The Trans-Alaska Pipeline Viewpoint. I got a look at one of the worlds engineering marvels.Youll find info displays on the pipeline and an example of a pig, a device used to clean and inspect the inside of the pipeline. It took 70,000 workers and $8 billion of investment capital to build the famous 4 foot silver thread that snakes its way through 800 miles of Alaskan wilderness to reach the nations thirsty refineries, crossing mountain ranges, earthquake zones, permafrost, and rivers. Around 675 km of the pipeline is elevated (with 554 animal crossings), and outside Fairbanks is the place to see it. Every hour, more than a million dollars of black gold flows through it.

The sidewalk was completely filled with super deep snow that we had to swim through to find the end that was anchored so tightly into the ground that we couldnt even see inside the damn thing. I came all the way to Alaska for this? Not to my cartoon expectations.

Im delighted that I was able to observe a piece of work that was created by the hands of hard working men and women. Of course I filmed it and took pictures of the Alaskan pipeline. Too the men and women who designed and built this, plus with the viewing point being so astonishing I give the Alaska pipeline a five star.

Very easy to access; the physical pipeline can be seen from the parking area. Getting to the pipeline involves no steps. The path leading to it is paved and there is only a slight incline, making it possible for those with disabilities to get as close as they choose. The area appears clean and nicely maintained.Information about the pipeline and the site is provided along with relevant images. At least one of the informative signs can be read from a vehicle. There are no restroom facilities or picnic tables, and there is no shelter of any kind.

This was a usual Stopover for us during our Journey to the Arctic Circle from Fairbanks. The Alyeska Pipeline aka Trans-Alaska Oil Pipeline is an Engineering Marvel as it travels mostly parallel to the James Dalton Highway and is about 800 miles long serving the oil wells near Prudhoe Bay, AK. The visitor center is across from the Yukon River camp embankment where there are some stores as well as RV, Snow vehicle, etc storage. There is a nice restaurant that serves good food and is prepared fresh. Nice clean restrooms and great place to rest before heading to the Arctic circle. We enjoyed the clean air and great hospitality in this town.

It’s a cool thing to see if you’re driving along the highway. But I’m not sure I’d recommend making a special trip just to see it. However, it is pretty impressive that all of the oil runs through it. You don’t really appreciate how big the pipeline is until you see it firsthand.

I love this place because Im an engineer, and I wanted to understand all the complex engineering that was required to put this pipeline through such a rugged environment. Theres not much here, accept a section of the pipeline that you can walk up to and touch. Interpretive signs tell you quite a bit about the construction of the pipeline and the engineering that was involved. Its free, you can stay as long as youd like, and its very interesting. However, if youre not at all interested in engineering Marvels, you might want to avoid this place
