Situated in a residential area at the base of the Cheyenne Mountains are Starr Kempf Kinetic Sculptures. He started making the windmills in 1977. There is no parking in front but there is a pull off across the street. Also there is a parking lot few feet down the road. As I understand, there were more sculptures but the neighbors didnt like the traffic, so a court order made the family take them down. There are still 5 of them still there. There are a couple in downtown Colorado Springs. I visited on a windy day and it was awesome.
I love this place. Have been coming here since i was a teen, im a grandfather now. Some of the sculptures have been relocated for safety.
A very unique and unexpected artistic hidden gem at the base of Cheyenne Canyon. I would highly recommend taking a tour guide with you to give additional information and background on Starr Kempfs life, and not just his art. Additionally, I would recommend visiting on a windy day to fully see the movent and grandeur of each sculpture he has created. Let us all continue to visit and keep this piece of of Colorado Springs culture alive for generations to come.
Happened to drive past by accident-was mesmerized by the art work. Would love to actually go back & have a tour of the sculptures!
Enjoyed what we could see.
You see huge sculptures erected inside a gated private property and all you could do is wish that you could come nearer and inspect them up close. The Starr Kempf Sculpture Garden is located in Colorado Springs, in a residential area that is quite hard to find without a GPS. With the winding and hilly terrain that lead to the garden, the location is very easy to miss. However, when you find it, you will be in awe of the creator Mr. Kempf, his talent, and his creativity. As I said in the beginning, the only disappointment is that the Sculpture Garden is enclosed in the front yard of a residence and inaccessible to the public. The only way to view the creations is from the road. And if you happen to arrive at a time when other curious onlookers are there, then parking along the narrow road could be an issue. Is Starr Kempf Sculpture Garden worth the drive? If you are heading to the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo or even to the Garden of the Gods, then the garden is worth the stop.
This is a private property, so we didnt get very close of a look. However, the art is displayed for the public to view, and its gorgeous! I hope someday to go and speak to the homeowners - artists - and learn more about the art and its origins. A very neat experience though!
Pretty amazing sculptures to be seen.
Wonderful that they allowed some of these moving sculptures to stay. Neighbors are obnoxious, apparently. There used to be more, and they are fascinating, not just as works of art, but as engineering and science. One mans signature on our Earth. Functional art. Worth the visit, and looking up the history.
If you havent stopped by here, you must do it at least once. One man created these gigantic kinetic sculptures, which can now be seen around town as well. There is a small pull-out across the street for a quick picture stop.
I work around the corner, and its always nice to stop bye and see the sculptures
A drive by place. Statues are inside someones yard. Neat but why is it a destination. Weird experience. But the houses close by are a must see.
Remembering from when i was a kid. Still unique
Service great. Good delicious Beer cold
Badass sculpture
Pretty interesting artwork. Its best to go on a windy day so that you can see the kinetic sculptures moving or else theyll be pretty stationary.
Just happened to see this place on our way to somewhere. Very cool sculptures!

Absolutely beautiful. Should go see if youre in Colorado Springs
Great art and beautiful area
Love that the family shares these beautiful pieces of art with us...the citizens.
Did our recent tennis ball sized hail damage the art? I hope not. I love biking by this special place.
These sculptures are amazing! Well worth the shirt detour, or stopping by UCCS to see a few of them.
Like taking my Great Grandsons up there to see it. They are amazed.
I first saw Mr. Kempfs amazing art work at night with a an autumn breeze blowing. I was completely mesmerized by the size and sheer beauty of his work. It is a sight I will never forget.
A true artist lived there. The actual story is kind of heartbreaking.
Great local sculptures. These giants have been here for generations now. They are a local treasure and secret of Cheyenne Canyon. Located very close to Seven Falls. Please respect the residents when visiting.
These sculptures are in the yard of a resident. They are huge in size and they move with the wind so fluidly. They are mesmerizing to watch.
Beautiful place be careful of ur service
Absolutely beautiful. Stunning art.
The spirit of this place is simply inspiring, RIP shooting star
Such a unique and stunning place! Cool to see but is also a private residence so need to be considerate of that and the neighborhood.
These are a staple of the Broadmoor area. These statues have survived the test of time. Definitely well worth the look if you get the chance.
Just drove by and they was outstanding
You will definitely enjoy it.
Not as good as it used to be.. sculptures are showing signs of rust
One of the hidden beauties in Colorado Springs, most locals do not even know its around. I met the artist when i was a child, he could be found building these artist kinetic sculptures in his garage, happy to shake hands with admirers. Starr served in the United States Air Force during World War II. He married a German immigrant named Hedwig Roelen in 1942, who was a nurse at Glockner Penrose Hospital in Colorado Springs. In 1948, they purchased this property of their future home in Cheyenne Canyon, where Starr designed and built his house and art studio. I remember growing up stopping by every once in a while to see his new creations or how much further he had gotten on a sculpture. They use to have music they moved to. Some taking up to 3 years to build, Pure genius. Unfortunately when he committed suicide, he was working on his peace on earth sculpture but did not finish it. While alive he tried to give his work to the city, they declined and did not want it sadly until after his death. Now a piece is also located in downtown. He remains one of the most amazing architects in the country in my eyes. Fabulous. Visit and donate to help keep this amazing, spectacular spot cared for as it is private property.
Cool to look at but on in private residence so you cant get up close.
Wow, simply wow. Well done Mr. And Mrs. Kempf!
Pretty place, but you can not come in because private place.
Something different that people should definitely check out

Be respectful and considerate but a wonderful stop for a once in a lifetime art experience
No hours posted, and phone number doesnt connect. Good job guys!
I met Mr. Kempf and watched him work on a project. He was a withdrawn man. But I did get the chance to thank him for his art.
