Went there for their Spirits in the Castle ghost tour, learned about Death & Mourning during the Victorian Era as well as the history of the Wickwire family...unfortunately no paranormal activity at that time, but overall had a nice time and would recommend it for anyone interested in history and/or Victorian style architecture.

We were driving through town on a mini vacation and just happened to stumble across this beautiful house -The Wickwire house. And what do you know. Its a museum house with guided tour (if you want it) at no additional charge. Admission price was very fair as well. The hostess, a very nice young woman, took us through the entire house room by room and all 4 levels. She was very knowledgeable and courteous. Even the kids enjoyed it. The whole tour takes about an hour or so. I would highly recommend it.

Such a wonderful event for the whole family!! Christmas Wassail, cookies and free to all. You can even go through the home without a tour guide. Just a beautiful home with such history it takes you back in time for just a while. There was live music, it was decorated for Christmas and it was the most enjoyable thing I have done in many years, not to mention always wanting to see the inside since I was a child, at 54 yrs old I finally did!!!

Ive been going to the wassail party here for over 25 years. This year was different. The atmosphere was stuffy and it didnt feel welcoming. I missed seeing the dining room table decorated too. The modern elves on the shelves was odd and not on the time period.

Gorgeous! We attended a Victorian Tea Party at the 1890s House. It was a lovely affair. Tea and cucumber sandwiches followed by a marionette performance. Wonderful time! Highly recommend for children and those interested in dress up and tea parties. On another visit on a random winters day I really took my time exploring all the beautiful details of the old mansion and all the treasures from that era. The descriptions on exhibits throughout the many rooms weave together a story from the past of the 1890s House and its occupants giving a brief glimpse back in time. There is a beautiful, near 360° view from the top of the house. Very limited off street parking. On street parking available. I have only visited on weekends and I do not recall if there is a fee for parking.

While several attempts have been made to re construct what life was like when Wickwires were in residence here..all attempts to guide or correct mistakes have been rebuffed..Prime example...they insist on using the side room as a dining room..It was never used as such. But they think they know how it was .I have also been told many of the original furnishings have been donated back and sit in the storage areas.becauae no one really knows where to put them.Mrs.OConnors bedroom and all the junk placed in it in a feeble attempt to display Victorian ladies life probably has her rolling in her grave..or laughing..She did, after all wear tiaras to her card parties. No one has ever located her book or made copies of it available . No history of the house is complete without reference to Mrs.McNally either.

Although the outside, and sections of the inside, are lovely, there is need for much improvement in other areas. This is probably due to lack of funding (who doesnt lack funds these days?). I was particularly surprised by the potentially dangerous attic area, which was open to the public. There were wide open gaps in the floor, where an inquisitive child (or adult) could easily fall and get hurt. I saw no reason to have this area open for the public to stoop around in.

I agree with the one comment- The price is a little steep for admission, then again Cortland NY is a college town and not exactly filled with tourism so they need to make sure they obtain enough income to maintain the beautiful property. The staff here is very very knowledgeable and love their building. They are working on restoration over time to re establish this once great house. So far so good :) What is really amazing is that the items within the house are true to the period and most were once original to the house. When the house was up for auction after the owner died alot of locals took alot of the items in auction, but when they found the house was to be a museum, many donated them back :) As far as the one comment of the play being hunted/ haunted .... I believe they mentioned there were not obscure deaths or murders in this house so therefore not haunted. Though the basement is creepy lol.
