After almost 6 years in Eugene I attended my first OCT play and am sad I didnt get there sooner. Curious Tale of the Dog in the Night was so well done. Minimalist stage that they performed wonders on using people as objects and stacking boxes here and there for different scenes. Theater itself is small and every seat is great. Im short and sat in the first row just in case, but would definitely choose any seat next time as the rows are steep allowing you to see over the person in front of you. Big lobby to wait in before the play starts. Adequate intermission time to use the loo and its not far away. Cant wait for next time.
Roommates was a fun play. I have to say that whoever played the tall roommate nailed her poetry reading moment during the Thursday dress rehearsal. That moment is burned into my brain. She bested Lilly Tomlin and anything one might see on the best Saturday Night Live. It was perfectly silly, magical and very funny.
Disclosure: this is the first theatrical performance I have ever attended as an audience member. Upon arrival, I was greeted with the warm smell of popcorn and butter (and a little brewers yeast). They offer a small selection of alcoholic beverages (one beer, one cider, a red wine, a white wine), sodas, water, and of course, the popcorn. When the doors open, theres a bottle neck of people, and you must nearly walk over the stage to reach your seats. I had hoped for an easy escape, and quickly realized that would be impossible unless I wanted to join the performance. The theater is set up much like a studio theater with the stage on the floor and seating at three sides. The real treat of the experience, though, was the performance itself. I saw The Cake. The only reason I did was because a familiar name would be performing one of the lead roles (1/4 total) and I had to see her work. The show started out slowly, and I was skeptical at first. By about thirty minutes in, tears streaming down my cheeks, my partner turns to commentate and stops short giving me a teasing eye roll while we giggle to ourselves. This theater housed a most wonderful performance and a lovely, emotional evening. I will return.
Great small theatre with minimal staging. Weve been to 3 plays in 2019-20 season, and all have been well acted and engaging. There was an outstanding performance by young lead in Curious case of dog in the night.
This place is cozy and adorable. Fun date night or evening with friends. Community theater done well.
Excellent & imaginative interpretation of the book, Curious Incident... Actors positive & honest portrayal of the gifts & challenges associated with autism appreciated. The lead actor was very convincing.
Wonderful play! Well written, well acted, well choreographed, great direction and staging - all in an intimate and creative setting. Highly recommend!
So pleased with this theater and the talent, variety of plays, quality of the work and wonderful seating space were you can see everything and here all! Parking nearby and refreshments served to purchase such as wine, other drinks, & light treats.
Awesome little theater... every seat is a good one... the performers did a fantastic job
It used to be called Oregon Repertory Theater and I did are there for a Gershwin show when I was in Beauty College it was awesome to be backstage with everyone and Im sure it is the same today even if its under a different name
I like Oregon Contemporary Theater because its size makes it very quaint and made me feel a part of the play.
Quite high quality professional theatre -- a play with impact, well-acted. The lighting and set were right for the play, but a little tedious to look at for 90 minutes. More sound and lighting effects might have helped. Luckily the two main actors were expressive even when not speaking. The play did make us question assumptions as it took its twists and turns. The theatre space is great -- no bad seats and its nice to be allowed to bring drinks and food in. Well be back, even from an hour away.
I absolutely loved every part of the show! From the gorgeous set upon entering the theater, to the costume design, the direction, the lighting, and of course the fantastic acting from each and every cast member! ( not to mention the gorgeous music played by Sabrina gross on piano!) They truly told a beautiful story from all angles and put me, along with everyone who was a part of opening night, into a wonderful place in heart and mind A must see holiday show… You won’t be disappointed unless you miss the show!Thank you to the Oregon contemporary Theatre for bringing the show to life on stageStorm
Just watched Good People at OCT. It was the preview showing, I expected a small crowd, but barely made it in for a single seat before they closed the box office! Sold out on a Thursday, thats a first! I came to see a friend perform, not knowing anything about the story. I was amazed by the outstanding cast, excellent production, and impressed by the play overall. I highly recommend. The themes explored and brought to life resonated with me, being a single mom with a kid who has special needs. Questioning the accepted status quo of hard work=guaranteed outcomes, much like Malcolm Gladwells book Outliers, the play showed us how our readiness to pat ourselves on the back for our successes in life is almost always actually made possible by many players and supporters, by good fortune and privilege, seen and in this case, unseen. No spoilers here, but you should see this play for yourself, the professional cast at OCT does it beautifully. Poignant, painful at times, but also hilarious, this is a powerful reminder of what makes humanity good and not so good, and possibly how we can adjust our thinking to be better.
