explore some of the nooks a ways away from the parking lot.

WORTH THE STOP!! The cliffs are beautiful. You park and walk like 50 feet to get to the cliffs. Also has a nice clean latreen - no water though. Kid friendly if you stay away from edges. Weather permitting easy to spend an hour exploring.

It was a beautiful Sunday to adventure out. Warm weather, sunny and clouds provided a nice overcast. If you hike, use AllTrails because the trail isnt always clearly marked.

So Beautiful!!! I never knew it was there. We saw the sign on our way back from Quemado Lake, and it was a spontaneous stop that is not regretful at all! People dont realize that there are relaxing places out there! Make it an effort to enjoy the earth!

Spectacular viewpoint within El Malpais National Monument. Walk up from the parking area to see the panoramic view of the vast lava field badlands below. Mount Taylor, one of the four sacred mountains that delimit Dinetah/Navajoland, is prominent to the North.

Sandstone bluffs is a beautiful spot to stop by while you are in El Malpais. The road that leads to it is just about a mile from the rangers station and after a 5 minute drive you will arrive at the bluffs with a nice 360 degree panoramic view of the area. On the north side is the expansive view of the lava field and to the northeast you can see Mt. Taylor. We also stopped by last winter while at El Malpais and it presented a different, snowy landscape. You can hike around the edge of the bluffs which is maybe a mile or so or just sit on the giant rocks and soak in the view. Its one of the best spots for sunset around this area!

This is in the El Malipais national monument. Very beautiful overlook with unique sandstone rocks. Be warned with small kids: steep drop off with no railings and treacherous terrain. Made me a bit nervous letting my 2 yr old roam free. Otherwise, worth a stop and Im sure gorgeous at sunset!

Some sweeping, breathtaking scenery can quite easily be found in this area. Located within the El Malpais National Monument, youll find the road for this location just a bit past the Ranger Station. Its a mile up a gravel road, and then youll come across some free parking. From here, you can easily walk to a few different vantage points thatll provide some amazing views of the surrounding landscape. Perfect spot to stretch your legs and take some great photos. As far as I could tell, there isnt much in the way of trails here, so get back in your car and drive a bit further if youre wanting more of a hike. While theres only the one, there is a picnic bench located near here if youd like to stop and eat. Great stopping point if youre visiting Malpais!

Amazing views in every direction of the El Malpais lava flows and surrounding area. Upper area open to exploring with amazing finds around each corner. An abandoned homestead can also be found in the upper area. Watch for loose rocks and the steep drop-offs. The base of the bluffs offer more hiking where you can find small arches and petroglyphs. Look out for Cryptobiotic soil... knobby black crust on the ground. This is actually a living community of algae, lichens, mosses, fungi, and bacteria. Take hundreds of years to grow and provides stability in easily eroded soils, increases water infiltration and fertility in the soil.

It is an awesome place to go, I visited this place on chirstmas, no wonder the place was quite cold, but one will never want to miss the beautiful creation of mother nature. One can see the mountains covered with snow at the end of horizon. It is unbelieveable that the whole mountain was a result of volcanic eruption.

You have to drive over a dirt road to get to the Bluffs, and then theres not a lot to see. The road takes you to the top of the Bluffs, where you can see lava flows that are thousands of years old and partially grown over. There are restrooms by the parking lot. Very little shade.

Its an awesome site to behold looking down the sheer cliffs and into the lava fields. 15 miles north you can see tiny white dots that are vehicles on I-40. The whole area of El Malpais offers a free campground, backcountry backpacking, hiking thru the lava fields, road side photo ops, and constant beauty and wonder.
