I’ve been going to Grasshopper since I first got into house music back around 2013. Love this place. Even though I’m 28 and don’t get to go as often Grasshopper Underground will always have a special place in my heart. This place brings back so many happy memories. I love the intimate basement feel. Awesome upbeat music. Was so happy to get to come back last Friday shortly after they opened back up and I missed it! I live further away now but worth every penny of the expensive Uber to get there. I’ll be back!

I started coming here back in 2012 because it was a fun spot that featured many talented House music artists from all around the world. This used to be one of my favorite weekend spots because the crowd and parties used to be so intimate. Not to mention I met so many of my favorite artists because of this place.Unfortunately, this has completely changed ever since new ownership took over. They don’t bring in any decent house music artists any more. The crowd isn’t the same anymore, most of the regulars I knew are gone. Owner is also extremely rude to the patrons. In fact he has completely disrespected the house music scene and has done a disservice for this community by not sticking with Grasshopper’s original stigma.RIP to the Grasshopper I once knew. It’s sad to see this once great venue get run into the ground.

Horrible Customer SerivceBought a ticket for will call. Arrived to club with them charging more than double (but w/e I have a ticket already). Wait in line for half an hour with people who do not have tickets yet. Bouncer #1 says to go in. Bouncer #2 turns around and asks me to step away (then heads inside). Thats the reason I was denied entry. Bouncer #1 denied me because bouncer #2 said so. I was allowed not talk to bouncer #2 or management. Not sure if racial profiling or I looked like someone else. A bit humiliating and pathetic for a dude who was outside for a few seconds to power trip on a random dude. Not fun to explain to friends who were already inside.Update:Attempting to reach Grasshopper...- They do not respond to Facebook messages- Their Contact Us on website does not work- They do not answer phonePros:Grasshopper books many good actsCons:Crowded (you better hope it isnt hot and humid out)ExpensivePrice at door sky rockets

This is one of the best clubs in Metro Detroit. Perhaps, they are the only one who bring well known artists from across the world to play really awesome music. I was really happy to see Nora En Pure, Atliens, and Eli & Fur at this venue. The club is truly underground, intimate, and has the world class Void sound system. The sound engineers have done their job really well because you can hear almost every beat if you stand right in front of the stage. Whats more interesting is the fact that you stand very close to the artist, so you can literally see how theyre playing their music. Otherwise, at big venues or music fests the artists are very far from you, and sometimes you cannot even see them.I forgot to mention, their bartenders are really cool. Drinks are a bit pricey. But overall, this place rocks!!! :)

Oh where do I even begin. The hopper is a Detroit staple great music intimate setting. Wanna feel like your partying with your crew in your basement like you’re back in college? This is the spot. Good prices good drinks and Troy makes sure they bring the fire on the decks. I’ve seen some great artists here and made some great memories. Grasshopper will continue to be one of my favorite clubs in the area. If you like electronic music this is a spot you can’t miss.

One of my regular haunts. This place stands apart from the rest most notably for its outstanding sound system. If youre an audiophile this is probably the only place in Metro Detroit worthy of mention. Also due to the types of acts that come through there is rarely any type of disagreement between customers. Never had an issue with staff, theyre all great people.Simply put as long as youre a good person and act like an adult there isnt really any way to not enjoy the Grasshopper.

If you get drinks, youre betting on the mixed drinks, stick with the beer, or straight shots. Paid $32, for two double whiskeys sours and got two cups full of sour mix. A decent venue for Mark Farina also. Bonus is you can leave and come back (reentry)

I have been looking for a place like this for a while. I can certainly say that the grasshopper underground is your to-go bar that offers a variety of drinks but also offers the best house in music in the Detroit metro. I definitely recommend to give it a try or multiple, you will not be disappointed!

So the other night I was out with my friends, we went to karaoke, then orchid, and then made our way to Grasshopper. And I have to say grasshopper was the most disappointing experience Ive had in a long time. Lets start with the $20 cover, Id have been good with $5-$10 but $20 is outrageous. However, I was like okay whatever hopefully its worth it. Get downstairs, and its just a dirty basement with music so loud you can hear your heart developing hypertension. At least you could kinda shout at orchid if you wanted to communicate with someone. I would have given it 3-4 stars because I usually like basement bars ex. Deluxx Fluxx in Detroit, but $20 for a basement cesspool establishment, save your money and go anywhere else.