Every play Ive seen here was entertaining. The theatre is small enough there isnt a bad seat in the house. As the name suggests, a great place to sample modern theatre.
Awesome high quality professional theater!
Great! Ive had some interesting experiences here, but generally enjoyed my time here.
I love this place. I volunteered with clean up. The staff is very nice
Wonderful place. I had my LES meeting there. I love this place. They should advertise it more for meetings
The actors were excellent, the director was excellent, and the sets were excellent. The play itself had won prizes on Broadway, so the entire experience was 100% outstanding.
Best play of the season. The acting was good the script was good everything was great.
Cake: Superb is an understatement.
My husband and I had a great time. We thoroughly enjoyed The 39 Steps and would encourage anyone who enjoys live theater to see this unique and very funny play. The actors were phenomenal and their quick changes were amazing. We have had the pleasure of seeing Tom Wilson in many local productions and he never disappoints. Last night we watched Hitchcocks movie again and were surprised that the play eliminated nothing. Great work!
Opening night of The Cake was fantastic!
I absolutely LOVE OCT! I have had the privilege of seeing many plays there. The venue is small and intimate, the actors are high quality, passionate and often inspiring, and the play choices are very diverse. If I had more than two thumbs I would give them three!!
Went to Oregon Contemporary Theater to see Fun Home. What a wonderful, emotional and touching musical. The actors were wonderful. Very professionally produced and acted.
Was here for a fundraiser... lobby served as reception area with food and beverages - was a bit tight and warm, but well staffed. Theater is an intimate setting, had a contemporary and modern feel to it
Good People! Fantastic play and extraordinary acting.
Though they certainly get more than their share of reviews... what a splendid locale for beautiful/terrific theatre! I love the actors who work hard; the sets are hard to say if theyre more quaint or visionary though easy to say they are indelible!; and the staff are tan (so) courteous that you will feel humbled and bumbled as you stumble.
Several people who recommended Blue Door were right. It is an important theatrical event that delivers a powerful statement about slavery, discrimination, and denial. A poignant search for African-American identity. A very moving experience. An incredibly creative script handled with style and sensitivity by two superb actors.
I loved The Under Study! Thanks again for another great show
Have seen several plays here. Always have had a good experience in this intimate little venue!
OCT continues to provide excellent theatre in a variety of genres. This is a great night out throughout the year and not to be missed when visiting Eugene too! Each season gets better and better--thanks for pushing the envelope and creating thoughtful work.
NW 10: a wonderful selection of plays that were hilarious, thought-provoking and highly entertaining.
We think the theme of the play is interesting, the actors are very good, but the reason for only two stars is the amount of foul language that takes away all the good from it.We believe the English language is reach and beautiful and there is no need to use this kind of language in a public play. I know we live in a society that has no respect and thinks is okay to use this words, but it should not happen in a place of art, entertainment, a respectful place.
I enjoyed the play but i didnt like no intermission and I couldnt get up to go the bathroom.
Cast was wonderful and the play well-written. Thoroughly enjoyed this Austen fan fiction and it made for a delightful evening.
Really liked the Flick at the OCT. The three lead actors are excellent, and fun to watch. At three hours, the play is too long, but worth staying until the end. We loved all the movie references as well.
