This was a beautiful place to visit. We went on a day where they had reenactment characters which explained more and added to the richness of the scene. Grounds were amazing, restroom were clean and walk around was just about .5miles. You leave with a sense of amazement and awe to the size of the battle and the stories of the people. A must visit.

My daughter and I went to this, Fredericksburg national military battlefield and did the three quarter mile walking loop. First stop the museum store for the park stamp for our books. There were park guides if you wanted to go on a guided tour. Even though I am disabled it was a walk I could do. There is a uphill climb to the top about halfway around the walk. Must see the statue of the Soldier Angel, the Confederate sergeant who even thought being fired upon went out and gave water to wounded union soldiers. The house you can still see the bullet holes especially if you look through the windows. The national Cemetery has over 20,000 union dead with only about 3000 known names the rest are unknown soldiers.

Great way to spend the afternoon. A humbling historical experience. Lots of placards to read along a well maintained path. Neatly manicured cemetery and a quaint little gift shop with friendly staff. If you are interested in helping out or volunteering, inquire about it in the gift shop.

We showed up to find a Saturday of historic characters at stations about the park to describe and interpret the Battle of Fredericksburg. 5 stars, particularly because the ranger who brought the event to fruition (crud, I didnt get his name? He offered a frank discussion with our group about respecting the efforts of the Confederate soldiers while not idolizing the leaders who wanted to protect their investments in slavery.) Just a great unplanned experience that really exceeded the expectations!

The National Park Service is doing the best it can to maintain this site. Too much of the city development encroached on Maries heights before they could preserve the feel of how open the area was that the union army attempted to attack. Bothered by locals walking dogs. Seems disrespectful on the battlefield so close to the cemetery.

The Fredericksburg Battlefield bookstore is open but, due to COVID-19 (August 2020), the visitors center is still closed until further notice. However, the walking trail and, a little further down the road, the driving trail are open with informative posts along the way. Did you know that only Union soldiers were buried in Federal graves? And of the 15,000 Union soldiers who died here, 13,000 are unknown? The Confederate soldiers were often buried with the help of a ladies organization. Of note, there is a single bathroom next to the bookstore and parking behind and next to the (closed) visitors center facing the road.

I recommend stopping here before you start your tour. There is an excellent film that gives a good overview of how the town played a part in the battle. There is a $2 fee to see the film, but the money goes to the NPS, so I didn’t mind paying it. The staff was very helpful, too. We had an ancestor who fought at Fredericksburg and the staff researched his unit and told us where he was during the battle so we could walk in his foot steps. Very cool!

This battlefield lies within 10-15 miles of battles which were fought later in the war (Chancellorsville in May 1863, the Wilderness Campaign a year later in 1864). It’s probably the smallest of the three bit not lacking in importance or poignancy. In these fields the Union Army charged up against the Confederate defenses behind the Sunken Road, and several cannons which were situated on Marye’s Heights. If you walk up to the heights you can get a sense of how suicidal the charge was that day .... Many brave men in the Union gave their lives in following orders to charge against the Confederate defenses .....the included pictures show many of the highlights of the battlefield....Even though modern structures cover the area the Union charged across, one can still get a sense of how commanding the Confederate position was that day....As General Lee watched the carnage atop Marye’s Heights he is said to have remarked“It is good that war is so terrible lest one would grow fond of it”This battlefield represents another sad day in American History.

This is a must see for any history buff. You can walk the battlefield and see clearly how the south would hold the upper hand simply based on position. It must have been hell for the north on that day... Although they won round two on the very same site some years later. You need about 2 hours to see it fully.

A fine and knowledgeable staff. An expectation fulfilled. Rangers that knew their history, communicated well, answered questions clearly. A somber, sad history of a Nation divided on a battlefield where many brave souls fought and breathed their last. Great for a short (2 hours or so) trip to learn about the Battle of Fredericksburg. The museum is small but packed with information and relics while the battlefield really gives you a sense of what happened, despite being in the middle of the city. The battlefield itself has good walking trails and stops among the main area. If youre up for it, drive down to Prospect Hill to get a sense of how big the battle was and see some earthworks/trenches.

Well told story of a bloody civil war battle. Great perspectives obtained via museum info and hiking trails as well as the driving tour. Spend a half a day or more and really dig into some history as well as some of the hard lessons learned by the Union soldiers during the first battle! Staff was very helpful and informative. Museum shop on site as well as a junior ranger program for the kids (more suitable for 4th grade and above in my opinion because of some of the question complexities).

Its rather small, but thats more to do with the battlefield being in the middle of a town than anything else. Had a very nice tour my one of the ranger interns. She explained the strategy and the battles place within the larger context, which was refreshing, as opposed to the traditional, antiseptic, God, guns, & guts style.

We found a wealth of information in this center, and our 10 year old grandson earned his Junior Park Ranger patch by completing the workbook about the Battle of Fredericksburg. The video and exhibits helped to explain the key aspects of the military and the suffering of all concerned. The gift shop was terrific, and the clerk helped us to select books on a 10 year olds level. Many thanks to the volunteers and park rangers for a memorable experience.
