For a university gym, Southwest Rec is super nice. For a go-to local gym, still extremely nice. However, if you arent a student, this SWRC may not be for you. Typically busy during the normal rush hours, but also open for a large part of the day.

I have been coming to this gym for several years and it is still in like new condition! I may workout maybe once or twice a semester or maybe its a couple times per week. I cant remember because I am super stoked by the shape I am getting in. All I know is that I go in the morning and when Im done, I feel great. Normally when I finish, I have a big smile on my face and the sun shines down saying Today is a good day . I then say something like Thank you sun. I appreciate all that energy you beam to the Earth and stuff. This gym has made me a happier person. It makes me happier to know my student fees pay for such a fine establishment and since I am paying for it, I might as well use it. It also has a large assortment of equipment to use and it has an indoor basketball court! It is far superior to the gym in my hometown. We only had buckets filled with sand and tires and car parts. I think they were going for primitive chic. Now that I think about it. I think they were just a junk yard that had a crudely painted a sign out front saying JYM. Junk Yard Mechanics. But yeah, the Rec Center is great! Give it a try and get an upgrade from the JYM.

I love this Gym. As an experienced Cross-fitter, I was super excited to learn that there was an Olympic lifting center in the building. Yurgen is the main guy that certifies people to lift and train in the specialty area, and was very accommodating of my very busy schedule and took time out of his schedule to personally carry out my aptitude test. He was incredibly knowledgeable, and I highly recommend his coaching. Overall, I am extremely impressed by this fitness center. Would absolutely recommend it to a friend.

Nice facility and good teachers for the classes. My only complaint is that the rooms are too cold for the yoga classes. Otherwise, they are good for the more sweat-intensive classes like cycling and center barre.

Review №12

My only complaint with the southwest recreation center is how they managed their equipment budget. Duirng peak hours (usually mwf from about 4 to 8) you could be waiting 20 minutes for a bench to open up, whilst around 20 treadmills and 2 basketball courts remain unused. Admittedly, theyre may have been concious decisions againts putting in a larger freeweights section that I simply may not understand. That being said, this gym offers an immense variety of equipment and is kept incredibly clean.

This place is enormous, and with that, its a bit of a madhouse. There are so many people, which makes it loud, and the front desk can get packed if you need something simple. Lots of things to do here, but dont expect it to ever really be empty.

Well organized gym with a great assortment of machines. You should never run into a problem of machines being filled. That coupled with everything (for the most part) free for students really gets one excited to go and get fit. Wish there was non-decal parking though. All in all a great gym!

This is a cosmopolitan university city where different cultures, religions, and backgrounds cohexist. Why arent services available year around for everyone to enjoy? Why is parking not available game days regardless of the sport? Costumer care by UF to its own students and staff is often bellow expectation.

Great recreational facility for a quick workout. The place gets crowded pretty often but that could be bittersweet because on one hand I want the US to become more healthy, but on the other hand I want a squat rack to work on these chicken legs. Overall the staff is cool and very laid back. Im no activist, but I would definitely sign a petition to add hot tubs in the locker rooms.

I was a member for a year, and pretty unimpressed with the gym as an option for UF staff for reasons of price, exercise options, and layout. Price: when calculating the monthly cost, make sure to factor in that the gym is closed for about a week at the beginning of each semester, so youre paying for 3 weeks you cant use. This pushes the price closer to the high-end gyms in town rather than the mid-level. It also throws me personally off my routine. Guest passes are $10 apiece and you have to buy them ahead of time, which is quite expensive and inconvenient, so if you plan to ever bring someone with you, youre much better off at a different facility.Exercise options: the exercise classes require that you sign up ahead of time, and only open 24 hours in advance. Most of the better classes are totally booked in less than an hour, which makes it hard to get into a consistent class routine. They should have an option to sign up for a month at a time, so you can develop a routine. Or, just have more classes if theyre that popular.Layout/facility: The equipment is really nice and new, but I found the layout inconvenient. The free weights are arranged in a line from lightest to heaviest, so people at the heavy end of the weight benches end up spending a lot of time walking halfway across the gym to get and return the correct weights, which really slows down weight bench turnover. Additionally, they should institute some sort of whiteboard signup for the benches and popular machines. If youre there at peak time, you can end up standing around waiting for upwards for 15 minutes for a bench or machine. Undergraduates are also prone to sitting on benches/machines just texting, or working out in groups of 5+, so it can take them forever to vacate a machine.Overall, if youre paying out of pocket for the UF gym, I think youve got a lot of better options in town. Leave this one for the students.

I was here when this gym got renovated and man it was swanky! Even on Friday nights you could still find a cardio machine to use. The weight room now that’s another story. I remember having to wait in line 10-15 minutes to go in the weight area because it would get overcrowded. Has 6 basketball courts and racquetball courts. Can be difficult to play on at times. Especially when ref sports is using them. The main reason I’m giving it a 5 star is because when this place first opened it was helluh fancy.

First time here, huge facility. Nice people, helpful and willing to help me negative and get info about the place. Indoor 1/9 mile track upstairs, cardio and little pull-up square/gymnastic ring/TRX upstairs. Kettlebell upstairs. Cardio downstairs as well huge weight room and 6 full courts, racquetball and other activity rooms. Wasnt as busy apparently (staff said) but there was still plenty people in weight room. Rest of gym was more vacant.

Review №30

Its passable as a gym but there are a number of issues:1. The weight room is completely segregated from the cardio area and tends to be full of groups of steroid happy frat boys that make inappropriate comments to the women using the facilities. I should be able to do a leg press or squats without leers, grunting and comments. More effort needs to be made to give women access to racks, etc. without being harassed.2. The online registration system for courses is extremely limiting and doesnt allow you to cancel without calling in. Two out of the three times that I have called in, the staff did not in actuality cancel the class for me. This resulted in a block for 5 days. Why not redo the website so that people can register and cancel classes themselves? That way Id get an automatic ticket to prove Ive canceled and youd have less people to employ that dont do their jobs.3. Phone etiquette is a thing- teach it to your staff. Hello, this is_________,. How may I help you? Not, Hey. ....uhuh....ok. I know they are predominantly undergrads, but youre being paid for this so act like it.4. The hours change frequently due to football games and school breaks or holidays, however if youre a graduate student this means youve paid an activity fee for a service that you dont have full access to as we still work on campus through semester holidays. I dont care if people are playing football that day- I should have access to a service Ive paid for. If you deny me access, I should be refunded.5. Cleaning staff is scheduled to clean the main areas while they are in use. This is distracting and can be dangerous as the floor next to a treadmill is mopped while Im on the treadmill. Its a slipping hazard, not to mention having someone with a large stick come within a foot of you without warning and from behind you while running can be dangerous. The gym is closed for 4 hours minimum per 24 hours period- can they not clean it then?