Venus in Fur was an amazing experience. Kudos to the two actors who brought depth and life to this well-written play. Its a funny, witty commentary on men and women in society and the need for us to remember and give homage to the goddess in all women. I would have gone again but for the fact I attended on the final night!
Our first time to OTC. Absolutely stellar performance of Fun Home. Looking forward to seeing more of the seasons productions!
Quality plays with good local actors.
Beautiful theater. Exciting productions, well chosen and directed. Easy parking.
Good play, excellent acting, nice venue, friendly staff. A great experience.
We so enjoy OCT performances, but to our great surprise we found The Flick to be utterly pointless. We left this overly long play at intermission--a first for us. The acting was, as always, excellent, but we considered the play itself boring and directionless. Whatever message the author was intending to convey got lost on us. So sorry.
Hand to God at OCT was OMG amazing. One more weekend - catch it if you can! Onward
Great play and seat
Great intimate venue!
Great little theater! The people are very friendly, had a fun evening!
Great space. We went to a free staged reading which was the best theater that Ive seen in years!
This is a great little theater. It looks like theyve been fixing it up.
Great shows, well run, highly recommended!
Went there for the Elliot Martinez show. Great people, fun show!
First time there. Very cute place, really nice greeting, play was well acted, the characters were believable. Snacks after.
Excellent professional show, top quality acting, sets, lights, the whole package a joy. Shows always interesting as well
The best local theatre in town.
Great small theater, thoroughly enjoyed the show!
Professional productions of contemporary plays
Very good actors. Sometimes great plays.
A very thought provoking play and a brilliant performance! Kudos to Oregon Contemporary Theater for bringing it to Eugene...
This is great theatre with superb actors and production values. Highly recommend.
Some plays are better than others
Some of the best theatrical productions in town.
Fabulous show. Marvelous cast.
Wonderfully nuanced performances. First-rate!
Great show right now
Like many things in Eugene very accessible in the downtown area. If you like the performing arts this is a good place to get you arts fix.
This play was one of the worst I have ever seen! Very little if any dialog and less acting . At the end of the first half, I had no idea what so ever what the play was about. This is only the second time i have left a play early. I love live theater but this was terrible. I know Dorothy Velasco and figured if she gave it an outstanding review, it must be good. The program indicated the play had won a pulitzer prize in 2004. When I bought tickets, there were very few good seats left and the night I went the show had been extending to one additional performanceI feel I wasted the price of the tickets. You did ask-here it is.
Oregon Contemporary Theater occupies a v ery modern interior with a small and comfortable au ditoriujm. The back row is plenty close enough to the stage. This is the place to go ikn Eugene if you wish to see the latest in professional theater.
We saw the FLICK. Well, we didnt see it. We walked out in the first ten minutes of the three hour play. It was vile, vulgar, and offensive. Someone should have noted it was R rated with highly offensive language and no humor. I took my wife to celebrate our 40th wedding anniversay only to subject ourselves to that garbage. The Reguister Guard should have noted the offensive nature of the language and content when they did their article. Terrible. Dont see it. There must be better plays in this area than that. And I am not a prude by far.
Brilliantly written and scored, exquisitely performed.
Attended Middletown. The acting was good, the venue was intimate and comfortable.
Great place for theater productions small venue excellent seats
If you want to LOL go to OCT for 6 last performances of the fastest farce in the west, the adapted 39 steps with Director Schorr choreographing 4 actors with inspired costumes including a a lady with very hairy legs and a wig-hat. A hundred characters came and went, jostling each other on trains, fleeing the law or - was it all just the nightmare of a middle aged bachelor Brit.
Great show, convenient parking!
Beautiful
Awesome talent!!
Great venue for plays.
Buried Child was such a treat. A lot of laughs and reflection. A must see!
Great shows, the costumes were amazing!
Nice little theater.
Good
Quaint local theatre experience
Loved it!
Great professional theatre!
Excellent productions, great casts.
