So much history in such a small place. Only took an hour and an half to see everything. Personally I would have stayed longer to read more, but my husband who isnt big on museum was ready to go after an hour. Handicap accessible, public parking garage right behind it. Also very close walking distance to the park and shops in the area.

I cant believe Ive lived in Northern Virginia for 3.5 years and had not been to Frederick, Maryland yet....this place is awesome. My husband and I love all the Revolutionary and Civil War history in this area. The National Museum of Civil War Medicine did not disappoint, considering this museum was started from a private collection, I was really impressed with the size and detail of the exhibits. I also really liked the soldiers perspective provided through letters....one soldier whose letters were on display was from my homestate of Maine; so that made an immediate connection for me. The staff are super friendly and one was dressed for the period and really knowledgeable on modern medicines derivations from the Civil War....such as the advent of hospital campuses. Definitely check this place out the next time you are in Frederick. Oh, and look for a Groupon to save a few bucks. Then go across the street to the Tenth Ward Distillery to try some delicious cocktails. :-)

Such a cool museum. Its not the largest but every area was so well laid out and had a ton of great information. There were some interactive things for kids but probably not the best places for little little kids. There was no else there when I was there so kids couldve ran around quite a bit with out disturbing anyone. Speaking of disturbing, you well see some gruesome things. It is about war and people legs and arms being taken off. I happen to like that stuff. I was driving across country and stopped at all sorts of places and this was a great place.

What an amazing museum! The level of information and detail on display here is truly staggering. Multiple levels of exhibits, fascinating stories and some interactive displays make this a must-see when in the Frederick area. I found it via Google Maps and Im quite glad I did, for it was both interesting and educational. The period-dressed docents were helpful in the extreme and enthusiastic sharers of information. I especially found the exhibit about the first hospital ship to be totally engrossing. Theres enough information here for another visit! Well done folks, quite well done!

This is a small museum in the middle of a street filled with restaurants and shops. There are two small floors with a few exhibits. We spent about an hour walking through the exhibits of surgical equipment, old-time pharmacy bottles, and mannequins as we learned about civil war medicine. There are a few costumed docents filled with information wandering about on each floor providing information. It was a little pricey $9, but a nice respite from the oppressive heat..

This is a small museum but it is very well laid out and very informative. You walk through each stage of a soldiers life through camp to hospital and the impact on their life after the war. It includes some information on African Americans, Women, and childrens roles in the war. Had some info on vet care and dental care as well. They have a large selection of books as well in the gift shop that are hard to find.

A great perspective on what the tragic conditions of the Civil War contributed to the revolution of medicine, nursing, and the concept of hospital care in our nation, not to mention prosthetic devices and restoring the injured to service/employment. Unimposing from the outside, this 2 story museum is beautifully organized, with an excellent diversity of exhibits, following the Civil War medical developments by time and subject matter. Theyve managed to create displays that engage both children (shorter plaques, hands-on exhibits, guess the answer panels, a scavenger hunt), and adults (longer information, lots of letter excerpts, some pretty unusual and grim photos). The museum is located right in downtown Frederick, with an inexpensive parking garage right behind it, and multiple tea shops, restaurants, vintage/thrift shops, specialty chocolate/toy/comic/gift shops surrounding it. We meant to spend 1 hour in the museum, and instead spent almost 3 hrs without realizing it!!! My kids never even complained! Its that good, lol!

This historic museum in Frederick Maryland is a must see for those who are interested in the history of medicine in the United states around the civil war time. It offers a great look in to how medical treatment works in the 1850 and in to the future. How the civil war helped in coming up with new ways of doing things and a better understanding of the human body and diseases that attack it. The exhibits are well layed out and very interesting, even if medicine is not your forte. I highly recommend this museum for everyone.

Informative, interesting, and presented very well, both in layout of the exhibits and the exhibits themselves. The museum explores the far reaching effects of the medicine at the time, the changes the Civil War brought in medicine, and how that changed the course of both military medicine practices and medicine for the general public. Though not a museum a child will find terribly engaging, adults at least vaguely interested in the subject will enjoy a stop here.

As long as its medical history and medical practices of the Civil War time that youre interested in, this is a terrific place to go. Among other things, it outlines how the triage system of Battlefield care actually came about, and how the Civil War was where American medical practices really got their foot in the door as far as how to take care of wounded from wartime activities. Not expensive, very historic, well done and worth the trip.

Very, very educational and interesting. Im so glad we found this museum in downtown Frederick. Its a hidden gem. Adults are $9.50 to get in and worth every penny of it. We spent 3 hours in this small museum so dont let the size fool you. They sell really cool souvineers from books to socks to beer. I got some violet (flower) flavored candy and its honestly some of the BEST hard candy Ive ever had in my 41 years. The background audio adds an additional layer of richness to the experience. This is not merely informational. You cannot help but walk away knowing so much more than you ever expected. The details of the life-sized diaramas pull you into the time and place of each setting. Any visit to one of the many local battlefields should be followed up with a visit here. It shows the development of various civil rights beginning. You are able to see the past and present compaired in a vast area of different areas. The tent in the one picture is, according to one of the staff, the last remaining tent used during the Civil War.There are some semi-graphic images or items that may not be suitable for young children. I would definitely recomend it for anyone intersted in the medical field or interested in gaining/ teaching an appreciation for how much life has changed and what we so quickly take for granted.