I gotta say , as someone who loves edm this is one of the worst places to experience the genre. They are under the impression (like most subpar edm clubs in the metro area ) that louder is better or somehow improves the quality of the music that is being played. That , on top of the $20 cover (really ?) and overpriced subpar drinks this place is not suited for people who enjoy the genre but for the kids who like to pay high prices for something they can get downtown for free (or at least less than $20)

Updated 7/8/2019Grasshopper is very unreliable. While some shows here have been enjoyable, multiple shows of musicians I really like have been ruined for me and my friends at this venue. One show I went to two of my friends left early it was so bad, and for one of them is was one of their favorite artists. The one thing this venue has going for it is that it books some really good artists. Unfortunately often even good artists cant overcome the rest of the issues. Heres a list of the issues, with the first ones being the things that are the worst:1) Audio quality is often very poor and okay at best. The only thing that sounds okay is the bass. The volume is usually turned up too loud causing distortion. Vocals sound like theyre playing in another building through a foot of concrete. Anything thats not bass has massive ringing as if its being played from the inside of a giant metal bell and the sound is extremely distorted. Sadly the music sounds best right at the top the stairs at the door of the venue.2) The venue is often too packed for its size and layout. You typically are standing shoulder to shoulder with people once the main act comes on. However on top of this 80% of the venue is a walking lane to/from the bars or bathroom, so you often have people bumping or pushing by you and you have to stop dancing and move out of the way constantly to let people by.3) The venue is located in downtown Ferndale, next to Royal Oak, which has a really young population similar to a college town. There are fun people, but also because of the location this place is frequented by bar hoppers and some frat like guys doing pullups on the I-beams as well. This leads to some people who are more interested with hooking up than the music, and Ive experienced multiple times where groups of guys and the girls arrive and feel entitled to push their way in front of you to take the spot you were in. It gets much better around 1:30 am when many of the people who arent there for the music have left.

This place seems to get worse rather than better to me! I visited recently for the first time in a few years and was appalled to see the multiple roped off V.I.P. sections! Is that really necessary for a dark basement club? The whiskey drinks we ordered were terrible. Tatsted as if the real thing was poured out and replaced with bottom shelf cheap stuff! The only bright spot for this one hour visit was the new location for the dj booth. Great idea to have it on the opposite side of the room.

How can you not love this club? The staff are really cool people. The bartenders make fabulous drinks and they are always super stoked to be there no matter what night. Always a great time, Grasshopper attracts a vibrant crowd by bringing in world class DJs. The friendly staff help to facilitate a great dance party every night. Come prepared to move because you wont want to sit down all night. Their sound system is incredible! Local tip: parking can be a challenge, especially during peak weekend hours so its best to Uber if you can. Also there are a ton of excellent restaurants within 2 blocks in case you need to fuel up first. I would recommend Public House, Pops Italian, Greenspace Cafe (veg) or Local Kitchen and Bar.

Im not a regular clubber, but if youre reading this, heres what you need to know:First, Parking: Theres plenty of it for a Saturday night, but only after 10pm its free until 7am in Ferndale. Dont show up after midnight witing for someone to pull out. Dont be surprised to find a few having fun in the backseat. Temporary walks to your car is fine, flash your wrist or X.Second, Saturday cover is $10, bring $20 more for drinks, coat check ($3...I know that guy somewhere), and tips. NO ATM inside, but you Can start tab if you know people or are a regular. Bar prices are surprisingly fair; better than Necto in Ypsi. Same dress code. Staff is diligent to serve you, if you dont know what its called, I recommend asking for a surprise.Third, the GU is COMPACT. Stands 200 easy, but couples start rolling in just after 11. Then it gets cramped, if youre into that kind of thing. This place is for FUN, get a drink or two down and let loose. Just like most clubs around here, many are here with friends, so dont try anything stupid, po pos are around the corner--aaannd just watched a couple get kicked out. Nothing unusual.Bathrooms are just as tiny, the line started about 1:30, time for a quick walk out.
